அநந்தனின் அவதார ரகசியம்

பபாய்ளகய羿யான்

சீைர்க쿁ைன் காஞ்சீꯁரம் தி쏁ம்பிய யாதவப்ரகாஸர், ஒ쏁நாள் பப쏁மாள் வகாயிலில் ராமாꏁேளரக்கண்翁, ஆச்சர்யப் பட்ைார். பிற埁 இளையாழ்-வா쎿ைம், “ உன்ளனக்கண்翁 மிக மகிழ்ச்சியளைகிவறன். அந்தக்காட்羿-லி쏁ந்鏁 எப்ப羿த்தப்பி வந்தாய் ? “ என்쟁 வகட்க, ராமாꏁே쏁ம் நைந்தளவ-களை விவரமாக் 埂ற, இளதக்வகட்ை 埁쏁 இவன் அதிவமதாவி மட்翁- மில்ளல, பதய்வ அꏁக்ரஹ믁ம் ꯂர்ணமாக வாய்க்கப் பபற்றவன் என்쟁 உணர்ந்தார். பிற埁 믁ன்வபால் தம்மிைவம வந்鏁 வவதாந்தம் வாசிக்க வரச்பசான்னார். ராமꏁே쏁ம், அதற்埁 சம்மதித்鏁 믁ன் வபால் அவ쎿ைம் பாைம் கற்கச் பசன்றார்.

ஒ쏁சமயம், சில ஸ்ரீளவஷ்ணவர்கள், ஸ்ரீரங்கம் பசன்쟁, ஸ்ரீஆைவந்தாளர, த쎿சித்தனர். ஆைவந்-தா쏁ம் அவர்களை ஆசீர்வதித்鏁விட்翁, அவர்-களைப்பற்றி விசா쎿க்க, அவர்க쿁ம் தங்களை-ப்பற்றிக் 埂றிவிட்翁, பிற埁 ராமாꏁேளரப்பற்றிய விவரங்களை뿁ம் 埂றினார்கள். அவற்ளறக் வகட்ை ஆைவந்தார் ராமாꏁேளரக்காண ஆளசப்-பட்ைார். பிற埁 காஞ்சீꯁரம் எ폁ந்த쏁ைினார். தி쏁க்கச்சி நம்பிக쿁ம் அவளர எதிர்பகாண்翁 அளைத்鏁 வகாயி쯁க்埁 அளைத்鏁ச் பசன்쟁, பப쏁மாள் வசளவ பசய்鏁 ளவத்தார். பிற埁 அவர்கள் பிரதக்ஷணமாய் வ쏁ம்வபா鏁, ஆைவந்தார், “ ராமாꏁேர் யார் ? “ என்쟁வகட்க, நம்பி뿁ம், யாதவப்ரகாஸ쏁ைன் இ쏁ந்த சீைர்கைில், சிவப்பாக, ஆோꏁபாஹூவாக இ쏁ந்த ஒ쏁 பிள்ளைளயக் காண்பித்鏁 அவர்தான் ராமாꏁேர் என்쟁 埂ற, ஆைவந்தா쏁ம், இளையாழ்வாளர கண்埁ைிரக் கைாக்ஷித்鏁,

“ நம் ஸம்பிரதாய ஸ்தாபகராவான் “ என்쟁 埂றி-விட்翁 எம்பப쏁மாளன வநாக்கி, ஸ்ரீராமாꏁேர், விசிஷ்ைாத்ளவத சித்தாந்தத்தின், நிர்வாஹராக வவண்翁பமன்쟁 சரணாகதி பண்ணினார். ஆனால் அந்த믁ளற அவர் ராமாꏁேளர சந்திக்காமவல மீண்翁ம் ஸ்ரீரங்கம் ꯁறப்பட்翁ச் பசன்றார்.

காஞ்சி மன்னனின் மகளை ஒ쏁 சமயம் ப்ரஹ்ம ராக்ஷஸ் ஒன்쟁 பற்றிக்- பகாண்ை鏁. பலர் 믁யன்쟁ம் அளத விரட்ை 믁羿யவில்ளல. சிலர் யாத- 5

வப்ரகாஸர் ஒ쏁வரால்தான் அளத விரட்ை믁羿뿁ம் என்쟁 埂ற, மன்னன் ஆட்களை அꟁப்பினான். அளைத்鏁ச்பசல்ல வந்தவர்கைிைம், “ அந்த ப்ரஹ்மராக்ஷஸிைம் நான் வபா埁ம்ப羿 பசான்னதாகப் வபாய்ச் பசால்쯁-ங்கள். அ鏁 வபாய்வி翁ம் என்றார் “ அவர். தி쏁ம்பிச்பசன்ற அவர்க쿁ம்

அதனிைம் அவர் 埂றிய鏁வபால 埂றவவ, அந்த ப்ரஹ்மராக்ஷஸ், “ அவளர நான்-வபாகச் பசான்னதாகப் வபாய்ச் பசால்쯁-ங்கள் “ என்ற鏁. அவர்க쿁ம் அவ쎿ைம் பசன்쟁 埂ற, அவர் சீைர்க쿁ைன் அரண்-மளனக்埁 வந்தார். அங்埁, அவர் அளத விரட்ை மந்திர ேபங்களை உச்- ச쎿த்தார். ஆனால் அ鏁 அவர்믁ன்பாக இ쏁கால்களை뿁ம் நீட்羿க்-பகாண்翁 உட்கார்ந்鏁ைன், “ நீர் வபான ேன்மத்தில் ம鏁ராந்தகம் ஏ쎿யில் ஒ쏁 உ翁ம்பாக இ쏁ந்தீர். அங்埁 வந்த சில ஸ்ரீளவஷ்ணவர்கள் உண்ை மிச்சத்ளத நீ உண்ைதால் இந்த ேன்மாவில் பிறவிளயப் பபற்றீர். நாவனா வபான ேன்மாவில், ப்ராஹ்மண ஸ்வரஸ்ஷைனாக இ쏁ந்வதன். ஒ쏁 யாகம் பசய்뿁ம் வபா鏁 வநர்ந்த சிறிய தவ쎿னால் இ鏁வபால் மாறிவிட்-வைன்.ஆகவவ நீ வபாகச்பசான்னால் வபாகமாட்வைன். உன் சீைரான ராமா-ꏁேர் பசான்னால் வபாவவன் என்ற鏁. “ மன்னன் இளையாழ்வா쎿ைம் வவண்ை அவ쏁ம் அதனிைம்,” ப்ரஹ்மராக்ஷவஸ நீ என் பசால்ப羿 வகட்ப-தாக இ쏁ந்தால், உைவன இந்த பபண்ளண விட்翁ச்பசன்쟁 வி翁. அதற்埁 அளையாைமாக ஒ쏁 மரத்ளத வ ீழ்த்திவிட்翁 பசல். “ என்쟁 埂ற, அ鏁ퟁம் அவர்埂றிய鏁 வபாலவவ ஒ쏁 மரத்ளத சாய்த்鏁 விட்翁, அகன்ற鏁. மன்ன-ꟁம் அ쏁கிலி쏁ந்தவர்க쿁ம் ராமாꏁே쎿ன் மஹிளமளயப் வபாற்றிப் ꯁகழ்-ந்தனர். யாதவப்ரகாஸ쏁ம், சீைர்க쿁ம். தங்கள் இைம் வந்鏁 வசர்ந்தனர்.

வைக்கம்வபால், யாதவப்பிரகாஸர் உபநிஷத் வாக்யங்க쿁க்埁, அர்த்தம் பசால்லிக் பகாண்翁 இ쏁ந்தார். அப்வபா鏁 அவர், “ ஸர்வம் க쯁 இதம் ப்ரம்ம “ என்ற உபநிஷத் வாக்யத்திற்埁 அத்ளவத மதப்ப羿 அர்த்தம் 埂றி-னார். ஆனால் இளையாழ்வா쎿ன் மனம் அளத ஒப்பவில்ளல. அவர் விசிஷ்ைாத்ளவத சித்தாந்தத்தின்ப羿, பபா쏁ள்埂ற, 埁쏁விற்埁 வகாபம் வந்த鏁.

“ இனி நீ இங்埁 இ쏁க்க வவண்ைாம். உனக்埁 உகந்த இைத்ளதத் வதர்ந்鏁 பகாள் “ என்쟁 埂றிவிைவவ, ராமாꏁே쏁ம் தம் வ ீட்羿ற்埁த் தி쏁ம்பினார். அவ쏁ளைய தாயா쏁ம், “ நீ ப羿த்த鏁 வபா鏁ம், பப쏁மா쿁க்埁 ளகங்கர்யம் பசய்鏁 பகாண்羿쏁 “ என்쟁 埂றிவிைவவ, இளையாழ்வா쏁ம் தினம் சாளல-க்கிணற்றிலி쏁ந்鏁, வபர쏁ைாைꟁக்埁 தீர்த்தம் பகாண்翁வ쏁ம் ளகங்கர்ய-த்ளதச் பசய்鏁 பகாண்翁 வந்தார்.

|| Name of Godhai, given by Swami Desikan to AndAL ||

After this salutation to VaTapathra Saayee, we will offer our salutations to AndAL's illustrious father , who established that Sriman NarayaNA as the supreme Tattvam (Para Tattvam) in the court of the king:

SREEDHANVEE NAGARAADHEESA MANGALAASAASINOH ANISAM I NIRNEENATHA PARATATVAAYA VISHNUCHITTHAAYA MANGALAM II

On this seventh day of Marghazhi, let us reflect on greatness of the names of Godhai , given by Swami Desikan to AndAL .

Sri Summapatti Iyengar has written an insightful article on this subject and I will base this posting on many points assembled by him in his essay.

GodhA ************

In an earlier posting, I referred to one interpretation of Her name as " GAVAADHEEYATEH IDHI GODHAA ." That interpretation indicated that She was the one yielded by Bhumi Devi . This reference is associated with her birth under the Tulasi plant in the Nandavanam of VishNuchitthar at Srivilliputhur. I referred to her birth as being simiar to that of SeethA Devi , who was discovered by king Janaka, when he ploughed the field to prepare for the Yaga SaalA at Mithilai. has described SeethA's avathaaram as " UtthithA medhineem bhithvA " and saluted Her arrival as a result of splitting of the earth and SeethA arising out of that clevage of Bhumi Pradesam.

GodhA's name in this context has again been interpreted as "GHAANDHYATHEETHI GODHAA". The word "Ghandhyathethi" is equivalent to "Bhithvaa" or splitting of the earth. Here again GodhA's origin as the one arising from the clevage of earth as the incarnation of Bhumi Devi is indicated.

Vedic Origin of Godha's name ***************************

Earlier I referred to the Taittiriya manthram , " GruthEna SeethA-- " as being connected with Seetha and also GodhA because of their birth on the track created by the plough (Laankala Paddhathi or kalappai uzhudha vazhi).

The second association of the name GodhA with the Vedic text arises from her Prabhandhams , which sanctifies the jeevarAsis through Her AnushTaana Purva Grantham , Thiruppavai. In this context, The Name Godha has been understood as "GAA: DHADHAATHI IDHI GODHAA " . The Vedic context, the word "GAA: " stands for Vaak and Vedam. Rig Vedic passage celebrates this divine Vaak giving power this way:

" UPA NA : SAVANAAGMAHI SOAMSYA SOMAPAA: PIBHA I GEETHAA IDHEVATHO PADHA : " --Rig Vedam 1st ashtakam, 1.7

In Svapadesam, this passage is connected to Thiruppavai Nonbhu of GodhA, which is identical to the Soma Yagam of Vedic seers. The end is the Kshemam of the Universe. GodhA Herself states in Thiruppavai, "SELVA THIRUMAALAAL ENGHUM THIRUVARUL PERRU INPURUVAR". She helps the devotees of Her Lord receive the bounteous gifts and divine wisdom and wealth as spontaneously as ripe fruit from a loaded branch of a fruit tree. This thought is housed in yet another passage of Rig Vedam:

EVAAHY ASYA SUNRUTHAA VIRAPSI GHOMATHI MAHEE I PAKKAA SAAKHAA NA DAASUSHEH II -- Rig Vedam 1.8. 8

AndAL's Thiruppavai is indeed a ripe and delicious fruit bursting with fragrance and nourishing values for spiritual upliftment. One Taniyan for AndAL in this context salutes Thiruppavai as the seed of all (Vedam anaitthukkum vitthaahum).

The observance of Thiruppavai Nonbhu and the continued prayers of GodhA in NacchiyAr Thirumozhi to unite with Govindhan as her Consort again has vedic significance and provides additional evidence to the Vedic connotation of the Name GodhA . In the ancient text of Rig Vedam , two pasages have been identified as being close to the Vratham of AndAL to obtain the blessings of the Lord as her husband.

One passage prays to Devaa to accept the Vedic seer's prayer just as the (eternal) youth accepts the prayerful wishes for union with Him by young ladies of marriageable age (STHOYAM JUSHETHAAM YUAVASEVA KANYAANAAM VISVEHA DEVAOU SAVANAAYA GACCHATHAM). 8

Another Rig Vedic passage has the echo of the prayerful wish of sporting with the Yamunai Thuraivan through Jalakreetai. AndAL's indirect prayer is " Koodiyirunthu KuLirnthElOrempAvAi ". The Vedic passage refers to a Devan by the name of Soman (Govindhan) playing with the young women (Gopis) in the waters of the river:

YAABHI: SOMOH MODHATEH HARSHATEH CHA KALYAANIBHIRYUVATHIBHIRNAPARYA: I THAA ADHVARYOH MODHATEH APOH ACCHAA PAREHI YAHAASINCHAA OSHADHIBHI: PUNITHAATH II ----RIG VEDAM , 7TH ASHTAKAM, 7.24 RK

The Connection between GodhA and Soodi Koduttha NAcchiyAr ************************************************************

The Syllable "GOH" has also the meaning of Koondhal or the tresses of Hair of a lady. DHAA means one who gave. AndAL of beautiful black tresses of Hair wore the garlands prepared by her father and then gave it to Vatapathra Sayee to wear it. In the grammatical context, "DHAA" also is connectable to " Dhaip Sodhaneh ". That leads onto a meaning of pure , sacred and beautiful (Thooymai , Azhagu ). Swami Desikan salutes this "Soodikkoduttha NaacchiyAr" at number of places in his GodhA sthuthi:

1. DHATTEH NATHENA SIRASAA TAVA MOWKTHI MAALAAM 2. SOWBHAGYA SAMPADHABHISHEKHA MAHAADHIKAARAM 3.MOWLISRAJAA TAVA MUKUNDHA KIREETA BHAAJAA

Hence, the name " Soodikkoduttha gandham kamazhum Thirukkuzhal NaacchiyAr " is an appropriate name for GodhA Piratti.

GodhA: One who has been sanctified by Vedic way and given as Kanyaa Dhaanam by PeriyAzhwAr : ********************************************************************************************

The name GodhA also stands for " Odhi KodukkapattavaL ". The word "Odhi " means sanctified by the Veda Manthraas. AndAl herself describes her VivAham to Govindhan in the proper Vedic Way in the VaraNamiyaram section of Nacchiyaar Thirumozhi this way:

1. " YENNAI MAGHAL PESI MANTHIRITTHU " --NT 6.3

2. VAAI NALLAAR MARAI ODHI MANTHIRATTHAAL PAASILAI NAANAL PADUTTHU PARIDHI VAITTHU KAAICHINA MAAKALIRANAN YEN KAI PARRI THEE VALAM SEYAA KANAA KANDEHN -- NT 6. 7

Here she refers to the Kanyaa VaraNam, PaaNi GrahaNam and the SEVEN STEPS around the fire as described in the Rig Vedic section ( X .32.1 and X . 85)

May the Veda , GodhA guide us further into the understanding of Her divine AruLiccheyalkaL.

Koorathazhwan was born as Kuresan in a small hamlet 'Kooram' near Kanchipuram, in the year of 1010 A.D (Sowmya year, Thai month, Hastham star) in an affluent family. He belonged to the clan of 'Harita', who were popular landlords. Koorathazhwan was married at a young age to Andalamma, a devoted and pious lady. Both of them led a happy and peaceful life. They were deeply devoted to Lord Varadaraja Perumal. The pious couple were very famous in the holy town of Kanchi, for their unstinting philanthropy and kindness. Their son was Parasara Bhattar. Ekadasi is the most sought after festival of temple town Guruvayur and devotees from all around throng the famed Sree Krishna temple to participate in the much popular festival. The Ekadasi festival coincides with the Mandala season and also at a time when temples in Kerala begin to reverberate with the festival tunes. And each year thousands of devotees from across the State congregate at the Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple to take part in the Ekadasi celebrations.

It’s believed that it was during the Suklapaksha Ekadasi day of the Malayalam month of Vrischikam that Lord was reincarnated as Ekadasi Tithi in the form of a Devi. This day is also observed as Holy Gita Day as it was on this auspicious day that Lord Krishna imparted the teachings of Gita to Arjuna.

Yet another legend says that Adi Sanakaracharya was flying over the Sree Krishna temple on this particular day. Since he did not bother to attend the Ekadasi Ezhunellippu that was going on in the temple premises, all of a sudden he lost his supernatural powers and fell flat in front of Lord Guruvayoorappan. There are still indications of Sankara’s body found on the ground in the temple.

Nirjala Ekadasi also known as Pandav Bhim Ekadasi is also an important and significant Ekadasis, and devotees do not even drink water on the day.

Legend has it that Bhima, the second of Pandava brothers, wanted to observe Ekadasi still ate food, since fasting was not possible. Sage advised Bhim to observe Nirjala Ekadasi fasting which falls during the waxing phase (Shukla Paksha) in Jyeshta month as it has the benefits of observing all the 24 Ekadasis. Thus Bhim was able to get the benefits of all Ekadasis by observing Nirjala Ekadasi, without even drinking water.

Nirjala Ekadasi is one of the strictest fast in Hindu religion and among all Ekadasis. Nirjala means ‘without water.’ Staunch Vishnu devotees who undertake this fast does not drink water while fasting on the day. No food is also consumed on the day. It is believed that observing Nirjala Ekadasi is equal to going on pilgrimage. It is believed that after death people who have observed Nirjala Ekadasi are received by messengers from Vaikunta, abode of Vishnu, and not by Yama, the god of death.

Kaisika Ekadasi: Belief is that those who undertake fast, and listen to Kaisika Puranam, on Kaisika Ekadasi will attain Vaikunta Moksham. 18

Kaisika Puranam revolves round Nampaduvan, belonging to the Baanar family, his unflinching faith in Lord Nambi and how he was instrumental in liberating a Rakshasa from a curse.

Caught by the demon, Nampaduvan pleads with him to allow him to go to the temple and observe the Ekadasi ritual that of singing the Lord's praise.

Unable to convince the Rakshasa, Nampaduvan talks about Sathya Sankalpam: “The world was created through ‘promises' and continues to exist as a result of trust in each other.”

Nampaduvan makes 18 promises that night to the Rakshasa. Through these promises, narrated beautifully in the Kaisika Puranam as part of this lengthy discussion between Nampaduvan and Rakshasa, one comes to know of the basic values in life.

It is the eighteenth promise that finally moves the demon. It goes thus: “Swarva Swamiyum Pradhaana Sriman Narayananaiyum Devathai Galaiyum Samamaaga Bhaavikiravan Yaavaroruvan, Avanai Poley Nithya Samsaari Aaven.” (“If I do not return, I would have committed the biggest sin that exists – that of comparing and equating Lord Narayana with others. And I will become a sinner who will never get liberation from this cycle of births.”)

This extraordinary promise moves the Rakshasa and he lets Nampaduvan go,

Wanting the fruits of Nampaduvan's devotion, for his own liberation. Nambaduvan shares with him the ‘Kaisika' verses, which he had sung that very night in front of Lord Nambi. Just listening to these verses helps the Rakshasa attain Vaikunta Moksham. Kaisika Puranam, which is a part of Varaha Puraanam, showcases Lord Narayana as the supreme force. Parasara Bhattar, son of Koorathazhvaan, took up the story of a complex Kaisika Puranam (in Sanskrit) and wrote the vyakyaanam, in Tamil, in a simple, easily understandable language.

Devsayani Ekadasi: Ashadh Shukla Paksha Ekadashi is known as Devshayani Ekadasi. It is said that Lord Vishnu goes to sleep on this day and wakes up after four months on Prabodhini Ekadasi. Lord Krishna explained the significance of Shayani Ekadasi to Yudhisthira. The story is about a dedicated King - Mandata. The pious king’s kingdom had faced drought for three years. In order to please the rain gods he met sage . The Sage advised King to fast on Devshayani Ekadashi with the people of his kingdom. Following the sage’s advice the King along with his people observed fast. And by the blessings of Lord Vishnu, there was a heavy rain. This Rain brought an end to all their miseries. Hence observing fast on Devshayani Ekadashi is considered to provide prosperity and happiness. 19

Mal Masa (Padmini) Ekadasi

The Ekadasi of Malmasa or Purushotam Maas (Adhimasa) is called the Padmini Ekadashi. On this day, fast is observed and of - and -Krishna is performed. This Ekadashi has a special significance, since it does not occur every year. Person should perform full day fasting on Padmini Ekadashi. And, performing Jagran in the night is really significant, on this worshiping Lord Shiva, offering water, Bel-leaves, Datura and flowers to Shiva Linga.

The story of Padmini Ekadasi is related of Ravan, the king of Lanka. Once, Ravan went for Digvijay (getting victories in all directions). In this journey of victory, he got defeated by Kartavirya Sahastrarjun. On getting defeated, he had to stay in prison of that king for many years. Finally he got free by the grace of Rishi. God Narad was very happy by the imprisonment of Ravan and he asked Rishi the reason behind Ravan’s defeat.

Then, Rishi said that Kartavirya Arjun can be defeated only by Lord Vishnu, Because, his mother Padmini and father Kartavirya performed strong meditation in a wish for a child. And, as told by Mahasati Anusuiya, both of them observed the fast of Padmini Ekadashi. Pleased by their devotion, Lord Vishnu appeared before them and, blessed them with a heroic son.

Papankusha Ekadasi is the Ekadashi which falls on shukla paksha of Ashwin month. Because of the power of eradication the sins, it is called ‘Papankunsha Ekadasi’. This auspicious ekadashi is also known as Ashwina-shukla Ekadasi. Fasting and observing silence vow on this day eliminate all sins.

The Story is about a hunter named Krodhana who lived in the city of Vindhyachal. He was engaged in all the wicked deeds like theft, killing animals, torturing others etc. He continued this malicious act till the end 20

of his death. At the final moments, Lord Yama sent his representatives down to the Earth with the command of bringing him to hell. Krodhana was miserable with the fear of death; he approached Sage Angira – one of the Saptharishis. The Sage advised Krodhana to observe fast on the day of Papankusha Ekadashi which would fall on the very next day and worship Lord Vishnu. Krodhana faithfully observed Papankusha Ekadashi and the austerities advised by Sage Angira. Finally, he attained Salvation at the Feet of Lord Sriman Narayana.

Parivatini Ekadasi is the Bhadrapada Shukla Ekadasi and worshiping Vamana avatar on this day is equivalent to the worship of Trinity Brahma-Vishnu-Mahesh. Like other Ekadashi this one also holds a unique story and great significance. Besides freeing you from Sins this Ekadashi also fulfills your wishes. Parivartini Ekadashi is also known as Parshva Ekadasi, Jal Zilani Ekadasi or Vamana Ekadashi. Story of Vamana or parivartini Ekadasi is about King Bali and Lord Vishnu’s Dwarf Avatar - Vamana avatar. King Bali was very rich, honest, compassionate, justice loving and. above all he was a great devotee of lord Vishnu. Due to the power of his worship he started ruling the position of . As a result Indra approached Lord Vishnu to save his kingdom.

Lord Vishnu took the form of Vamana – a dwarf and went to King Bali who was conducting a huge . King Bali was performing Daan, when and the young Vamana asked for three steps of land. King Bali accepted this small request. After that, Lord Vishnu increased his size. With his first step he covered the entire Earth, the second took the entire universe and when no space was left for the third step, King Bali offered his head. As soon as he placed his foot over the head of Bali, he got pushed deep to the Patal Lok.

Satisfied with King Bali’s devotion, Lord Vishnu blessed him that he will live constantly with King Bali.

Bhishma Ekadasi is observed in the Magha Masa which will come during the January and February.

Part 194. Srigarbhah,Paramesvarah

The perfect and dear to Sriman Narayana is said to be, one who is free from malice towards all beings, who is freely as well as compassionate, who has no feeling of me and is aloof from egoism ,to whom joy and sorrow one alike, and who is forgiving by nature, who is ever content and mentally united to HIM, who has subdued in Him in mind, body and speech and has a firm resolve ,who has surrendered his mind, and intellect to Him by reciting His Namas, meditating and worshiping for ever. The word Krishna means everlasting immortal and eternal joy. More utterance of Krishna namas, the divinised humanity burns to ashes the accumulated sins. Hence nama sankeerthanam may be considered as Nithya . Actions below dignity of man's evolutions are Nishidha karma. Actions prompted by personal desires and lusts are Kamya karma. Daily duties that are to be fulfilled by all is nithya karma. Special divine that come to us in special situation are naimitya karma. The duties are to be performed for family relations, community, country and the world at large. It is said everyone must fulfill all obligatory duties as best as possible with a spirit of non-attachment joy and dedication. Hence utterances of Krishna or namas often makes one to do his nithya karma, and easily pave way for getting His blessings. Now on Dharma sthothram.

In 376th nama Srigarbhah it is meant as Sriman narayana has Sri Maha always with Him in His sport. He is one in whose abdomen, ccontaining all glories within. It is said as Aisvarya of Sriman Narayana is the universe and this universe resides in Him. All 40

powers and glories that are manifested in the universe are also ever in Him. Andal in Thiruppavai ,concuding pasuram says as' Selvat thiruamalal engum Thiru arul petru inburuga ' as Let all be prosperous and be happy in both present and future births with Glorious Sriman Narayana's bountiful grace. .In the same Thiruppavai 25th pasuram as thiruthakka selvamum sevagamum ,by singing the excellence of Sriman Narayana in the company of Sri Maha Lakshmi with His wealth, prosperity, skill and courage ,everyone is sure to be free from worries and be happy for ever. Sri Vaishnavites call srimanNarayana as Sriyapathi ,Lakshmi narayana ,. Vaishnava Agamas also describe Him as being ever with Sri Maha lakshmi, who is dsignated as Vishnu sakthi. Nammazhwar in Thiruvaimozhi 1.5.5 says as Harbouring Lakshmi with deer vision like eyes in your heart of divine nature as maan aye nokki matavalai maarvil kondai mathava . In 9.10.10 Alli maathar amarum Thirumarbinan as Sri mahalakshmi seating in lotus flower is residing in the chest of Sriman narayana. Agalakillen iraiyum enru alarmel mangai urai marba in 6.10. 10 pasuram on Thiruvenkatamudayan also Nammazhwar says that Alarmel Mangai never wants to leave from Him and ever resides in His chest. Thus Srigarbha is Sri Maha Lakshmi sametha Sriman Narayana.

In 377th nama Paramesvarah, it is meant as The Supreme (Parama) Lord (Isvara). Sriman Narayana is the Supreme Consciousness whose expressions are all the deities”. The term Isvara indicates both might and glory and as one who is Omnipotent and All- glorious. Sri Rama is said as a Supreme personality in Sri ValmikiRamayana as one who has the greatest moral power ,not having the slightest trace of selfishness or fear ,who considers himself as a mere instrument in the hands of God and who wishes to serve god can only give unconditioned protection to anyone who surrenders and this is what ri Rama exemplifies here. He is the supreme ruler, inseparable from His consort Sri Maha Lakshmi.In Gita 13.27,' samam sarvesa bhutesu tristantam paramesvaram ' informs that the supreme being who dwells alike in all beings. Sriman Narayana is one and yet He is certainly all pervading. By His inconceivable potency, He is in one form. He is present everywhere, as the sun appears in many places at once. In Gita 10.20, says as "aham atma Sarva bhutasya sthitha , whichmeans as Sri Krishna declares that He is seated in the hearts of all living beings ,He is the beginning middle and end of all beings. In Brahma Samitha 5.47, Sriman Narauyana is said as the beginning, of this universe maintainer of the universal manifestation and the end of all energy., Sriman Narayana is paraman, who deivered Geethopadesam in Sri Krishna Avatharam ,and instructs all jeevarthmas to worship Him, to do kainkaryam and to go in the path of prabhathi . Nammazhwar was totally surrendered only before Paraman Sriman Narayanan. Nammazhwar in Thiruvaimozhi 10.4. uses the term Paramparan in 3 pasurams, forinforming the supreme personality of Sriman Narayana. It is said as . Pani nenje naalum parama paramparanai,is one with full consciousness pray Paraman,,and then Sriman Narayanan is sure to save us from no more births. Andal in Thiruppavai second pasuram says as Paiya Thuyinra paraman adi padi .Sriman Narayana is Supreme personality who is sleeping in Thirupparkadal. Andal tells as oozhi muthalvan, devathi devan manthukkiniyan, uthaman ,Hence He is Parameswara.

" நல்ல பவற்றிச் பசய்திவயா翁, ஆஞ்சவனயன் வ쏁கிறான், இல்லாவிட்ைால் இப்ப羿க் கர்ேிக்க மாட்ைான்," என்றார். உைவன வானரர்கள், மரங்கைி쯁ம், 埁ன்쟁கைி쯁ம் ஏறி, பறந்鏁 வ쏁ம் ஆஞ்சவனயளன ஆவவலா翁 எதிர்பகாண்ைார்கள். எல்வலா쏁ம் ஒன்쟁 埂羿 ஆஞ்சவனயளன 毂ழ்ந்鏁 பகாண்ைார்கள்.

After Andal instructed the deity of rain to bless the surrounding areas with good shower, her friends felt that their prayers will not be fulfilled. Andal was surprised to hear them say so as the deity of rain had agreed to provide good showers to fulfill the prayers of the villagers. She asked her friends to explain the reason why they felt that their wishes will not be fulfilled.

They answered that, ‘we cannot trust Krishna! He has sent the deity of rain to pull wool over our eyes! He will say that He has fulfilled our wishes by providing good rainfall and escape from giving Himself to us! We need Him not just rain!’

Andal asked the girls, ‘Why aren’t you able to trust Krishna completely? Why do you feel that He will cheat us?’

‘Of course we trust Him but we are afraid that our might stand in our way. Because of the multitude of sins we had committed in the past we won’t be able to attain Him. Krishna will not come to us because He will blame our past karmas and say that He cannot bless us!’

One of Andal’s friends narrated an incident from , ‘Have you heard about the meeting between Udhankar Maharishi and Dwarakadeesha? After the Mahabharata war Lord

Krishna went to the ashramam of Udhankar. The Maharishi asked Krishna why Perumal didn’t try to prevent the war. Lord Krishna replied that He tried His best and even went as a messenger to Hastinapuram but Duryodana refused to pay heed to His advice. The Maharishi asked why Perumal did not control Duryodana and force Him to listen to the good advice. Lord

Krishna avoided answering the Maharishi’s question and said that He had come to provide a boon to Udhankar. The Maharishi then asked Krishna to provide relief for his thirst whenever the

Maharishi felt tired and thirsty. Lord Krishna agreed and returned to Dwaraka. Perumal then instructed Devendra to provide the rishi with a cup full of amrutham whenever the rishi felt tired.

Devendra agreed but did not want to comply with Krishna’s request. Very soon Udhankar felt 49

very thirsty and he meditated upon Lord Krishna. As per Perumal’s instruction Devendra came with amrutham but he came in the guise of a Chandala and gave amrutham to the rishi in a cup made out of a dog’s hide. Devendra said that he had come per the instruction of Perumal’s instruction and requested the rishi to accept the drink. The rishi did not believe Devendra and refused to accept Amrutham. He once again meditated upon Dwarakadeesha. Lord Krishna appeared before the rishi and asked him if he felt refreshed. The rishi asked Krishna why he had played such a mean trick on him by sending a Chandala to give him drink out of a cup made out of dog’s hide. Lord Krishna then explained about Devendra’s ploy and rebuked the rishi stating that the rishi should have accepted the drink as Devendra said that he had come per Krishna’s instruction. Perumal was upset that the rishi did not believe in Him completely and had missed out on the opportunity to drink amrutham. He then blessed the rishi that whenever the rishi felt thirsty it will rain and asked the rishi to collect the rain water and drink. Krishna thus outwitted even a Maharishi like Udhankar therefore how can we trust Him?’

Andal replied that, ‘Udhankar did not have “Maha Vishwasam”. He did not trust Perumal completely; if he had trusted Krishna he would have accepted amrutham from Devendra. We are not like Udhankar. We believe that Perumal will definitely save us. We have a weapon to prevent the sins from even coming near us. This weapon is His nama sankeerthanam! If we perform saranagathi and surrender to Him, He will make sure that we accept Him when He comes to us. If we surrender to Him, we will not react like Udhankar when he refused amrutham. His nama sankeerthanam will remove the obstacles in our path which prevent us from reaching Him.’maayanai mannu vada madhurai maindhanai(th)

Andal says that Krishna is a “mayan”; He does try to pull wool over the eyes of people but He does not trick those who surrender to Him and are His Bagawathas. He acts as a mayan in order to protect His Bagawathas from the harm caused by others. 50

In Vishnu Puranam Parasarar Maharishi tells us the following story of Prahaladan. Prahaladan was a great devotee of Perumal. He wished that his father Hiranyakaship would treat him with affection. Perumal wanted to make Prahaladan’s wish come true. As Hiranyakashipu hated

Prahaladan because he was always chanting the names of Lord Narayana, Perumal came in the guise of Hiranyakashipu. He showered affection upon Prahaladan so that Prahaladan should think that his father Hiranyakashipu was treating him with love. After many such years of treating Prahaladan with affection, when the right time arrived, as Lord Narasimha, Perumal killed Hiranyakashipu. Perumal acted as “mayan” by even disguising Himself as Hiranyakashipu in order to please His dear devotee Prahaladan!

He as “mayan” confused Kamsa a lot when He incarnated as Lord Krishna. The Lord commanded to transfer Devaki’s seventh child to the womb of Rohini. Thus the people thought that Devaki’s pregnancy had been terminated. Kamsa felt confused because he was unsure if he had to count this pregnancy as the seventh child or not.

The Lord also chose midnight to incarnate. According to the , we the jeevatma are the self of our body; the jeevatmas also have a self which is none other than the

Supreme . Thus the real self of our body is the Supreme Self within us the jeevatmas.

Thus when we sleep we are in union with our real self. Our Lord metes out punishment to certain wrong-doers by taking away their ability to fall asleep. The people who do not deserve sleep are as follows.

a) Those who steal others wealth

b) Those involved in illegal activities

Our Lord thus punished Kamsa by incarnating at midnight thus disturbing Kamsa’s slumber.

Kamsa had not been able to sleep as he was anxious about the Lord’s incarnation. He spent months suffering from chronic insomnia. For the first time since the time he had heard about 51

Devaki’s pregnancy, he fell into a deep slumber overcome by the powers of Yoga Maya. This slumber would be cut short soon and Kamsa would spend the rest of his life unable to sleep.

Krishna arranged for Yoga maya to inform Kamsa that Perumal had incarnated thus making life filled with worry for Kamsa.

Mayan also refers to the dark complexion of Krishna as in Tamil “Maa niram” means dark complexion; therefore, Mayan means the one with dark complexion.

Perumal has five states which are Para, Vyuha, Antaryami, Vibhava and Archai. The first four pasurams refer to one of the five states. The first pasuram talks about Para Vasudevan, the second about Vyuha Avataram as Sheerabhdhi Nathan; the third pasuram is dedicated to

Vibhava avataram and the fourth to Antaryami. The fourth pasuram speaks the glory of those people who meditate upon the Antaryami. This fifth pasuram speaks about Archavataram referred to by “vada Mathurai mannum mainthanai” i.e. He is always present in the Divya

Desams like Vada Mathurai. Perumal is very fond of Mathura and of water from Yamuna. thooya peru neer yamunai(th) thuRaivanai

Andal calls Yamuna as pure to compare her qualities with River Godavari. Lord Rama lived on the shores of Godavari for twelve years with Piratti and Lakshmana. When Ravana kidnapped Sita Piratti, Piratti requested Godavari to inform Lord Rama. Godavari was afraid of

Ravana and hence failed to pass on the message to Lord Rama. Thus she lost her sanctity.

Whereas, Yamuna flowed in the backyard of Kamsa; yet she made way for Vasudevar to pass with the divine child unaffected by her flood waters. Thus Yamuna became very pure.

Anyone who does not stand up to support truth and dharma is not pure just like river Godavari.

For example, if a man does not ask his wife to stop tormenting his aged parents he becomes impure.Andal sang this pasuram as a gopi. How could a gopi known that Yamuna allowed

Vasudevar to cross the river since even Kamsa did not know about this? Nanda Gopan assumed Krishna to be his own son and only became aware of the fact that Krishna is the son of Vasudevar when Akrurar informed him. Therefore how could a gopi know these things? The gopi girls came to know of these secrets because River Yamuna shared her secrets with them!

River Godavari was very upset that she lost her sanctity. She pleaded with Goda Nachiar

(Andal) to help her. Nachiar asked her not to worry since River Godavari shared the first half of her name “Goda” with Nachiar thereby regaining her sanctity! aayar kulaththinil thOnRum aNi viLakkai(th) thOnRum aNiviLakkai could be split as thonrum maNiviLakkai or as thonrum aNiviLakkai. maNiviLakkai means like a lamp made out of rubies that shines beautifully. Krishna incarnated with brilliant effulgence. A lamp made out of precious gems shines because of reflecting the gem’s radiance. It is not required to add oil to this lamp or even to clean it. Bagawan is like this self-illuminating lamp. The lamp made out of precious gems shines without oil; like this, Krishna blesses us even if we do not offer Him anything. aNiviLakai means, Krishna incarnated as the decorative lamp of Thiruvayarpadi.

Bagawan is unable to show His quality of at Sri Vaikuntham as all the Nityatmas and Muktatmas are always happy. He incarnates to show His quality of compassion which makes Him shine like a lamp in a dark room that dispels darkness. thaayai(k) kudal viLakkam seydha dhaamOdharanai(th)

Lord Krishna blessed more women than men during Krishnavataram.

As soon as He incarnated as a child with four arms, Devaki said, ‘Please, let Kamsa not find out that you have arrived. Let not his evil gaze fall on your beautiful form today!’

Devaki continued, ‘You are the sustainer of this and other Universes. You are beyond comprehension and because of your grace towards us; we have been blessed by you to behold this beautiful form of yours! Still, our mind is agitated for we fear that Kamsa will rush in any moment and behold you! We pray to you to appear as a normal infant.’

The Lord said, ‘I will conceal my divine form as per your wish. You must carry me to the house of Raja Nanda. You must leave me in his house and bring his new born daughter here.’

He concealed His form to obey His mother Devaki. At the age of 24, Lord Rama obeyed his father’s wishes and left for the forest; but, this divine child obeyed his parents within few minutes of his appearance and concealed his divine form! Lord felt very bad that He had not listened to the words of His mother Kausalya when she urged Him not to go live in the forest. According to the Vedas, if the mother gives instructions which contradict the instructions given by ones father then that person must choose to obey his/her mother’s words only. Lord Rama was unable to obey the commands of mother Kausalya. As soon as mother Devaki requested Him to hide His divine appearance He did not argue with her. He could have argued that He was capable of 54

destroying Kamsa then and there itself but instead He appeared instantly as a normal human child. He felt happy that He could obey the words of His mother!

To dispel His mother’s fear of Kamsa, He appeared with only two arms till the time when Kamsa was killed by Him.

To obey His foster mother Yashoda, He let Himself to be tied to the mortar by Yashoda. thooyOmaay vandhu naam thoomalar thoovi(th) thozhudhu thooyOmaay vandhu does not just mean physical purity but also refers to approaching Perumal with the intention of seeking His company and not for getting our wishes granted. When we go to temples we should ask Bhattar to perform archanai in Perumal’s name instead of asking him to perform archanai for our benefit by telling him our gothram, nakshatram etc.

Thoomalar also refers to controlling our senses and not harming other people/living beings by our mind, words or deed.

Dhama pushpam, sama pushpam and satyam ashta vidha pushpam are the Lord’s favourite flowers. Dhamam pushpam is living without ego or superiority complex. Dhmama pushpam is obtained when we do not try to get credit for every deed we do or we do not try to be always the centre of attention.

Samam pushpam is treating everyone equally.

This line tells us to sing His nama sankeerthanam and meditate upon Him. The Lord Narasimha is Lord of Dharmapuri. A large number of devotees, daily 1,000 on an average, visit the sacred shrine of Lord Narasimha to pay their homage to Him. believe Lakshmi Narasimha to be a half man, half lion form of Vishnu. The story behind this is that the a local being, named Hiranya had obtained from God Bramha immunity from attack from "man or beast". This person then began abusing his powers and began forcing others to worship him, as if he were a God. Among those abused was his own son, Prahlada a staunch worshiper of Vishnu. In order to surmount Bramha's condition, Vishnu assumed a form that was neither man nor beast, but a combination of both, and then went on to finish off this person with his nails. At that time he was very furious and called as UGRA NARASIMHA and subsequently the saints and Gods prayed him to be cool and Narasimha came to Dharmapuri and undergone a deep meditation with yoga mudra and was called Yoga Narasimha. At the same place a shrine was constructed by then king of Dharmapuri, Dharma Varma by whom the town was called as DHARMAPURI. Dharmapuri is called after the name of King Dharmavarma who was a staunch devotee of Lord Narasimha, is known for its rich culture and and produced many artists in the disciplines of theatre, classical music and poetry. The town is well located on the banks of Holy River Godavary and by virtue of this it is called as Dakshin Kashi. The trishataka kartha Kavi Sheshappa hailed from this place only. When the question arose who the Supreme One was, the Devas claimed the honour as theirs. Indra said that since he was the king of the Devas, he was the Paratva. Brahma felt that since he was the creator, he represented Paratva. It was Garuda who put a stop to these disputations saying: “The one whom I carry around on my hands, is the Supreme One.”

When the Lord battles Narakasura, Garuda joins in. When Satyabhama wants the Parijaata tree, it is Garuda who carries it on his back. When the elephant Gajendra’s foot is seized by the crocodile, the elephant tries his best to extricate himself, and when he is unable to, he calls out to Lord Narayana for help. The Lord is anxious to rush to the elephant’s help. Garuda insists that he will take the Lord to the elephant’s side, because only then the elephant will feel assured that the One who has come is indeed the Lord. Thus Garuda is always anxious to serve the Lord and to establish His Paratva, said Kidambi Narayanan in a discourse. The Lord, anxious to rescue Gajendra, presses down on Garuda with His foot, urging him to move faster. Thus it is Garuda who brings the Lord to help those who call out to Him in distress.

Garuda is the embodiment of the Vedas. He is the vaahana of the Lord in the Nitya Vibhuti and in the Leela Vibhuti. He is also called Suparna, because of the beauty of his wings. He is the king among birds (Pakshiraja). When Rama and Lakshmana are hit by the naga pasam, it is Garuda who brings them out of their daze. Periazhvar, Andal’s foster father, was born the amsa of Garuda. At Theruzhundur divya desam, Garuda is seen standing very close to the Lord. At Ahobilam, Garuda’s penance earned for him a darshan of Lord Narasimha as Jwala Narasimha.

Swami Nammazhvar composed verses imagining himself as Parankusa Nayaki, a girl in love with the Lord and pining for Him. In one verse, he accuses Garuda of not allowing the Lord to be by the side of Parankusa Nayaki, but hurrying Him on His way. Later, when the Lord is beside Parankusa Nayaki, Swami Nammazhvar praises the same Garuda for having brought the Lord to her side. Thus it is Garuda who takes the Lord to wherever He wants to go.
