The Pharmacological and Therapeutic Importance of Eucalyptus Species Grown in Iraq
IOSR Journal Of Pharmacy www.iosrphr.org (e)-ISSN: 2250-3013, (p)-ISSN: 2319-4219 Volume 7, Issue 3 Version.1 (March 2017), PP. 72-91 The pharmacological and therapeutic importance of Eucalyptus species grown in Iraq Prof Dr Ali Esmail Al-Snafi Department of Pharmacology, College of Medicine, Thi qar University, Iraq Abstract:- Eucalyptus species grown in Iraq were included Eucalyptus bicolor (Syn: Eucalyptus largiflorens), Eucalyptus griffithsii, Eucalyptus camaldulensis (Syn: Eucalyptus rostrata) Eucalyptus incrassate, Eucalyptus torquata and Eucalyptus microtheca (Syn: Eucalyptus coolabahs). Eucalypts contained volatile oils which occurred in many parts of the plant, depending on the species, but in the leaves that oils were most plentiful. The main constituent of the volatile oil derived from fresh leaves of Eucalyptus species was 1,8-cineole. The reported content of 1,8-cineole varies for 54-95%. The most common constituents co-occurring with 1,8- cineole were limonene, α-terpineol, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, globulol and α , β and ϒ-eudesmol, and aromatic constituents. The pharmacological studies revealed that Eucalypts possessed gastrointestinal, antiinflammatory, analgesic, antidiabetic, antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial, antiparasitic, insecticidal, repellent, oral and dental, dermatological, nasal and many other effects. The current review highlights the chemical constituents and pharmacological and therapeutic activities of Eucalyptus species grown in Iraq. It is getting popularized in developing and developed countries owing to its natural origin and lesser side effects. Plants are a valuable source of a wide range of secondary metabolites, which are used as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, flavours, fragrances, colours, biopesticides and food additives [1-50]. -

Th is review is a contribution to Melaleuca knowledge and describes fi ve important essential oil-producing species and two subspecies of Melaleuca in terms of their essential oil chemical composition, medicinal applications, and leaf morphoanatomy. Some relationships between essential oil composition of these species and important biological activities are presented. Useful parameters for the certifi cation of the essential oils are also highlighted. ABSTRACT The biology of Tuart has received little attention. Existing known studies, including work by the authors, are used to look at aspects of Tuart's reproductive biology, phenology, seed bank dynamics and seedling recruitment, as well as the effects of fragmentation and fire on Tuart populations. The studies of Tuart’s reproductive biology and phenology have found that flowering occurs from January to April with reports of mass flowering occurring every five to eight years and patchy flowering occurring intermittently. Seed production and supply in Tuart may show considerable temporal variation. A diverse array of insects and birds are most likely to be involved in pollination of Tuart. Research currently on the seed bank dynamics of Tuart has observed that on average four seeds are stored in each woody fruit for up to two seasons. As a consequence, seed storage in the canopy may be high when heavy flowering seasons occur. Seeds are normally slowly released from the canopy, but can also be released en masse following disturbances such as fire. Tuart seed is susceptible to predation by ants that can remove a large proportion of seed in the soil quickly and hence, Tuart seeds do not form a long-lived soil seed reserve. Seeds have high viability (86%) and no innate dormancy. Mass recruitment of seedlings following fire occurs as the seeds swamp the predators. -

RECOMMENDED LANDSCAPE PLANT LIST LANDSCAPE PLANTS RECOMMENDED FOR THE COPPER COAST REGION Landscaping Policy DEV003 – Attachment 1 PLANTS RECOMMENDED FOR THE COPPER COAST REGION INTRODUCTION This list was compiled by the Copper Coast Council after consultation with a number of plant growers in the Copper Coast region. Organisations consulted included; The Kadina Growing Company Peninsula Nursery Narunga Aboriginal Progress Association Northern Yorke Peninsula Australian Plants Society Factors that were considered when selecting plants for this list included; Suitability to local conditions Sustainability with minimum or no supplementary irrigation Growth characteristics, (plants that are likely to become weeds if they escape into the natural environment have been avoided) Availability It is important to choose the plant that not only possesses the form and function you require, but also suits the conditions that you can provide. The list contains both native and non-native plants. The list is intended to recommend plants that will grow in the Copper Coast region under normal conditions. It is not a complete list of plants that will grow in the region and is not intended to be. The list will be updated on a regular basis as different plants are recommended to Council that meet the required criteria. It is anticipated that the list will be of assistance to developers, landscapers and property owners. A Coastal Garden that displays plants that are suited to front line coastal conditions, second line coastal conditions and the dune environment has been established on the foreshore adjacent to the corner of Riley Road and The Esplanade, North Beach Township. The garden is a living demonstration of plants suited for gardens in a coastal environment.
