To evaluate dynamics of elephant herbivory, we assessed seasonal preferences for woody plants by African elephant breeding herds in the southeastern part of Kruger National Park (KNP) between 2002 and 2005. Breeding herds had access to a variety of woody plants, and, of the 98 woody plant species that were recorded in the elephant’s feeding areas, 63 species were utilized by observed animals. Data were recorded at 948 circular feeding sites (radius 5 m) during wet and dry seasons. Seasonal preference was measured by comparing selection of woody species in proportion to their estimated availability and then ranked according to the Manly alpha () index of preference. -

We suggest that a precise comparison of the hunting behavior of a species closely related to man might help us understand which aspects of hunting could be affected by environmental conditions. The hunting behavior of wild chimpanzees is discussed, and new observations on a population living in the tropical rain forest of the TaY National Park, Ivory Coast, are presented. Some of the forest chimpanzees’ hunting performances are similar to those of savanna-woodlands populations; others are different. Forest chimpanzees have a more specialized prey image, intentionally search for more adult prey, and hunt in larger groups and with a more elaborate cooperative level than sa- vanna-woodlands chimpanzees. In addition, forest chimpanzees tend to share meat more actively and more frequently. These findings are related to some theories on aspects of hunting behavior in early hominids and discussed in order to understand some factors influencing the hunting behavior of wild chimpanzees. Angola’s fauna was severely decimated during the long-lasting civil war following the country’s independence. During a round trip from Lubango (Huíla province), pass- ing through the provinces of Benguela, Cuanza sul, Luanda, Bengo and finally to Uíge, we documented a variety of bushmeat trade, mainly along the roadside. -

Es podria pensar que és un universal en la comunicació. Davant de situacions de disconfort o en contextos anagonístics, la freqüència d’emissió s’eleva. A més tensió articulatòria, augmenta el to cap a l’agut. La intensitat és un recurs que augmenta la capacitat d’impressionar l’atenció del que escolta. A la natura trobem diferents exemplificacions d’aquest fet, fins i tot en espècies molt allunyades filogenèticament com el gos o l’abellot que en emetre el zum-zum, si se sent amenaçat, eleva la freqüència d’emissió. En les vocalitzacions de les diferents espècies de primats hi ha trets acústics homòlegs, que s’emeten en similars circumstàncies socials. Els senyals d’amenaça acostumen a ser de to baix en els primats i, en canvi, els anagonístics estridents i molt aguts; alguns senyals d’alarma tenen patrons comuns en els dibuixos espectrogràfics i, fins i tot, altres espècies diferents a l’espècie emissora en reconeixen el significat. Podríem deduir una funció comunicativa derivada de l’estructura acústica. En crides de cohesió, les de reclam d’atenció o amistoses, l’estructura acústica és tonal; quan informa d’una ubicació, tenen diferents bandes de freqüència; les agressives i d’alarma tenen denses bandes freqüencials; i les agonístiques o més emotives – que expressen un elevat estat emocional (‘desesperat’)- són noisy o molt compactes. -

TASK ORDER NUMBER FMD-C339 Dear Ms. Cruz: This letter report summarizes the findings of the focused plant survey conducted for the Soft-Bottom Channel (SBC) Reach 116, Los Cerritos Channel, for the Los Angeles County Flood Control District (LACFCD) to support the Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) Waste Discharge Requirements (WDR) for the proposed actions relating to the Los Cerritos Channel SBC Reach Annual Maintenance Project (Project). Information contained in this document is in accordance with accepted scientific and technical standards that are consistent with the requirements of United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). The Project reach is surrounded mainly by residential, commercial, and industrial development. The Project is located at the western terminus of the CA-22 freeway, and extends from Atherton Street to Pacific Coast Highway, in the City of Long Beach. The proposed impact area includes: . The expanse from the top of the riprap on one bank, across the channel, to the top of the riprap on the other bank .
