By EurekAlert! Australia's giant eucalyptus trees are the tallest flowering plants on earth, yet their unique relationship with fire makes them a puzzle for ecologists. Now the first global assessment of these giants, published in New Phytologist, seeks to end a century of debate over the species' classification and may change the way it is managed in future. Gigantic trees are rare. Of the 100,000 global tree species only 50, less than 0.005 per cent, reach over 70 metres in height. While many of the giants live in Pacific North America, Borneo and similar habitats, 13 are eucalypts endemic to Southern and Eastern Australia. The tallest flowering plant in Australia is Eucalyptus regnans, with temperate eastern Victoria and Tasmania being home to the six tallest recorded species of the genus. -

Abstract: Melaleuca cajuputi essential oil (MCEO) from Pulau Buru (PBR), Indonesia, has been used as a functional flavor on Cajuputs Candy for years. Our recent study has explored thirteen other alternative MCEO sources to be developed as food flavor. However, not all of the MCEO had similarities to PBR MCEO both in their sensory and volatile profiles. This study aimed to identify the aroma-active compounds which would affect the overall aroma perception of the most- and the least-liked MCEO as a flavor ingredient based on the nasal impact frequency (NIF) method. Initial screening was performed to evaluate the overall liking of thirteen MCEO on Cajuputs Candy through a hedonic test, conducted by seventy-eight untrained panelists. The sample obtained from Mojokerto (MOJ) was the most-liked alternatives MCEO in a similar degree of liking to the currently used PBR, while Belu (BEL) was the least-liked. -

Hence, it is important to understand the tolerance of Australian native plants to high concentrations of Zn. Very little is known about the responses of Australian native plants, and trees in particular, to toxic concentra- tions of Zn. Acacia holosericea, Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Melaleuca leucadendra plants were grown in dilute solution culture for 10 weeks. The seedlings (42 days old) were exposed to six Zn treatments viz., 0.5, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 µM. The order of tolerance to toxic concentrations of Zn was E. camaldulensis> A. holosericea> M. leucadendra, the critical external concentrations being approximately 20, 12 and 1.5 µM, respectively. Tissue Zn concentrations increased as solution Zn increased for all species. Root tissue concentrations were higher than shoot tissue concentrations at all solution Zn concentrations. The critical tissue Zn concentrations were approximately 85 and 110 µgg−1 DM for M. -

The term crosier is explained and there is a note on Bedfordia, a very large species in the Asteraceae. COST COMPARISON OF Melaleuca Treatment Methods by Francois B. Laroche and Jennifer McKim Introduction Melaleuca (Melaleuca quinquenervia) is an exotic invasive plant species that was introduced to South Florida in the late 19th century Melaleuca seeds were offered for sale in Florida in 1887 (Serbesoff-King, 2003), and the tree has been distributed throughout South Florida since that time. Around 1937, during the historic rush to drain swamps in the state of Florida, seeds from the native Australian tree were disbursed over the eastern portion of South Florida’s Everglades. The tree was believed to be beneficial for drying wetlands for farming and development. In 1941, the United States Army Corps of Engineers planted M. quinquenervia on levees south of Lake Okeechobee for erosion control (Bramlage, 2000). Melaleuca was widely planted, and recommended as late as 1970, as “one of Florida’s best landscape trees” (Watkins, 1970). Melaleuca grows extremely fast in a variety of conditions. Wetlands, seasonal wetlands, and well- drained uplands offer excellent growing conditions for the tree. Melaleuca is particularly a concern for South Florida because it is highly invasive and has the ability to adapt and flourish in a variety of ecological conditions. The high production of viable seeds helps this species to establish and disperse and makes control a difficult challenge. Regardless of the method of removal, millions of viable seeds are left behind to re-establish melaleuca populations following any control initiatives. Current methods of control used for melaleuca include integrated strategies of herbicide application, limited mechanical means, and biological controls (Laroche, 1998). Control with herbicides is the most economical and most researched method. -

IOSR Journal Of Pharmacy www.iosrphr.org (e)-ISSN: 2250-3013, (p)-ISSN: 2319-4219 Volume 7, Issue 3 Version.1 (March 2017), PP. 72-91 The pharmacological and therapeutic importance of Eucalyptus species grown in Iraq Prof Dr Ali Esmail Al-Snafi Department of Pharmacology, College of Medicine, Thi qar University, Iraq Abstract:- Eucalyptus species grown in Iraq were included Eucalyptus bicolor (Syn: Eucalyptus largiflorens), Eucalyptus griffithsii, Eucalyptus camaldulensis (Syn: Eucalyptus rostrata) Eucalyptus incrassate, Eucalyptus torquata and Eucalyptus microtheca (Syn: Eucalyptus coolabahs). Eucalypts contained volatile oils which occurred in many parts of the plant, depending on the species, but in the leaves that oils were most plentiful. The main constituent of the volatile oil derived from fresh leaves of Eucalyptus species was 1,8-cineole. The reported content of 1,8-cineole varies for 54-95%. The most common constituents co-occurring with 1,8- cineole were limonene, α-terpineol, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, globulol and α , β and ϒ-eudesmol, and aromatic constituents. The pharmacological studies revealed that Eucalypts possessed gastrointestinal, antiinflammatory, analgesic, antidiabetic, antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial, antiparasitic, insecticidal, repellent, oral and dental, dermatological, nasal and many other effects. The current review highlights the chemical constituents and pharmacological and therapeutic activities of Eucalyptus species grown in Iraq.
