Early on in this raucously time- hopping collection of anecdotes loosely arranged as a story told by a master storyteller, Blessed makes an odd and entirely pointless request when asking the reader to imagine the story as told in Blessed's own, booming voice. If you're looking for a hilarious memoir, this is the one for you. As with many biographies, I was especially enthralled by his childhood memories during WW2. His childhood, career, second wife and the making of Flash Gordon is entertaining and funny. What a man, what a life, what a fabulous audiobook. Considering all the people he's worked with and all the things he's done, even now he comes across as utterly eccentric and mad in a good way but also down to earth. I've been crying laughing to work and back the last couple of weeks. How true any of it is, is irrelevant, really. Truly an eccentric who is happy to write it all down. I know that this book has drawn its critics due to the total exclusion of even a mention of his first wife and the daughter he had with her, but I don't know the back story so won't dwell on it. He was born in the s in a South Yorkshire mining village quite close to Doncaster. Then open A bsolute Pandemonium and you'll be taken on a riotous journey from his childhood, growing up the son of a miner in Goldthorpe, to finding fame in Z-Cars. Made three attempts to climb Everest but made it to the summits of Acancagua and Kilimanjaro, and the oldest to get to the magnetic north pole on foot Slapped around a drunk and arrogant Peter O'Toole. A lot of these big names seem to get so full up of their own hype that they live in a nonsense superficial world of spending way too much money and thinking they're better than the rest of the human race. I will be forever ruined for them, having now experienced the full Brian Blessed. It took some getting used to listening to his powerful voice tell the story but a few 'pages' in and it felt comfortable; like a larger than life friend keeping me company on the drive too and from work. He was a modest, understated hero. Brian lives to persue his dreams, and has had enormous enjoyment in the process. He practises transcendental meditation and is super into rescuing abused animals. This is his sixth book. He sings, he does the voices, he swears, he tells jokes, he does it all. As an introduction to his life, it seems to cover the main bits - his poor-but-decent upbringing, his struggle to care about school until encountering inspiring teaching, his training as an undertaker's apprentice, his early acting experiences, becoming a national celebrity in 'Z Cars', his courtship and marriage, his close friendship with Katherine Hepburn, starring in 'Flash Gordon' which included a lot of kicking dwarfs up the arse, apparently and, ever since, yelling 'GORDON'S ALIVE! Of course, this was my own particular choice and therefore very subjective. What’s one man’s junk etc. Unsurprisingly, Doctor Who was one of those shows, even though at that time it was taking a rather longer than expected sabbatical. Over the last twenty years there’s been no shortage of writers wanting to share their love of the world’s longest running science fiction series and on the following pages are a selection of some of them. It’s amazing to think that nearly sixty years has passed since we first entered that police box in a junk yard in Totters Lane and were whisked away on one of television’s greatest adventures. Adventures that are still unfolding today.
