It has a lot to offer. Military logos are usually quite colorful and attractive; there is a lot of history connected with each unit represented; and logo ―formats‖ run from crests to cartoon characters and everything in between. You‘ve certainly got a wide variety of covers to work with here. You‘ll run across logos for individual units ranging in size from companies to entire armies, individual ships to naval groups, squadrons, air wings, and more. Then there are the logos for the different branches within branches. For example, within the Army, you‘d find logos for Army Air Corps, Military Police, Infantry, Armor, Rangers, etc...even bands! Then there are the logos for the various bases, forts, arsenals, air stations, naval stations, and the list goes on. Of course, you‘ll find basic branch logos for Army, Navy Air Force, Marines, and the like. And....you‘re certainly not limited to just the U.S. Military. You can find a very nice selection within Canadian Military covers, as well, and the Armed Forces of other countries around the world are fair game, too! Realistically, however, most collectors would really only have access to to U.S.

  • Deepsea Coral Statement
Scientists’ Statement on Protecting the World’s Deep-Sea Coral and Sponge Ecosystems As marine scientists and conservation biologists, we are profoundly concerned that human activities, particularly bottom trawling, are causing unprecedented damage to the deep-sea coral and sponge communities on continental plateaus and slopes, and on seamounts and mid-ocean ridges. Shallow-water coral reefs are sometimes called “the rainforests of the sea” for their extraordinary biological diversity, perhaps the highest anywhere on Earth. However, until quite recently, few people—even marine scientists—knew that the majority of coral species live in colder, darker depths, or that some of these form coral reefs and forests similar to those of shallow waters in appearance, species richness and importance to fisheries. Lophelia coral reefs in cold waters of the Northeast Atlantic have over 1,300 species of invertebrates, and over 850 species of macro- and megafauna were recently found on seamounts in the Tasman and Coral Seas, as many as in a shallow-water coral reef. Because seamounts are essentially undersea islands, many seamount species are endemics—species that occur nowhere else—and are therefore exceptionally vulnerable to extinction. Moreover, marine scientists have observed large numbers of commercially important but increasingly uncommon groupers and redfish among the sheltering structures of deep-sea coral reefs. Finally, because of their longevity, some deep-sea corals can serve as archives of past climate conditions that are important to understanding global climate change. In short, based on current knowledge, deep-sea coral and sponge communities appear to be as important to the biodiversity of the oceans and the sustainability of fisheries as their analogues in shallow tropical seas.

TH PI LE NN VIL EB CK R ERG RO ANNIVE SARY Greetings Friends Rockville, Maryland and Pinneberg, Germany have enjoyed a wonderful Sister City relationship since 1957! The calendar year of 1997 was spent in delightful celebration of this 40 year relationship. Throughout the 40th Anniversary year, many new and lasting friendships were made, gifts exchanged, and a greater understanding and appreciation of each other's culture was established. It was a landmark celebration! Highlights of the year included an official delegation visit from Rockville to Pinneberg including Mayor Rose Krasnow, Councilmen Bob Dorsey, Jim Marrinan and Bob Wright, and City Manager Rick Kuckkahn as well as 35 other residents and friends. In May an official delegation from Pinneberg visited Rockville, and participated in the City's Hometown Holidays celebration and Memorial Day parade. Pinneberg Mayor Horst-Werner Nitt made his first visit to the United States on this trip. In October, Rockville welcomed a visit from the Deutsch-Amerikanische Gesellschaft Rockville-Pinneberg (the Sister City Club in Pinneberg). October also saw the 11th annual Volksmarch in Rockville, and the first annual German Style Bierfest, sponsored by the Rockville Sister City Corporation. We invite you to enjoy our memories, and share the warmth that permeated across the continents in 1997. This 40th anniversary booklet depicts the similarities we share, and the appreciation for friendship we embrace. • Traditionelle Schiffe / VOLLSCHIFFE
Gruppe SCHONER Klipper reine Schoner Bramsegel-Schoner Goélette Sprietsegel-Schoner Stagsegel-Schoner Tosegel-Schoner 3. Gruppe KETSCH Galeass Galiot Ketsch Kutter Yawl 4. Gruppe EWER verschiedene Ewer-Typen 5. Gruppe TJALKEN verschiedene Plattboden-Typen 6.
