LOCAL TENNIS PREP GIRLS GOLF SHS’ Hagerty Milestone moment signs with USC Sumter BY DENNIS BRUNSON [email protected]

Gillian Hagerty is far from a golf lifer. In fact, she has only been playing the sport for four years. “My father (Shawn) had al- ways been an avid player,” Hagerty said. “He told me why didn’t I try it, so I did and I started getting good at it.” After two years of playing on her own, Hagerty played on the Sumter High HAGERTY School golf team her junior and se- nior years. Now she will get the opportunity to play at the junior college level. Hagerty recently signed to play with the University of South Carolina Sumter. She will be part of the first Fire Ants women’s golf team. Hagerty said it wasn’t too hard to make a decision to give golf at USC Sumter a try after head coach Hope Giordano paid a visit to her. “She actually came to the high school and asked me per- sonally,” Hagerty said of Gior- dano. “With my love of golf, I wanted to see how far I could carry it. So when she offered, I accepted.” Hagerty knows her game is still a work in progress, but she made great strides in her two seasons on the SHS team.
