Darren Glass Former captain West Coast Eagles, leadership speaker Darren Glass is a former Australian Rules footballer who was one of the West Coast Eagles all-time great players and was highly regarded for his leadership abilities during his playing career. He was a champion defender for the Eagles and played 270 games for the club during his 14-year career. Today, Darren is highly sought after and highly respected as a leadership speaker at corporate, government and sporting events. Originally from Western Australia, Darren began his career with Perth Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL), before being recruited by West Coast Eagles with the 11th pick in the 1999 National Draft. He made his debut for the Club the following season in Round 4, 2000 against Adelaide. Playing mainly as a full back, Darren was named in the All-Australian team on four occasions (2006, 2007, 2011), and as Captain of the 2012 team. During his extensive career with the Eagles he played in a team of well-known stars including Chris Judd, Daniel Kerr and Ben Cousins. On 9 November 2007 Darren was announced as the new Captain of West Coast Eagles following the departure of Chris Judd who returned to Victoria. Darren was appointed to lead the recovery of the club after a series of off-field scandals. Darren was captain of West Coast Eagles for 129 matches and is widely acknowledged as an outstanding leader – with only his former coach, John Worsfold (138 games), leading the club into battle more often. After a successful season playing all 22 matches in 2009, Darren won his second Club Champion Award ahead of fellow defender Shannon Hurn. He followed this up two years later in 2011 when he won his third Club Champion Award and fourth All Australian selection. Darren was also named West Coast Eagles Best & Fairest Player in 2007, 2009 and 2011. On 12 June 2014 Darren announced his retirement from competitive football due to injury effective immediately. The highly respected club captain said he was physically unable to play another game, battling hip and ankle injuries. Scandals in sport AN ACCOMPANIMENT TO ON THE TAKE TONY JOEL AND MATHEW TURNER Contemporary Histories Research Group, Deakin University February 2020 he events that enveloped the Victorian Football League (VFL) generally and the Carlton Football Club especially in September 1910 were not unprecedented. Gambling was entrenched in TMelbourne’s sporting landscape and rumours about footballers “playing dead” to fix the results of certain matches had swirled around the city’s ovals, pubs, and back streets for decades. On occasion, firmer allegations had even forced authorities into conducting formal inquiries. The Carlton bribery scandal, then, was not the first or only time when footballers were interrogated by officials from either their club or governing body over corruption charges. It was the most sensational case, however, and not only because of the guilty verdicts and harsh punishments handed down. As our new book On The Take reveals in intricate detail, it was a particularly controversial episode due to such a prominent figure as Carlton’s triple premiership hero Alex “Bongo” Lang being implicated as the scandal’s chief protagonist. Indeed, there is something captivating about scandals involving professional athletes and our fascination is only amplified when champions are embroiled, and long bans are sanctioned. As a by-product of modernity’s cult of celebrity, it is not uncommon for high-profile sportspeople to find themselves exposed by unlawful, immoral, or simply ill-advised behaviour whether it be directly related to their sporting performances or instead concerning their personal lives. Most cases can be categorised as somehow relating to either sex, illegal or criminal activity, violence, various forms of cheating (with drugs/doping so prevalent it can be considered a separate category), prohibited gambling and match-fixing.

While the unit was understandably reeling from its worst ever loss, and rightfully focused on rebuilding the short notice Counter Terrorism capability that Australia relies upon it to provide, a selfless group of individuals coalesced, unprompted, and set about creating this amazing institution. In doing so, they reacted swiftly, decisively and generously; and have continued to ever since. The 20 years since the Blackhawk tragedy represents about a “generation” within the Special Air Service Regiment; the unit’s most senior soldiers today were young troopers or lance corporals back in 1996 when the accident occurred. Sadly, during that generation, almost every single member of the unit has experienced the loss of a friend in training or combat. But on each occasion, in the midst of their grief, our men and women have also seen the Fund immediately step into action. As a result, we have witnessed the children of our fallen mates grow up, being cared for by the Fund. No one can replace a lost father or husband but through its financial support and empathy, the Fund provides a backbone of solace in this darkest of situations. By virtue of this fact, every time our soldiers step forward into the breach, they do so confident in the knowledge that should they fall in the service of this country, the Fund has their back, and will continue to take care of that which is most precious to them.

One of the Boys: The (Gendered) Performance of My Football Career Ms. Kasey Symons PhD Candidate 2019 The Institute for Sustainable Industries and Liveable Cities (ISILC), Victoria University, Australia. Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Abstract: This PhD via creative work comprises an exegesis (30%) and accompanying novel, Fan Fatale (70%), which seek to contribute a creative and considered representation of some women who are fans of elite male sports, Australian Rules football in particular. Fictional representations of Australian Rules football are rare. At the time of submission of this thesis, only three such works were found that are written by women aimed to an older readership. This project adds to this underrepresented space for women writing on, and contributing their experiences to, the culture of men’s football. The exegesis and novel creatively addresses the research question of how female fans relate to other women in the sports fan space through concepts of gender bias, performance, and social surveillance. Applying the lens of autoethnography as the primary methodology to examine these notions further allows a deeper, reflexive engagement with the research, to explore how damaging these performances can be for the relationships women can have to other women. In producing this exegesis and accompanying novel, this PhD thesis contributes a new and creative way to explore the gendered complications that surround the sports fan space for women. My novel, Fan Fatale, provides a narrative which raises questions about the complicit positions women can sometimes occupy in the name of fandom and conformity to expected gendered norms.
