As the country emerges from our “battle” with Covid 19, I am looking forward to enjoying this summer and really appreciating the wildlife in our local area. Whilst it will be great to have all restrictions removed, I hope that we do not lose the increased community spirit and politeness that developed during the lockdowns. Our first summer field outings have started and have proved very popular. Indeed, the limited space available on each walk, combined with the heavy demand from members, has meant that the field outing organiser’s husband has had to miss out! However, I am hopeful that I can attend the next outing, when numbers will not be limited. Alongside the summer field outings, we will also be carrying out our annual surveys of the ecological succession at Medmerry. I would like to take this opportunity to remind members that we have three pieces of equipment available for members to borrow. We have two types of Bat detector available, a static one and a handheld device. If you would like to book a slot to borrow either of these please contact Linda Smith. Following on from last year, I will be carrying out some bat surveys around the NT North Wood, using the handheld detector. If you would like to accompany me, please drop me a line. -

See Principles on main webpage. Hills, woodland, views, villages, pubs In Brief This is an unforgettable circular walk between two quiet downland villages. In between them is the escarpment of the South Downs, steep in the north and sloping gently down on the south side. There is a moderate climb at the start but, after that, the gradients are not too taxing. The terrain is mainly woodland but on the way you will be surprised by sudden views. There is an excellent friendly village pub, with good food, in each village. Note that the Unicorn in Heyshott is closed on Monday (for info ring 01730- 813486). The Star and Garter in East Dean has re-opened (as Apr 2019). It's always advisable to check (t heir number is 01243-811318). There are one or two short sections along this walk with nettles or scratchy undergrowth – enough to make shorts uncomfortable. The ground under- foot is generally firm and dry, although possibly in wet conditions the path back to Heyshott at the end might have some muddy patches. -

CHAPTER 11: RECREATION AND LEISURE INTRODUCTION 11.1 Recreation and leisure are important for the quality of life of both individuals and the community as a whole. They can help promote healthy lifestyles, a sense of place, civic pride and community spirit and the enjoyment of culture and art. At the same time, they can raise the perception of the town by non-residents. This chapter aims to promote and encourage the provision of recreation facilities in the best manner possible so that they are readily accessible to all groups within the community. MAIN CHARACTERISTICS 11.2 Partly as a result of its development as a New Town, Crawley has had recreation facilities provided to a high standard. These include two sports centres, a modern theatre and exhibition facilities, health clubs, an athletics stadium, a series of sports fields, golf courses and a driving range, and extensive public open spaces and amenity areas with footpaths and bridleways. However, the borough's population is now about 90,000 and could be between 100,000 - 105,000 by the end of the plan period - nearly twice the size of that originally planned for the New Town. Compared with many areas the population remains comparatively young and active. This population is also ethnically and demographically more diverse than at the New Town's inception. As a result, the number of people using recreation facilities has increased and the range of demand broadened, for e.g., spectator sports, informal, non-competitive and healthy activities are now being pursued. 11.3 The built-up area is now much larger than originally planned, such that open space and undeveloped land is an increasingly valuable resource.
