Contact: [email protected] 1 Digital Surrealism: Visualizing Walt Disney Animation Studios Abstract There are a number of fruitful digital humanities approaches to cinema and media studies, but most of them only pursue traditional forms of scholarship by extracting a single variable from the audiovisual text that is already legible to scholars. Instead, cinema and media studies should pursue a mostly-ignored “digital-surrealism” that uses computer-based methods to transform film texts in radical ways not previously possible. This article describes one such method using the z-projection function of the scientific image analysis software ImageJ to sum film frames in order to create new composite images. However, while Disney often has been associated with themes such as childhood, magic, and innocence, many of the company’s animated films have simultaneously been criticized for their offensive and quite problematic take on race and ethnicity, as well their heavy reliance on cultural stereotypes. This study aims to evaluate Disney’s portrayals of racial and ethnic minorities, as well as determine whether or not the nature of the company’s portrayals have become more culturally sensitive with time. To accomplish this, seven animated feature films produced by Disney were analyzed. These analyses are of a qualitative nature, with a focus on imagology and postcolonial literary theory, and the results have simultaneously been compared to corresponding criticism and analyses by other authors and scholars. Based on the overall results of the analyses, it does seem as if Disney is becoming more progressive and culturally sensitive with time. However, while most of the recent films are free from the clearly racist elements found in the company’s earlier productions, it is quite evident that Disney still tends to rely heavily on certain cultural stereotypes.

He majored in film at Emer- son College in Boston, and afterwards moved to Los Angeles where, in 1983, joined Walt Disney and worked in various capacities, including directing Oliver & Company in 1988. He also worked on The Lion King and Dinosaur. Presently he is the animation director for Walt Disney Imagineering. He has been commissioned by the Republic of Panama to paint large scale oil paintings of the up- coming Panama Canal Expansion that would capture both the magnitude of the project as well as the unique culture and stories of the people of Panama. Like the early Impressionists who studied Japanese Prints, the Chinese use one point (vertical) perspec- tive with very interesting shapes to describe landscapes.

George will be speaking about his career with Disney, his painting project for the Autoridad del Canal de Panamá (ACP) and his experiences growing up in Panama. George Scribner George majored in film at Emerson College in Boston, Mass. and in the late ‘70s moved to Los Angeles, Calif. to pursue a career in animation. He was hired by the Walt Disney Company in the early ‘80s as an animator and has been with Disney for the last 32 years. George directed Oliver and Company, a full-length animated feature released in 1988 and The Prince and the Pauper, a 25-minute featurette released in 1991. He also worked as a concept and story artist on several projects including The Lion King, Fantasia Continued, and Dinosaur. George is presently a contractor at Walt Disney Imagineering as a concept artist and Animation Director and is currently directing animation for the newest Disney theme park being built in Shanghai, China. George was commisioned to create large-scale oil paintings documenting the Panama Canal Expansion for the Panama Canal Authority and for the last eight years has completed close to 40 paintings. George is very honored to be a part of this project. The paintings are displayed in the Administration Building in Balboa, Panama. George was born and raised in Panama City, Panama and attended Canal Zone schools.
