PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • My Life and Stryper Revealed
HONESTLY My life and Stryper revealed. By Michael Sweet Founding member, singer, songwriter, and guitarist of the pioneering Christian rock band Stryper tells his life story…. Honestly. with Dave Rose and Doug Van Pelt © 2014 Big3 Records ONE I drink. Occasionally I smoke. If you ask my wife, my kids, my tech, my agent or my manager they'll all tell you that I curse more than I should. I've fooled around with women on tour buses. I’ve been arrested for indecent exposure. I've been reckless with money to the point of bankruptcy. My favorite bands are The Beatles, Van Halen and Judas Priest. I was pissed at God when my wife died of cancer and I despise religion. I am a Christian. I'm Michael Sweet. I’m a singer, guitarist, songwriter, producer and a founding member of the pioneering Christian rock band Stryper. We've sold almost 10 million records to date and were the first Christian band to air on MTV, and to have four #1 videos. We even had two top-10 videos at the same time, back when MTV actually played music videos. We've played soccer stadiums and biker bars, sometimes in the same week. Despite having done all of that, I'm still often known as the Bible-Tossing- Yellow & Black-Bumble-Bee guy. The Jesus guy. The 80's hair/glam Christian metal guy. An irrelevant joke. Or, even worse-- sometimes I'm not known at all. So who am I? I'm a guy that grew up in Southern California – sort of a surf punk kind of guy who absolutely loved music.

Godsmack – Godsmack IV (2006) Written by bluesever Tuesday, 12 April 2011 19:06 - Last Updated Wednesday, 21 March 2018 22:06 Godsmack – Godsmack IV (2006) 1. Live In Sin 2. Speak 3. The Enemy 4. Safe And Sound Musicians: Sully Erna: lead vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboards, drums, percussion, Tony Rombola: lead guitar, backing vocals Robbie Merrill: bass, Shannon Larkin: drums, percussion Godsmack may never garner the kind of praise that's bestowed upon its obvious influences (Metallica, Alice in Chains, Tool), but the hard-working Boston quartet has managed to stay at the top of the alternative metal heap for nearly eight years. IV, produced by frontman Sully Erna, doesn't stray too far from the formula, relying on big midtempo brooders and heavy, drop-D riffs to work in the usual themes of loneliness, betrayal, and the overuse of the word "bleeding." For the most part it's cliché done well -- the record opens with an audio collage of children saying their prayers before bed -- and the band can turn it up to 11 with the best of them. Stadium-sized cuts like "Speak," "Enemy," and "Temptation" are sure to please the masses -- 1 / 2 Godsmack – Godsmack IV (2006) Written by bluesever Tuesday, 12 April 2011 19:06 - Last Updated Wednesday, 21 March 2018 22:06 they even bring out the vocoder for "No Rest for the Wicked" -- and fans brought into the fold with 2004's acoustic Other Side EP will eat up the pensive, mandolin-led "Hallow," but there's little growth to be found, resulting in a textbook-executed slice of commercial aggression.

  • Christian Rock Eine Betrachtung Unter Kulturästhetischen Und
JOHANN WOLFGANG GOETHE UNIVERSITÄT FRANKFURT AM MAIN Fachbereich Sprach- und Kulturwissenschaften Die Arbeit wird im Rahmen des Studiengangs Musikwissenschaft vorgelegt zur Erlangung des Magister Artium. Christian Rock Eine Betrachtung unter kulturästhetischen und musikalischen Aspekten vorgelegt von: Tobias Rux aus: Zwickau (Geburtsort) 1. Gutachter/in: Prof. Dr. Linda Maria Koldau 2.

  • FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Whitaker Center Welcomes Sully Erna This
Media Contact: Ashlee Hurley Director of Marketing and Sales 717-724-3879 [email protected] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Whitaker Center Welcomes Sully Erna This Fall Singer, Songwriter, and Multi-Instrumentalist Plays Intimate Acoustic Performance Harrisburg, PA- Whitaker Center, in association with SLP Concerts, announces musician Sully Erna at Sunoco Performance Theater on Tuesday, November 15 at 8:00 pm. The singer, songwriter and multi- instrumentalist is launching his ‘Hometown Tour’ in celebration of the release of his new solo album Hometown Life, due out Friday, September 30 via BMG. Only this time, Erna plans on stripping it down for an intimate acoustic evening with guitar-player and band member Tim Theriault. Composed by Erna on piano and acoustic guitar and produced in his New England-based studio, the 10 songs on Hometown Life are a powerful mix of blues, country and adult contemporary, all layered with orchestral overtones offering another stylistic left-hand turn from his first solo album Avalon as well as the music he creates as front man for the multi-platinum rock band Godsmack. Case in point, the powerful and emotional first single "Different Kind Of Tears" written with songwriter/producer Zac Maloy (Tim McGraw, Carrie Underwood). A personal, confessional, raw work, Hometown Life offers a wide-ranging glimpse of Erna’s eclectic musical tastes--from singer-songwriter Billy Joel/Bruce Springsteen, to the bossa nova touch of “Take All of Me,” to the breezy island feel of “Your Own Drum,” the finger-snapping Motown bass lines of the bluesy “Turn It Up,” the country flavors of “Different Kind of Tears” and the wide-screen canvas of mini- symphonies such as “Blue Skies” and “Forever My Infinity.” All of them are tied together with Erna’s unflinching view of the emotional roller-coaster of his life, drawing us into a very intimate space.

  • Gaining and Maintaining Brand Loyalty Through the Lens of K-Pop
Just Right: Gaining and Maintaining Brand Loyalty Through the Lens of K-Pop by Panisa Sermchaiwong Thesis Advisor: Anocha Aribarg A senior thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirements of the Michigan Ross Senior Thesis Seminar (BA 480), (4/22/2021). Abstract Understanding how to build, maintain, and utilize brand loyalty is essential in today’s business world. Given increasing competition for a customer’s limited attention span, learning how to foster brand loyalty among customers gives a business considerable competitive advantage. This research will examine the impact of firm-level marketing techniques employed by the Korean music industry on consumer brand loyalty. In-depth interviews of K-Pop consumers were conducted in tandem with an online survey amongst a pool of randomly selected, consistent K-Pop consumers to gauge the effects of 1) gamification marketing techniques and 2) exclusive ecosystem marketing techniques on building consumer brand loyalty. The effects will be analyzed using: 1) a thematic analysis of the interview transcripts, and 2) a mediated correlational analysis with firm-level tactics of gamification and exclusive ecosystem as the independent variables, brand loyalty as the dependent variable, and brand community as the mediator variable. Findings from this research will determine whether marketing tactics employed by players in the Korean music industry are effective on customers, and if so, provide incentive for other businesses to pursue similar tactics to build loyalty for their own brands.
