October 2016 Dear Shire-mates, This past month has been difficult on us for a multitude of reasons. We have seen tragedy and endured loss. We’ve seen fear of the greatest propor- tions and responded with triumph. We’ve also seen hope, perseverance, and the loving hand that SCAdians hold for each other. We are a family created by choice as much as by interest. We hold hands with each other and keep vigil over Ean MacRaith, affectionately known as Da, as he recuperates. He’s making progressive leaps, which has elated us all! Our hearts are, and have been with, Kilian and Ronja as they’ve spent countless nights at Da’s bedside. We keep our hands ready for the moment they ask for said hands to work. We also mourn the loss of Zula, our sweet, wild companion, who was taken from us far too soon. Amaris’s grief is our own as Zula is commemorated, a piece of our zany Zula forever fixed in our hearts. She won’t be forgotten. Through all the heartache that we have suffered, we have endured this pain together. We comfort each other with hugs. We meet each other again and again with words of love. It’s what keeps us going through the pain that has settled in our hearts. We know this sort of heartache will never leave us, but we still endure for each other. We have seen how much family truly stands for each other in times of dire crisis and loss. Thank you, to all of you, for being family as much as friends. Thank you for being a shoulder to bear the pain, for having open arms ready to embrace that pain and share it. For stand- ing for each other through thick and thin, no matter what the situation may be. I am proud to be part of the Incipient Shire of Graywood. • Honored Values and Valued Objects: the Society for Creative Anachronism
AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION OF Althea L. Turner for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Design and Human Environment presented on April 28, 2010. Title: Honored Values and Valued Objects: The Society for Creative Anachronism Abstract approved: Elaine L. Pedersen In this dissertation, I posited the need to understand how an invented community (the Society for Creative Anachronism) constructs symbolic meaning in material objects and value systems. Using ethnographic methods, I focused on the Knights and their regalia as this is the most widely accepted material symbolism. People go to the SCA to find the communitas offered by a fantastical performed history. They create the material culture in order to enhance the atmosphere they seek in their mediated performance of history. This material culture then gains value, as it becomes imbued with the emotional contexts provided by the performance and embodied history. As American culture becomes increasingly fragmented, with place- bound community becoming a thing of the past, it is important to understand how humans adapt. One method of adaptive behavior is the construction of communities around beliefs, hobbies, products, or vocations. The SCA is one such example. © Copyright by Althea L. Greywinds – As we move into spring weather, we rejoice for the warmth and bloom that com- bats with the dismal rain that has threatened to drown our spirits for countless months. We come alive again as we eagerly embrace the sun. Just as we come alive, I hope to bring our newsletter alive with the different blooms of our incipient shire. From our ever-ready fighters to the nimble handed sewers, from the artistic touches to the rough and newly fashioned. We are ALIVE, my fellow shire mates. My endeavor with this newsletter is to show it, and I hope I do our shire honor in with each month. There is so much uniqueness in our merry group that begs to be touched on. There are so many stories within our folds that yearn to be shared. Just like our veter- ans with their amusing tales, I want to bring Graywood’s story to life to share with fu- ture generations. We have already seen a growth. The new faces are a delight, because they bring a story untold and will add to our own ever-growing ballad. This is our beginning Spring, Graywood. We have only begun to spread our limbs. I’m eager, as I’m sure all of you are, to see how we will grow over time. What new tales will be embarked on? Whose new persona have we helped to build or bud? Pun definitely intended. What new song will be formed from that story and added to our growing plethora of ballads? Our future is unwritten, yes, but we will have quite the time in writing it.
