Извод, ИЗ: Циљ ове докторске дисертације је испитивање применљивости секундарних метаболита одабраних представника рода Sedum L. (Crassulaceae) са територије централног Балканског полуострва у хемотаксономске сврхе. Укључени су и представници из других родова исте фамилије: Crassula L., Hylotelephum H. Ohba, Echeveria DC. i Kalanchoe Adans. GC-MS и GC-FID техником је праћена дистрибуцијa n- алкана (C20-C35) и тритерпена (олеани, лупани и тараксерани) у хексанским екстрактима, а код метанолних екстраката дистрибуција поларних компоненти (HPLC анализа). Садржаји поменутих компоненти су коришћени као променљиве које су једнообразно систематизоване у матрице за статистичке анализе: дескриптивна статистика, униваријантне и мултиваријантне методе. Дистрибуција наведених хемијских карактера је разматрана на нивоу серије као таксономске категорије. Различит садржај поменутих карактера је условио класификовање испитиваних таксона које је коментарисано и упоређивано у складу са већ постојећим системима класификације. (Crassulaceae), collected from the Central Balkan Peninsula. The study also included compatriots from the related genera (same family): Crassula L., Hylotelephum H. Ohba, Echeveria DC. and Kalanchoe Adans. Distribution of n-alkanes (C20-C35) and tirterpenes (olenanae, lupane and taraxerane) were monitored in hexane extracts by GC-MS and GC-FID techniques, while polar components, from methanol extracts, were monitored by HPLC technique. The contents of mentioned components were inputted uniformly in matrices (pattern) further used in statistical analyses: descriptive, univariate and multivariate methods. Distribution of characters was considered on the series level as a taxonomic rank. Different contents contributed to certain classification of examined taxa which was discussed with respect to already established systems of classification related to genus. Zlatković Eksperimentalni deo doktorske disertacije je rađen u laboratoriji za Organsku hemiju, na Departmanu za hemiju (Prirodno-matematički fakultet, Univerzitet u Nišu), u okviru projekta Ministarstva prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja "Prirodni proizvodi biljaka i lišajeva: izolovanje, identifikacija, biološka aktivnost i primena", evidencioni broj 172047. Disertacija je urađena pod mentorstvom red. prof. dr Gordane Stojanović i vanr. prof. dr Bojana Zlatkovića. Na ovaj način im se srdačno i najiskrenije zahvaljujem, jer su me nesebično i strpljivo vodili kroz izradu disertacije. Prenoseći mi svoja iskustva, ispunjena entuzijazmom i ljubavlju prema nauci, učili su me pragmatičnosti i metodičnosti u radu. Zahvaljujem im se jer su mi ukazali poverenje i pružili podršku. Box 5000 Antigonish, Nova Scotia B2G 2W5 Distributions of over 50 species of flowering plants from Antigonish County, Nova Scotia are presented based on collections made primarily over the last ten years. Some of these are new county records representing range extensions from the western and central parts of the province. Many are new records for the eastern mainland and north shores of the province. Rare species discussed are Asclepias incarnata, Comandra umbellata and Triosteum aurantiacum. Several species, including Asparagus officinalis, Centaurea cyanus, Lathyrus latifolius, Lysimachia nummularia, and Origanum vulgare, likely represent recent or older garden escapes. Sedum ochroleucum is reported outside of cultivation for the first time from Nova Scotia, based on a single population that has been established for at least two years.     Bright Spots A SELF GUIDED WALKING TOUR September 13, 2017 Did you know…? Usually when we think of azaleas we think of Spring, but there are some beauties abloom in the garden right now. These are reblooming azaleas. They have already produced Spring flowers for Virginia’s Garden Week, and now they are contributing to Fall color. Many of these plants are patented under the name Encore® azalea. They first became available in the late 1990s, the work of Robert E. “Buddy” Lee, a plant breeder and nurseryman from Louisiana. This group derives from a cross between spring blooming azaleas and Rhododendron oldhamii “Fourth of July”. The garden’s Plant Explorer database lists 22 varieties of Encore® azaleas. Many have the word “Autumn” in their cultivar name. Several are in bloom now, including ‘Autumn Royalty’ and ‘Autumn Sundance’ listed below. Not much published material is available on these rebloomers, but the article by Will Ferrell (not the actor) in The Azalean (below) is a knowledgeable evaluation of the merits of many specific cultivars. Besides the Encore® series there are at least two other patented reblooming lines: ReBLOOM™ Azaleas by breeder Bob Head and Bloom-a-thon from Monrovia. To sow confusion, I must note that the Azalea ‘August to Frost’ with its bright white blossoms (along the Flagler walk) is not considered a rebloomer. It was hybridized by M. B. Matlack in 1940, possibly a cross between R. mucronatum var. mucronatum and an unknown species.     The Burren 2018 species list and trip report, 7th-12th June 2018 WILDLIFE TRAVEL The Burren 2018 s 1 The Burren 2018 species list and trip report, 7th-12th June 2018 Day 1: 7th June: Arrive in Lisdoonvarna; supper at Rathbaun Hotel Arriving by a variety of routes and means, we all gathered at Caherleigh House by 6pm, sustained by a round of fresh tea, coffee and delightful home-made scones from our ever-helpful host, Dermot. After introductions and some background to the geology and floral elements in the Burren from Brian (stressing the Mediterranean component of the flora after a day’s Mediterranean heat and sun), we made our way to the Rathbaun, for some substantial and tasty local food and our first taste of Irish music from the three young ladies of Ceolan, and their energetic four-hour performance (not sure any of us had the stamina to stay to the end). Day 2: 8th June: Poulsallach At 9am we were collected by Tony, our driver from Glynn’s Coaches for the week, and following a half-hour drive we arrived at a coastal stretch of species-rich limestone pavement which represented the perfect introduction to the Burren’s flora: a stunningly beautiful mix of coastal, Mediterranean, Atlantic and Arctic-Alpine species gathered together uniquely in a natural rock garden. First impressions were of patchy grassland, sparkling with heath spotted- orchids Dactylorhiza maculata ericetorum and drifts of the ubiquitous and glowing-purple bloody crane’s-bill Geranium sanguineum, between bare rock. A closer look revealed a diverse and colourful tapestry of dozens of flowers - the yellows of goldenrod Solidago virgaurea, kidney-vetch Anthyllis vulneraria, and bird’s-foot trefoil Lotus corniculatus (and its attendant common blue butterflies Polyommatus Icarus), pink splashes of wild thyme Thymus polytrichus and the hairy local subspecies of lousewort Pedicularis sylvatica ssp.

Natalia Hurtado Castano ii Abstract Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) is a specialised type of photosynthesis characterised by the unique inverted stomatal rhythm, which increases water use efficiency (WUE) and enhances the potential for sustainable biomass production in warmer and drier conditions. Starch turnover in the mesophyll of CAM species supports nocturnal CO2 assimilation and CAM activity. In C3 plants, starch metabolism has been reported to play an important role in determining stomatal behaviour; in this case, guard cell starch degradation is triggered by blue light, producing osmolytes that promotes stomatal opening. Based on the importance of starch and the little knowledge regarding CAM stomatal behaviour, this study tested the hypothesis that starch metabolism has been re-programmed in CAM plants to enable nocturnal stomatal opening, by using biochemical and genetic characterisation of wild type and RNAi lines with curtailed starch metabolism in the constitutive CAM species Kalanchoë fedtschenkoi. Woody’s presentations are a favorite of the club; this year, he will be sharing with us new, rare, and seldom seen cacti and succulents of Mexico. Sedum robertsianum Hausteca Canyon, home of Agave albopilosa Echeveria lilacina ABOUT OUR SPEAKER Woody, as he is commonly known, has been in the cactus hobby for some 47 years and has become well known for his participation and contributions. He has been awarded honorary life membership to ten clubs, as well as, a life member and Friend award with the CSSA (Cactus & Succulent Society of America.) His many leadership roles include: National Show Chairman, Convention Sales Chairman, Convention Speaker coordinator, 2016 Mid-States Conference Co-chair, accredited C & S judge and writer -photographer. He has also served in almost all positions of leadership for many regional clubs and is currently the president of the new Santa Fe C & S club. Woody is probably best recognized for his many presentations. His photography is considered to be special and his commentary very entertaining and educational. After all, he was a celebrated secondary school teacher for 32 years, where he taught Art, Graphic Arts-Design and Architecture. He has now become a recognized international speaker and has presented at cactus and succulent events all over the world. His involvement in the cactus and succulent world is well represented by his 45 years of field work in regions including: Africa, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Madagascar, Mexico, Namibia, New Zealand, Peru, Socotra, the United States and Yemen.
