The Forty Plus Cycling Club

Year 1981 4^ OTHER M-EMBERS FOR Mr.Einnimore. Prop. I«Ir.Pemberton. 2nd. Mrs.Rumball. THE COMTTEE. Mr.Germain. " Mr.Sooder. " MrS.Gardner. Mr.Wyatt. If Mrs.R-umtall. " Mr.Wooder. Mr.Bellchamber. 'ZMr.Drewett. " Mr.Stev/art. Luton & Western. I^.Jefford being unable to get the section going during 1980 asked if there was any member* who would be willing to try it out and Mr. Ron Drew from Luton offered. He said that he could try and get a run each Friday from 3rd April and this offer v/as gladly accepted. ANY OTPIER BUSINESS I^Ir. Collins thanked the meeting for the sujpport they had given him in the formation of the new Stevenage & N.Herts Section. I^lriiWaxwell said that he thought that the giving of a Tankard to members when they reacted the age of SO years should be done by the club and with club funds. Many members spoke against this. It had all been spokeb about before and it was after all just a gift from a fev/ friends to a member^ Mr.Pemberton said that we do not •always find out whflvunembers attained that ^k.ge, and if the club was to do this presentation it would mean that we ^ad to know everyone's birthday. Folk who did not reveal this date might feel out of it, others did not want it. It had only started as a spontainious gesture by lyirs.Bngel.-.and actually only about four members had received a tankard. It was agreed to leave it like it was. Mr.Turner(Borfield St) spoke about the "Brighton Run" and suggested that members of the club should support the run. It was generally agreed that if members wished to do this then it was up to them, but the club could not support it as a body. Mr,Turner then agreed to find out v;hen the run would take place and put the date in Signpost for anypne who wished to go. lyir.Engel then mentioned the work that v;ent on behind the doors of P-Ir. Newmans home on.-the duplicating-.of the Magazine and-runs lists. Mr.Newman said that he quite enjoyed doing it and that he had enlisted the support ^f his family as well. ^kt, Stan Johnson offered help to Mr.Newman if he needed it at any time. Mr.Pemberton then said how Mr.Newman had collected from Mrs.Wilcox and delivered to Mrs.Gardner and Mrs,Ford all the items necessary for the ^preparation of the Magazines and rekoned that Bill did a good job. It took time and cost of petrol but f'lr^.Nev/man didn't mind that. There' being no other business -the meeting closed at 2.10pm.

r : '_JIi"lL'-bdon, iSa HItjh Sireet. , Essex CMS 9DS. "Minutes of Committee Meeting held on Saturday 31st January 1981, ^ the Castle, Public House, Cowcross St,E.C.I. The meeting commenced at 12 noon and twelve members were present, l^Ir. Jefford and Mr,Rolfe (who had by then resigned) being absent. The Minutes of the previous meeting were read and accepted, Prop, by Mr,Germain and Sec, by Mr,Pin4imore. The short minutes of the Special Committee Meeting held on Sunday 23rd November at, 7 Perlieu Way, were also read and accepted, Prop, by Mr.Wooder and Sec, by Mr,Germain. mTERS ARISING. rs,Gardner read the letter received from the C.T.C. regarding someone from the Headquarters Staff to attend the 30 Year Celebration Dinner and propose the toast of "The Club" Mr.Pinnimore said that Easter Bookings at Duntisbourne Abbots Youth Hostel ended with 7 members to attend, this was considered very low. The Secretary then read the letter she had from the C.T.C. Regarding Bad Road Surfaces, The letter from the Victory Services Club regarding the cancellation of the dinner that we had hoped to have there, this now being arranged at the special committee meeting on 23rd November to be held at Tree Tops Hotel in Epping, Mr,Wooder said that he already had the printed Tickets for the Dinner they were prepared by Mr,Kilby, who having already prepared some for the Victory Services Club that could not now be used had refused any ayment for them, ,Wooder suggested that we hired a Microphone for the Dinner and this was agreed to, after being seconded by Mrs,Ford, The question of Toasts at the Dinner was next discussed, it was agreed that as-the function was not for a very large assembly there v/ould be no need for a "Toast Master", Mr,Wooder would call the Loyal Toast, a Representative from the C.T.C. would propose "The Club" and a response to- this -was to come from-the Chairman, Mr.Trueman,' Mr,Emburey would Propose "The Guests", there being no need for a reply to that toast. •The Toast of "The President" will be by Mr,Groom, our oldest Pounder ember attending the Dinner. . A. History of the club had been prepared by Mr,Wooder and as it was rather a lot to go on the back of the Menu as had at first seemed possible it was agreed that Mrs.Pord would type a Stencil and Mr,Newman would print it, it would then be possible to insert one into ea-ch Menu for the table, Mr,V/ooder agreed to contact Mr,Kilby to see if the Menu could be printed by him, if he v/as unable then he would contact someone else. Mrs,Gardner promised to buy the Table Lamp that was to be presented to rs,Wilcox as a token of appreciation for the 20 years of work she had accomplished for the magazine, Mr,Pinnimore suggested that a History of the club, as being prepared for the Dinner should be sent to all members with the next edition of the magazine and this was agreed to by all, Mrs,Gardner read the letter she had received from our member ]\lrs,Bruton acknowledging the Donation of £10 which the club had sent towards the Fund for a Cycle ihelter in memory of her Daughter Joanna, and also suggesting that we hold the Re-Union on a Saturday this year. And at the Methodist Church Hall in Hertford, The matter was discussed at length and it was decided to refer this to theA.G.M. on 7th February to get some, indication as to the feelings of members prepared to attend, Mrs,Ford had earlier asked that members bring to the Dinner any old photos that related to club activities and she repeated this request,Mrs.Gardner said that she would bring up all the photos that she now had in her possession, they were formerly owned by our Late President Mrs,Mae Lang. Dear Sir

TRAFFIC SIGNS REGULATIONS REVISION

1. Thank you for yovtr letter dated\ 1 8 February 1974.

2. I can confirm it is the intention to phase out the use of metal studa to mark parking places. Their use for this purpose is increasingly rare now. Most other uses of studs require them to be fitted with reflectors to illuminate the associated road markings, and usually these are of the well known depressible types. However the occasional use of these studs to mark advisory pedestrian crossing places or those controlled for limited time periods by policemen is retained, although it is envisaged that in practice local authorities will increasingly make use of the alternative possibility of flat plastic white squares fitted to the carriageway.

3. The use of traffic cones as a device to delineate road works is now fairly well proven. It is often very necessary to provide for coning off considerable areas of road on the approach to road works to sensibly and safely channel traffic. The introduction of the 'cylinder' version does not extend the use of the device but provides an alternative shape which can make use of the socket fitting of 'catseye' road studs in certain very limited cases. Since these will only be used to close off gaps in central reservations of dxial carriageways or to divide opposing flows of traffic on the same carriageway I would doubt that they would give rise to any difficulty to cyclists.

4. I can confirm that there are no proposals to increase\ th e size of traffic signs. In fact the final drawings for the Regulations will in some cases indicate a new size as the smallest alternative for use on very narrow or little used roads.

Yours faithfully

D E BRIDGE RSTL1 The Letter of resignation from R.Rolfe was read by the Secretary, all memlDers were sorry to hear that he resigned and Mi's,G-ardner was asked to write in acknowledgement and thank him for his services, and also to say the we did accept his resignation with regret. This was Prop, by Mr, Newman and Sec: by Mr, Moore, The Secretary then read the letter she had received from Mr, Jefford about the Luton Section which had not got going at all during 1981 for many and various "S2?easons but at Mr,Jeffords request she would bring the matter up at the AGM to see if anyone was willing to have a go at getting the section started. As the Stencil for the AGM Agenda was already typed she "said that she would bring this up in ANY OTHER BUSINESS. u.e,

Wi'tn Mr. Stewart saying that he #ould definately be dropping from the leadership of the Eastern Thursday runs when the current r^ins list runs out, Mr. Wooder also not seeking re-appointment, and Mr. Good unable to carry on, Mr." Moore said that he had wished to relinquish the leadership .of the St.Albans Section last year but was. more or less pushed into it again- but he felt that yo-unge.r members should now come along and take a turn at these jobs. It seemed|that we shall be needing some completely new leaders and it was suggested ^fchat if new leaders were not forthcoming we must have some "Programme Organisers", someone willing to work out a list of runs and meeting places, so that at least members could ride out and meet each other. The difficulty of finding suitable Cafe's as meeting places was discussed, and some closures were reported, and it was generally, agreed that the pattern of Club Runs as we used td know it was fast changing these days. Members were no longer interest*^n meeting "At a streel Corner" as was the cus'tom in the past, but with the cafe's closing, iTii"iiiTi7~i especially on Sundays things would get even more difficult and some remedy would have to be found.

• Mr. Finnimore asked that the St.Albans Sub Section and the Southend Section be regularised at .the AGM, Mrs. Gardner said that she had on the Agenda a note asking for the election of leaders for these two groups. Mrs.Ford mentioned the Tuesday Pasl£)W Common Ride which seemed not to be on the runs lists and it was agreed that this was just an informal run^ for members who wished to go and Mr. Stewart said that he had hoped to keep it UN-Official, just a meeting of friends but later said that anyone would be welcome to join up with them.

Mrs.Gardner spoke about the C.T.C.Les Warner presentation and suggested , > that the Club send a donation to this fund. Mr. Wooder -^rop: amd l^irjf. » V Germain Seconded that^aHxa3a!aiiui±xK[£x&2Sx be sent and all agreed whole- ^ heartidly, It was then Prop, by Mrp^. Wooder and Sec. by Mrs.Gardner that ^ £25. be sent^all agreed to this.

Mrs. Gardner kaS then said that Mr.Pinnimore would not be seeking re• election as Auditor because he felt that now he lived so far av/ay from the Treasurer it would be easier if someone nearer to Bexleyheath could do the job, Mrs,Gardner said that she had been in touch with our former treasurer Mr,Thorn at Lartford who was willing to take the job on if he was elected, I'lrs,Gardner then said that if f/[r,Thorn was elecet§d would it be in order for him to be one of the signataries for withdrawal from club funds. Mr.Wooder prop: and Mrs,Gardner Sec, that Mrs, Ford do this to all new entries. Mrs,Ford said that she had noticed that the magazine did not now have a hack cover and thought it would make a better appearance to the magazine if v/e had one. It could be printed on the inside. Letter of apology was received from Mr, ¥,Collins, The minutes of the previous meeting, held on 31st January were read and accepted as a true record. Prop, Mr,Moore and 2nd, Mr.Wooder, Matters Arising, Mrs, Gardner said that she had a letter from The Brutons thanking the club for their donation to the Fund for their Late Daughter Joanna, and said that by telephone Geoff,^Had told here that it then Stood at £1500, Everyone' thought that this was a spiended effort, Geoff, said that the original idea was to build a Cjicle Shelter, this had been done and that the committee of the We|.wyn Track were now to decide what else they could provide with the balance. The June Re-Union neEt came up for discussion and Mrs, Gardner said that at the Dinner she had asked for a show of hands from those, likely to support this and only ten members had responded, she thought that this was a poor effort. She suggested that as The Brutons were so keen to arrange the day for us we should make an effort to pus^j the idea and get all the support we could. Mr, Moore suggested that when IA^O _leaders took bookings for the Re-union it would be a good idea to take ^' ' the cost"! at the same time as he thought that this would encourage * those booked to come along and all agreed, Mr, Wooder said that he would lead a ride from the Cafe at for all who wished to start from there, Mrs, Gardner then brought up the renewal of the Advert in CycleTouring, saying that she still received many qmeries about the club and th^ey mentioned our Ad, in the CTC Magazine, She suggested a slight alteration in the wording,^o include the new sections and drop the runs in Northern Ireland -ao^ we now had only one. member over there, Mr. Cylril Henry and that runs had ceased to be carried out. A:^ter some discussion it was agreed to amend the wording to our advert, .a§ follows- ARE YOU OVER 40 YEARS 0? AGE OR RETIRED.? If so THE FORTY PL¥S CYCLING CLUB OFFERS YOU COMPANIONSHIP. Open*i to both sexes. 300 Moderately paced tuns programmed per year around London, Home COunties, Kent & Sussex, Runs on Tuesdays & Thursdays in Herts: & Essexi, Wednesdays in N.W.Kent, Tuesdays, Fridays & Sundays in Sussex, Fridays in Luton Area and Sundays in N.W.Kent & Essex, Current runs list free from MRS.G.D.GARDNER. 16 Red House Lane, Bexleyheat]3L,Kent, DA6 8JD. and Mrs,Gardner said that she would get in touch with the CTC now as the next Advert* would be for the June I..ssue when we were due to pay, Mr,Moore then asked lyir, Finnimore about the refusal he had received at the Green Man at Sandridge to allow some members to eat' their sandwiches while consuming a drink purchased at the Pub. a shprt discussion ensued with Mrs, Gardner ending with her idea that she puts into practice in Kent, she said that if they had a refusal she pointed out to the bar attendant that as they were Pensionl^ers they could not always buy pub food if they bought beer and that likewise if they bought beer they could not afford food, she had sometimes then obtained permission for her section to stay, Coit?espondence, The Secretary said that she still received letters mention^ our advert, but not much other correspondence was receiced since the last meeting, but she had 9 new members and these were dult( elected. Prop, Mr, Germain and 2nd, Mr, Moore, Financial Report, The Treasurer's report had been circulated among the members and all seemed satisfied with it. She said that she had not yet made a final account for the cost of the 30 year Dinner as she had only just received the bill, but she had received all monies for tickets sold, there being PORTY-PLUS CYCLING CLUB. The Financial report was accepted. Prop. Mr, Wooder. 2nd. Mr. Nevraian. The Secretary then re;gd out the Minutes of the AGM, held on 7th Feb. this being the first committee meeting since then. Mr.Germain prop, and Mr. Finnimore seconded that we accept them as a true record, and all agreed. Any Other Business. Mr-i-Moore spoke about the rather crowded conditions at the AGM, and wondered whether it would be possible to have a larger hall or room for the purpose in future, saying that he thought that we would get a larger response if members were not so crowded ^aawfi some had to sit on the floor. Some members wondered if it would be possible to change the venue each year so as to give each area a 'Nearer to home' venue, but it was suggested that this would cause other problems, I^Ir,Wooder said that he thought it was better to have a central place so that all who wished could travel to the venmB9 at least it had to be somewhere where all members, particularly those retired from work could reach easily and fairly cheaply. Mr.Bellchamber suggested a place KkESE near enough to the area where most members now lived, and mentioned the Treetops Hotel as a possible place as it had been so popular for the recent 30 Year Dinner and as he was connected with the Hotel said that he was sure around January and February would be most suitable when things were quieter at the Hotel. Other members thought that it may be possuble to combine the AGM with an annual Dinner, the AGM for instance being scheduled for about 11 am and Dinner around 12.to 1 pm. This idea was-welcomed by all and Mr.Fihnimore suggested that.Mr. Bellchamber be asked to make enquiries at the Hotel to see just what would be possible for next near, and saying that a Sunday would quite definately be the besit day. It seemed that Saturdays were not popular with members for these occasions, and that Saturdays were aiv/ays the busiest at the Hotel, Mr, Bellchamber said that he would m^,ke some enquiries and report back at the next committee meeting; ' Mrs,Gardner.then mentioned the Signaturies for withdrawal o^ amounts from the Building Society. Mr, Thome one of them had nov; been appointed Auditor and had said that he would not now be available as a.signatary. She said that we had at present, Mr, Pemberton and herself, and she felt that another member from the Committee would be most useful. After some discussion it was agreed to have four in future, amdlVIr.Wyatt was Prop. byMr, Wooder and 2nd. by Mr. Good, and Mr. Wooder was proposed by My.'. Finn^'more amd 2nd. by Mr. Germain. Both of these members agreed to stand and g,ll present agreed to this idea. Mr.Germain then mentioned the annual slide show which we Bield at the Victoria Club Hut at Ugley saying that it ought to be arranged nov/ so as to be included in the June issue of Signpost. Mr. Good said that he would contact Mr. Clisby, to see if we could have either 26/7 Sept. or 3/4 Oct. Neither of these dates would clash with the Cambridge Week-end which some members attended a^id he would let Mrs Ford know which date was agreed sothat she could make an announcement in the June Signpost, Mrs.Gardner said that she had only recently heard that we used to send a copy of Signpost to the Editor of Cycle-Touring and that she was not instructed to send a copy when she took over the Secretary's job, did the committe want this done in fu±ti±e. After some discussion it was agreed that she write to ask if we could be igicluded in the "List of useful names and addresses" that is inserted i:^ the CTC Diary each year. Mr.Newman asked the committee's permission to purchase BWJW* paper for the production of Runs Lists nd Magazine, this was readily given. He then mentioned that the postage on each copy was now 15-|p. that meant 62p of each £1. subs being used on postage, then if we add the.cp§t of Paper in Ink, it was approaching the time v/hen v;e should be thinking FORTY-PLUS CYCLING CLUB. 'Th'e meeting commenced at 12,05 there being eleven members present, appoibogies for absence were received from Mr,Pinnimore, Mr,Newman, Mr, Drew and Mrs. V/alker. The Minutes qf the previous meeting v/ere read and accepted as a true record, proposed by I^r. Wooder and Seconded by M±.Germain. Mattere Arising, Mrs. Gardner brought up the matter of the advert we have in the CTC Magazine Cycle Touring, saying that it had in^zrreased in price by about one third since last year and read out an improvement that she thought might be accepted by the committee, giving all the details necessary, but at the same time costing roughly about the same as our advert before this recent price increase, after making a small amendment to it, it was proposed by Mr, Wooder 8,nd Seconded by Mr,Bellchamber that for the next advert we have the new v/ording, and this was agreed to by all present, Mrs. Gardner said that she would bring this up again in the new year just prior to the time of re-advertising to see if any further alteration was forthcoming.

Mr. Bellchamber then mentioned the mppting hw b^d vr;i fh thp ^ropriia^^Tfe-.' f tho Troo Topo Hotol at Epping that there was that afternoon a KwO Bruton Memorial Meet at the Harlov; Track and this was evidently being well supported, everyong seemed pleased to hear this. A short discussion on Bad Road Surfaces took place. I^s.Gardner said that she now ha.d a small supply of the cards for reporting these, those issued by the Cycling Council of Great Britain. Mr. Collin^s said that he always took his reports in by hand and received quite a favourable reply from his local council, he felt because he sometimes re-v/orded the card.

The Slide Show at the Vicijoria Hut was configrmed as for Saturday 19th September, staying overnight until the Sunday morning, Mr, Wyatt asked what the sample of Ink was like that Mr.Nicholson)from Swanley had sent to Mr. Newman for printing our magazine. Mrs.Gardner said that Mr.Newman had tried it and found it much too dry, Mr.Wyatt said that Mr,Nicholson could in all probability get another kind so Mrs. Gardner promised to see Mr, Newman and then Mr.Nicholson to see what could be arranged. This supply would be free and therefore save us some money. Secretary's Report and Correspondence. Mrs.Gardner said that she still received many enquiries, many of them mentioning our advert in Cycle Touring and it was felt that this was therefore worth keeping up. She had no other important items to report, everything seemed to be going along quite well. 23 new members were elected. Prop, by Mr, Wyatt and 2nd by Mr,Moore, Financial Report. The Chairman then read out the report provided and said that we were certainly keeping up a goodbalance in the Building Society. Everyone accepted the report it being proposed .by Fir.Germain and 2nd. by Mr.Wooder Mrs.Gariiiier mentioned the delivery of the magazine and everyone said how much the hand deliveries were appreciated. Mr.Moore asked w^jat, if any, difference^the re-allocation of .the magazines had made, but Mrs. Gardner pointed out that this v/as done just after the June issue was sent out and any difference would be more apparent with the September issue. Any Other Business. The question of support for the Bank Holiday Tours \^as mentioned by Mrs. Gardner, who said that sui)port was very poor and that she only had one person for the August Tour, Everyone joined in the disuussion that

A . i (2) followed. It being generally agreed that some Hostels were good and «some poor, som.e times the food was inadequate and of poor standard, ••••some hostels were however noted for their good food and Mr.Wooder said he, thought that it v/as a question as to who was the Warden and his. attitude to the job. Mr.Moore, said that after the Easter we spent at Stratford-on-Avon Hostel, he had noh supported the YHA at all and suggested that we try gaping either the week-end before or- after a Bank Holiday when the Hostels were not so Crowded^ Or.even thiat v/e try a B & B Place for a change * It v/as generally agreed that in many cases the School Parties filled up the hostel so that the few others who tried to attend were' somev/hat squee^sed out, another membere mentioned that the Wardens these days relied rather a lot on the School Parties to keep their Bed Nighi^up-and therefore preveitjt the Hostel closing down. Mr. Wooder suggested that v/e .could try a Hostel and also a nearby B 8z B, Mr. Trueman suggested Totland Bay on the Isle of Wight. . Someone else suggested Alfris.ton Hostel with a' B ^ B. In the Village. It was then that Mr. • Be 11 chamber carpe. up with the suggestion that we try a small Hotel that he had already visited a± Eastbourne, it was^he thought, very comfortable and accomodating. The meeting generally agreed to this and Mrs,, Gardner said that she would put 'this item, in the September Signpost .to see what response she got, and l^Ir, Bellchamber suggested that she also -write to the Hotel to find put. what they could do for us for' next Easter, the Hotel was the Gleneagles Hotel, 42 Royal Parade, Eastbourne, the Proprietors were I-Ir. "& Mrs. Pwen and that we could mention his name, ^4rs, Gardner agreed to do this THE A.G.M..POR 1982. & S.UGGESTED ANNUAL DINNER. Mr. Bellchamber said' that as requested at the previous cdpimittee meeting he had made a visit to' the Treetops Hotel at .Epping to see if. they could provide a room for this and whether we could have a small snack bar as v/ell, the result was that the sback bai was not possible but • that a room for the meeting v/ould be OK, with a lunch to follow. . "— Mr. Germain then proposed and Mr.Wpoder seconded that we hold the AGM at the Treetops Hotel at about 11 am and that this would be followed by a lunch or dinner at.about 1.30 pm. After a vote this v/as carriedy only one member against the idesL.yr^^aM^tiyL^A_,cu^^ ^ /O/'zM'^'''^t. The date was to be Sunday 7th February 1982. Mrs. Ford then asked if the .Application Form.for membership for the club, could have the Secretary's name and address on and this Mrs. Gardner agreed to do. • ' - Mrs.Ford then mentioned the A & B Thursday Runs saying that she thought that the B Rides ahould be slov/er but it v/as pointed ou^t that this v/as not exactly so, they should be a bit shorter and that"if they were not then it was because we could not satisfy all of the members all of the time. The meeting clo-^ed at 1.45, with a. vote of thanks to the Chairman, The next meeting to be on Saturday 17th October.1981.

A Minutes of Committee Meeting held on Saturday 17th October 1981 at the Castle Public House Gowcross St.EC3. < . The meeting commenced at 12.15 there being eleven members present, appologies were received from Mrs.Ford, Mr.Wooder and I>tc»Gollins, The minutes of the meeting held on 18th July 1981 were read and after a small addition regarding the re-union on Saturday 27th June last they were accepted as a true record. Prop, Mr, Germain , and seconded by "Mr.Good, Mg-tters Arising Mr. Finnimore mentioned that there was now a new Warden at Cambridge Hostel with a great improvement there, especially in the food served at meals. The recent slide show at the Victoria Hut was reported by Mr, Finnimore who said that about 10 people attended, six staying the night, and other members spoke of the help given toy Mr.Fielden in bringing along his projector and other equipment, Mr, Newman spoke about a sample of Ink given to us by a member at Swanley, he was sorry to say that it did dry out too quickly for our purposes, we do need a Non-drying type, he asked for Mr. Nicholson's address (the member* supplying the ink) and said that he would like to write to him about this in the hope that he (Mr. Nicholson) could supply something else, Mrs,ffardner agreed to let •Mr.Newman have the address, Mrs,Gardner asked Mr,Newman if the re-arrangement of the delivery groups of the magazine had made any difference to the cost of posting and Mr,Newman was able to say that it had and that only about 100 to 115 were eventually posted. A short discussion regarding the delivery of the magazine then ensued, Mr,Drew pointing out that the correct address was very necessary, there were of course more than one place with the same namejl and this made things a bit confusing sometimes, he also said that this was the reason 'that he gave Grid References on his runs lists. The question of the proposed visit to Eastbourne for nejift Easter was raised and ]>Ir,Be 11 chamber said that he felt rather guilty when he realised his other club had booked the place full for the same dates, after he had recommended it, but Mrs,Gardner said that she had only one member* who wrote to book and she would now have to return that booking ,to him. The A.G.M.' and Dinner at Treetops Hotel next came up, some members mentioning the difficulty of reaching the venue at the time needed for the A.G.M. which would be at 11 am. The Secretary said that she had received a letter from Mr.Jefford complaining about this, and after some discussion it was decided that we could not now alter the time or datesas this had been booked with the Hotel. Firs.Gardner was asked to send a deposit of £50 and ask for menues and prices, and as the time was now getting a bit close, it was agreed to hold a special committee meeting to settle these items. Mrs.Gardner, would contact all members as soon as she had the necessary information and try to arrange the meeting at Mr.Jennings home at Theydon Bois. As to the difficulty of transport from Luton and other outlying places a short discussion was held, Mr.Drew suggesting that mem.bers try to see if the Green Line ran any cross country services or perhaps even London Country Buses, he felt it might be possible to combine these routes to meet up with some railway station and it would then not be too difficult, if services were available. Mr. Finnimore said that there were two Youth Hostels nearby so that some eould perhaps use these the night before, Mr,Trueman then suggested that it would be a nice idea if we invited the Brut.on Family as guests to the Dinner, the suggestion was then proposed by Mr,Finnimore and seconded byMr,Moore, Mrs,Gardner agreed to write the Brutons regarding thms invitation. The Financial. Repor\ was read by the Chairman and accepted by all, It being agreed that v/e were still in a good financial position. ii III i.rXi"4;ra* iptrr] all',-i.t 1jc,ln^" proposed by Mr.Trueman dnd seconded by Mr.Newman. After this Mr.Bellchamber suggested that it might be a good idea at some later time, if funds were good to invest some of it in the Post Office Investment Account as the rate of interest was so much better, Mr, Finnimore said that he thought that we should wait until the balance was more substantial, say about £1000 and then put half of this away. Mr.Trueman suggested that this should come up at the A.GScM. Any Other Business, Mrs,Gardner then read a letter she had received from Mr,Collins the leader of the. Stevenage and Herts: Section in which he said that the section had not come up to his expectations and he was thinking of closing it at the next A.G.M. but that he would honour the'runs list that was now ih use, but would not be submitting one for February, March and April unless attendances improved, Mr.Moore suggested that Mr Drew might plan his future runs to try and include the distrint that Mr.Collins had been covering and Mrs,Gardner agreed tb this. The question of the closing of the section would come up at the A.G.M, Mrs.Gardner then read out a paragraph from a letter she had from Mr.Aldis, one of the Sussex members who was meeting other cyclists around the Singleton, Layant & Rowlands Castle Area eachjtwo weeks, Mbe-said that she would have this information put in the next issue of signpost so that any members around that area could perhaps join up with them as the Sussex Group did not normally go that far west. The Secretary thenread out a letter she had from Mr.Ron Gunn who complained that at the Dinner although Mr,Rex Coley was there, he was not at the top table.'After.a short discussion Mrs,Gardner agreed to write to IVIr.Gunn to explain how this occured. 13 New members were elected, prop, by Mr.Finnimore and seconded by Mr,Germain, Mr,Drew suggested that it might be a good idea to have the runs lists set out more to "Regional" areas, but it was pointed out that this would not ssMe work, stencils or paper, Mr.Newman and Mrs Gardner both saying this, l^Irs,Gardner said that there were members who doali' ride both north and south of the Thames and this would mean extra work to let them have seperate lists. It was agreed to let the lists stay as they were. It was agreed to have the Re-Union on the last Saturday in June for 1982, that would be on the 26th an§ Mrs,Gardner would let the Brutons know this. The Bank Holiday ^I'ours then were discussed. It was eventually agreed to have a Youth Hostel Tour for Easter at Cranbprne Hostel, and Mr,Finnimore said he v/ould organise that. The poor support over the last two or three years was sfoken about and it was agreed to bring the whole question of Bank Holiday Tours up at the A.G.M, The next Committee meeting was arranged for Saturday 9th January 1982 and the meeting closed at 2,15 pm. 8th April 1981.

Hon. Secretary

MRS.G.D.GARDNER. 16 Red House Lane, Bexleyheath. Kent. President; DA6 8JD

m, TOM, ..WOODER., 9th February 1981, Dear Mr.Scrutton,

Thank you for your letter asking for details of the 40+ CC. I am sending herewith the current runs list and hope that you will be able to join up with us on some of the runs. The general rule is that we meet at the elevenses venues, then ride together to lunch, usually taken at a pub where we can get a drink to have with our sandwiches. Then together again or in twos and threes, each rider dropping off as the most useful turning for home comes along. Those who live at an awkward distance from the elevenses places ride out and meet the others at lunch. The membership fee is £1. each-per year. £1.25 for Husband & Wife. After one year full membership one can commute for 5 years for £4. Husband & Wife for £5. Anyone joining after 30th June in-any year just pays half the fee for that year,• An application for membership form is enclosed, but do not commit yourself yet, come along and have a ride or two, see how you get,-on and whether you like us first. Just tvocn up at the meeting place and make yourself known to the leader, I am sure you will be made welcome. We produce our own magazine "Signpost", which goes out free to all fflemt)ers each-qiaarte-ri ^Pt ds^r s-aiar&^-Titp-^f^-iteias from ^Members, ther- stencils done by one of the Ladies, printed by one of the Chaps and over half of the copies are hand delivered, a truly club effort. We have Bank-Holiday tours, usually based at Youth Hostels, but we do not promote any racing, though we do have in our midst quite a number of Members who,- in-their more youthful days did race, true •they do not now go as far or as fast as they once used to but they do still ride regularly for their own pleasiire. Although we are the 40+ we are mainly in the 60+ region and do have many members in their 70s so I am sure you would be OK with us for pade and distance. Members can, and often do, ride with more than one section, you will see this from the runs list. If you are in any area where there is a run you will be welcome to join in and we all look forward to meeting you. Sincerely, MINUTES OP THE ANNUAL GENERAL T3ETIHG O'F THE FORTY PLUS CYCLING CLUB. Meeting commenced at 1g,15pni kr.Trueman "being in the chair. The minutes of the previous AGM v/ere read and accepted as a true record. Prop. Mr.Jefford and Sec: by Mr.Collins, and all agreed. Matters Arising. i^Ir.Trueman mentioned the 50 year Celehra-tion Dinner and called upon Mr. Wooder to detail the change of venue, Mr.V/ooder gave details of the increased costs that we were asic'ed to pay at the Victory Services Cluh qnd said how Mrs.Gardner had telephoned all committee members about this and all had said that they thought that £10 - £11 was too expensive. He said that she had then called a special coimnittee meeting which Nr.Bill Jennings held at his home on Sunday 23rd November when it was agi'eed to ask Treetops Hotel what they could provide. At the meeting Mrs.Gardner spoke to the manager at Treetops .aM a booking W8,s agreed to for the last ^±we.AK^ Sunday in Ma.rch, 29th. a,nd the cost to each member would be £6. The announcement of this was accordingly put in the December copy of Signpost. The Deposit had been paid to Treetops and everything was now arranged. After being aske'd-'-by Mr.Moore about the reason for the rise ' in the price at 'the Victory, Services Club, Mr.V/ooder explained that on top of the cost of the mealV'-v^e-''would have to pay for the hall ,r""then""~S~^(|i30] ervice charge of 12-|% and' then a further charge of 15% VAT and this would mean that as the club had more or iess ,agreed to only charge members £5. each and subsidise the balance it would have made the club bankrupt, Mr,Turner (Corfield St) then suggested ••.that we should ask the BBC personal• ity v/ho did our film to come along.and some members spoke about getting the film again, Mrs.Engel had offered to lend it to us but Jlr.Engel said that this \'70uld not be possible as the . sets, for the showing of these films varied and it would probably be too difficult to match the sets up. The Chairman then mentioned the Annual Re-Union. The Secretary trw" read a itetter she had received from Mrs.Bruton saying that they would like to Hire the Methodist Hall for the occasion this year, as this would solve the problem of the possibility of b&d weather, and they could then hire the hall for a Saturday. Messrs-. Wooder, Drewett, Pemberton, Pinnimore, Trueman and Jefford all spoke about-this possibility. Mr.Jefford said ^ha"t he thought that for this year we should accept this offer. Mr.Engel ^"aid that he thought that it had to, be a Saturday because the Qhurch Hall would most probably be needed by the Church on Sundays. After being put to the members all agreed to ac-capt-, except 2, and Firs.Gardner said she 'ould contact Mrs.Bruton and arrange the re-ujiion for the last Saturda.y in June, this being nearest 'to the last Simday as v/e had originally planned, .• Mr,Pinnimore suggested that when Mrs,Gardner contg, cted Mrs.Bruton she should suggest that the club at least pay for the hire of the hall, ¥ijc, Wooder said that this charge could come from club funds and members should pay for their lunch as usual. All agreed. Mr.Bridson said that it would probably cost around £6. 8.s he knew of other church halls that were let for that suju. THE SECRETARY Then read her annual report, saying that the club had a good year. The Chairman proposed that the report be accepted, Mr, MartingeHseconded and all agreed. THE TREASURER then mentioned the Financial report and final accounts, it shewed that the club was in a sound financial position. Mr,Pinnimore (Auditor) said that he was quite satisfied with the state of the books and had no queries. All agreed to accept the accounts. Mr.Martingellasked if the club still had any cloth badges, and Mrs, PORTY-^PLUS CYCLING CLUB.
