Abstract Three new species of the bopyrid genus Scyracepon Tattersall, 1905 are described from crabs collected on Pacific Islands: Scyracepon polynesiensis n. sp. from the Society Islands, S. pseudoliomerae n. sp. from the Mariana Islands, and S. biglobosus n. sp. from the Line Islands. The first two were found infesting Xanthias lamarckii and Pseudoliomera sp. (Xanthidae), a new host family for species of Scyracepon, and the last was found parasitizing Schizophrys aspera (Majidae). Scyracepon now includes 11 species, all but one known from single collections, infesting 12 host species in 9 brachyuran families. The discovery of three new species, each rare, suggests that crab parasites are undersampled, and further suggests that the low relative diversity of bopyrids known from brachyurans may partly reflect this undersampling. -

The natural reserve “Saline di Trapani e Paceco” is an interesting natural area in Sicily, formed by the remaining strips of land among salt pans near the coastline. From January 2008 to January 2010, pitfall trapping was conducted in five sampling sites inside the study area. The community of terrestrial isopods was assessed using the main diversity indices. Twenty-four species were collected, only one of them endemic to west- ern Sicily: Porcellio siculoccidentalis Viglianisi, Lombardo & Caruso, 1992. Two species are new to Sicily: Armadilloniscus candidus Budde-Lund, 1885 and Armadilloniscus ellipticus (Harger, 1878). -

Abstract South America is diverse in climatic and thus vegetational zonation, and even the uniformly looking tropical rain forests are a mosaic of different habitats depending on the soils, the regional climate and also the geological history. An important part of the nutrient webs of the rain forests is formed by the terrestrial Isopoda, or Oniscidea, the only truly terrestrial taxon within the Crustacea. They are important, because they participate in soil formation by breaking up leaf litter when foraging on the fungi and bacteria growing on them. After a century of research on this interesting taxon, a revision of the terrestrial isopod taxa from South America and some of the Antillean Islands, which are traditionally placed in the family Philosciidae, was performed in the last years to establish monophyletic genera. Within this study, the phylogenetic relationships of these genera are elucidated in the light of phylogenetic systematics. Several new taxa are recognized, which are partially neotropical, partially also found on other continents, particularly the old Gondwanian fragments. The monophyla are checked for their distributional patterns which are compared with those patterns from other taxa from South America and some correspondence was found. The distributional patterns are analysed with respect to the evolution of the Oniscidea and also with respect to the geological history of their habitats. -

At the low phase of electroretinogram (ERG) amplitude (at noon), the arrangement of microvilli is ordered and the rhabdom is of the open type. An irregular arrangement of microvilli appears at the high phase of ERG amplitude (at midnight), when the rhabdom is of the closed type. The pigment granules disperse at midnight and assemble at noon. A centrally positioned, spike- producing eccentric cell is present in each ommatidium. Spectral response curves based on ERG measurements have two maxima, one to light of 383 nm wavelength, the other at around 520 nm. These two peaks represent the two classes of receptor cells identified by intracellular recordings. The ERG responses to light of 383 nm and 520 nm wavelengths display a diurnal rhythmicity, being high at night and low during the day. However, the responses to green light are more strongly affected than those to ultraviolet light. Consequently, the eye displays a relatively higher ultraviolet-sensitivity during the day, whereas at night sensitivity to green light is increased. -

Faunistic Survey of Terrestrial Isopods (Isopoda: Oniscidea) in the Boč Massif Area

In 2005, terrestrial isopods were sampled in the Boč Massif area, eastern Slovenia, and their fauna compared at five different sampling sites: forest on dolomite, forest on limestone, thermophilous forest, young stage forest and extensive meadow. Two sampling methods were used: hand collecting and quadrate soil sampling with a subsequent heat extraction of animals. The highest species diversity (8 species) was recorded in the forest on dolomite and in young stage forest. No isopod species were found in samples from the extensive meadow. In the entire study area we recorded 12 different terrestrial isopod species and caught 109 specimens in total. The research brought new data on the distribution of two quite poorly known species in Slovenia: the Trachelipus razzauti and Haplophthalmus abbreviatus. Favnistični pregled mokric (Isopoda: Oniscidea) na območju Boškega masiva – Leta 2005 smo na območju Boškega masiva v vzhodni Sloveniji opravili vzorčenje favne mokric. V raziskavi smo primerjali favno mokric na petih različnih vzorčnih mestih: v gozdu na dolomitu, v gozdu na apnencu, termofilnem gozdu, mladem gozdu in na ekstenzivnem travniku. Vzorčili smo z dvema metodama, in sicer z metodo ročnega pobiranja ter z odvzemom talnih vzorcev po metodi kvadratov. -

ITE contributes to, and draws upon, the collective knowledge of the 13 sister institutes which make up the Natural Environment Research Council, spanning all the environmental sciences. This study uses variation at 12 allozyme loci, phylogenetic analyses of 600 bp of a COI (cyto- chrome c oxidase subunit I) mtDNA fragment and morphometric comparisons to determine whether 15 populations are conspeciWc, and, if not, to elucidate their evolutionary relationships. Molecular evidence suggested that the most easterly population, collected from the Tsitsikamma Forest, was representative of a yet undescribed species. Patterns of diVerentiation and evolutionary relation- ships among the remaining populations were unrelated to geographic proximity or drainage system. Patterns of isolation by distance were also absent. An apparent disparity among the extent of genetic diVerentiation was also revealed by the two molecular marker sets. Mitochondrial sequence divergences among individuals were comparable to currently recognized intraspeciWc divergences. Sur- prisingly, nuclear markers revealed more extensive diVerentiation, more characteristic of interspeciWc divergences. -

Keywords: Organic carbon, Chiridotea caeca, Pascichnia, Intertidal, Neoichnology, Bioturbation 1 ABSTRACT Grazing trackways of the Valviferan isopod Chiridotea caeca are examined to establish relationships between trackway complexity and morphology, and the distribution of food (organic carbon). These isopods burrow up to 1 cm beneath the surface within ripple troughs and plane-bedded sand of the upper intertidal zone. The burrows are grouped into three forms based on trackway complexity and the degree of looping and trackway crossover in planview. Sediment samples taken directly from the furrows of the trails are used to establish the total organic-carbon content associated with each type of burrow morphology. There is an increase in organic-carbon content from burrows of low complexity (linear), to burrows of high complexity (convolute with many crossovers), suggesting that benthic food content directly influences the behavior of C. caeca, which is manifest in the trackway morphology. Detailed study of trackway architecture further reveals a relationship between C. caeca and food content leading to the recognition of three grazing styles, which are directly associated with the plan-view morphology of the trackway. -

Ozier9, and Alan Cressler10 Abstract We provide an annotated checklist of species recorded from caves and other subterranean habitats in the state of Georgia, USA. We report 281 species (228 invertebrates and 53 vertebrates), including 51 troglobionts (cave-obligate species), from more than 150 sites (caves, springs, and wells). Endemism is high; of the troglobionts, 17 (33 % of those known from the state) are endemic to Georgia and seven (14 %) are known from a single cave. We identified three biogeographic clusters of troglobionts. Two clusters are located in the northwestern part of the state, west of Lookout Mountain in Lookout Valley and east of Lookout Mountain in the Valley and Ridge. In addition, there is a group of tro- globionts found only in the southwestern corner of the state and associated with the Upper Floridan Aquifer. At least two dozen potentially undescribed species have been collected from caves; clarifying the taxonomic status of these organisms would improve our understanding of cave biodiversity in the state.
