Memetic Proliferation and Fan Participation in the Simpsons
THE UNIVERSITY OF HULL Craptacular Science and the Worst Audience Ever: Memetic Proliferation and Fan Participation in The Simpsons being a Thesis submitted for the Degree of PhD Film Studies in the University of Hull by Jemma Diane Gilboy, BFA, BA (Hons) (University of Regina), MScRes (University of Edinburgh) April 2016 Craptacular Science and the Worst Audience Ever: Memetic Proliferation and Fan Participation in The Simpsons by Jemma D. Gilboy University of Hull 201108684 Abstract (Thesis Summary) The objective of this thesis is to establish meme theory as an analytical paradigm within the fields of screen and fan studies. Meme theory is an emerging framework founded upon the broad concept of a “meme”, a unit of culture that, if successful, proliferates among a given group of people. Created as a cultural analogue to genetics, memetics has developed into a cultural theory and, as the concept of memes is increasingly applied to online behaviours and activities, its relevance to the area of media studies materialises. The landscapes of media production and spectatorship are in constant fluctuation in response to rapid technological progress. The internet provides global citizens with unprecedented access to media texts (and their producers), information, and other individuals and collectives who share similar knowledge and interests. The unprecedented speed with (and extent to) which information and media content spread among individuals and communities warrants the consideration of a modern analytical paradigm that can accommodate and keep up with developments. Meme theory fills this gap as it is compatible with existing frameworks and offers researchers a new perspective on the factors driving the popularity and spread (or lack of popular engagement with) a given media text and its audience. -

The Simpsons' Waylon Smithers
The Simpsons’ Waylon Smithers Introducing the Character Waylon Smithers Jr. is an animated character and one of the “regular” cast members of the long-running Fox network’s cartoon for adults The Simpsons. The show, which recently entered its fourth decade, is a comedy and parody that takes a satirical look at American society and Western cultural values. Waylon Smithers Jr. is the personal assistant to Mr. Montgomery Burns, the chief executive officer (CEO) of the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant. Cast as Mr. Burns’s selfless, self-effacing, and dedicated assistant, Smithers, as he is referred to on the show, is a gay man who has not let his sexual identity become known to others on the show. He secretly fantasizes about sexual trysts with his boss and even has a pop-up screen saver on his computer that contains a naked image of Mr. Burns that says “Hello Smithers, you’re quite good at turning me on.” Smithers is often the butt of jokes by others at the power plant, most notoriously Homer Simpson, who has long suspected Smithers of being gay. Smithers continually ingratiates himself to Mr. Burns—a deeply narcissistic and sadistic employer and person who may at some level know of Smithers’s interest in him and who takes advantage of him at all turns. The following basic case summary and diagnostic impressions present our portrayal of Smithers’s recent counseling session as a result of troubles at work. Basic Case Summary Identifying Information. Waylon Smithers Jr. is a 48-year-old European American male of Norwegian descent who has been working as an executive assistant at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant for the last 20 years. -

The Simpsons Tapped out - Analysis and Proposed Events Overview
The Simpsons Tapped Out - Analysis and Proposed Events Overview Players like myself have faithfully enjoyed The Simpsons Tapped Out (TSTO) for several years. The developers have continued to expand the game and provide updates in response to player feedback. This has been evident in tools such as the IRS Building tap radius, the Introduction Unemployment Office Job Manager and the Cut & Paste feature, all of which are greatly appreciated by players and have extended the playability of TSTO for many of us who would have otherwise found the game too tedious to continue once their Springfields grew so large. Notably, as respects Events, positive reactive efforts were identifiable in the 2017 Winter Event and the modified use of craft currency. As evident from the forums, many dedicated and heavily-invested players have grown tired with some of TSTO's stale mechanics and gameplay, as well as the proliferation of uninspired content, much of which has little to no place in Springfield, if even the world of "The Simpsons." This Premise player attitude is often displayed in the later stages of major Events as players begin to sense monotony due to a lack in changes throughout an Event, resulting in a feeling that one is merely grinding through the game to stock up on largely unwanted Items. Content-driven major Events geared toward "The Simpsons" version of Springfield with changes of pace, more like mini-Events, and the Solution addition of new Effects, enabling a variety of looks while injecting a new degree of both familiarity and customization for players. The proposed Events and gameplay changes are steeped in canonical content rather than original content. -

Project Assessment
Emily Frey I chose to study The Simpsons and the way it addresses sexuality and sexual identity, other than just heterosexuality. When I was watching my seasons to annotate them, I happened to watch a few of the episodes I focused on in my timeline, which highlighted LGBTQ+ themes. The first one I saw was “Homer’s Phobia,” which is very clearly an attack against homophobia, and works to make a statement about the show feels about debates of homosexuality. I then had to watch some later seasons of the show, where I watched “Three Gays of the Condo.” That episode focuses a lot on LGBTQ+ themes, but it addressed it in a different way, I thought. Homer moves into Springfield’s gay neighborhood, and moves in with a gay couple, but the show doesn’t take any sort of stance on LGBTQ+ rights like “Homer’s Phobia,” did, instead just used the setting and characters as further jokes. Based on how differently the show treated both episodes, I wanted to see if the show’s approach to these issues morphed and changed over time. I also was intrigued by Smithers as a character, in part just because he was one of my favorite residents of Springfield, but also because of how many references are made to his sexuality without ever coming out. My biggest question in my research was whether The Simpsons changed it’s views on LGBTQ+ issues over time (because it has been on the air for so long), and whether that has been influenced by the ongoing presence of various movements towards LGBTQ+ rights. -
LGBTQ Episodic Television Study Guide
Archive Study Guide: LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER TELEVISION: SITCOMS AND EPISODIC DRAMAS ARCHIVE STUDY GUIDE The representation of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) communities on television is marked by a history of stereotypes and inexplicable invisibility. By the 1970s, gay media-watch groups communicated their concerns to the television industry and a sense of cooperation began to emerge between the LG BT community and broadcasters. During the 1980s, the AIDS crisis and resulting prejudices ushered in a new era of problematic and offensive portrayals. In the late 1990s, Ellen Degeneres' landmark coming out, (both in real- life, and through the character she portrayed in her sitcom), generated much controversy and discussion, ultimately paving the way for well -developed gay characters in prominent primetime TV roles. Despite such advances, stereotypes continue to resurface and perpetuate, and the full diversity of the LGBT community is more often than not underrepresented in the mass media. This is only a partial list – consult the Archive Research and Study Center for additional titles, including relevant materials held in the Outfest Legacy Collection.
