WORDS—A Collection of Poems and Song Lyrics by Paul F
WORDS— A Collection of Poems and Song Lyrics By P.F Uhlir Preface This volume contains the poems and songs I have written over the past four decades. There is a critical mass at his point, so I am self-publishing it online for others to see. It is still a work in progress and I will be adding to them as time goes on. The collections of both the poems and songs were written in different places with divergent topics and genres. It has been a sporadic effort, sometimes going for a decade without an inspiration and then several works in a matter of months. Although I have presented each collection chronologically, the pieces also could be arranged by themes. They are about love and sex, religion, drinking, and social topics—you know, the stuff to stay away from at the holiday table. In addition, although the songs only have lyrics, they can be grouped into genres such as blues, ballads, and songs that would be appropriate in musicals. Some of the songs defy categorization. I have titled the collection “Words”, after my favorite poem, which is somewhere in the middle. Most of them tell a story about a particular person, or event, or place that is meaningful to me. It is of personal significance and perhaps not interesting or understandable to the reader. To that extent, it can be described as a self-indulgence or an introspection; but most of them are likely to have a broader meaning that can be readily discerned. I’m sure I will add to them as time goes on, but I felt it was time to put them out. -

Theroad for Safer Senior Drivers
PAVING the ROAD for Safer Senior Drivers Letter From the Governor Fellow Delawarean, We want you safely driving as long as possible. That’s why our Senior Driving Task Force, a great group of partners of state and private agencies, worked together and designed this guide. As the number of older drivers across the United States increases, Delaware boasts the fastest growing older population in the country. Studies tell us that experienced older drivers are less likely to speed or drink-and-drive and more likely to wear safety belts, but also are more likely to be hurt in a crash. This guide provides helpful information and some steps you can take to ensure you are comfortable and in control behind the wheel. We want to keep you safe and mobile for as long as possible on Delaware’s roads – and all roads. Delaware does more for senior drivers and this is one part of our effort to pave the road for you. “Let Me Tell You My Life in a Song” on Autobiography and Begging in Broadside Ballads of the Blind
THE EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF LIFE WRITING VOLUME VII(2018)34–52 “Let me tell you my life in a song” On Autobiography and Begging in Broadside Ballads of the Blind Karin Strand Svenskt visarkiv/Musikverket, Stockholm Let me tell you my life in a song, for when I remember time seems so long My days are dark, and heavy everything so I beg you: listen when I sing.1 1st stanza of “Lamentation of an invalid” by the former railway worker Karl Joelsson (1870–1953) who lost his sight, his hearing and both hands as he was dynamiting in America 1910. ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH What can street ballads tell us about the lives and realities of “common people”, of experiences “from below”? This article discusses the functional aesthetics and social context of one particular genre that has circulated in ephemeral song prints (skillingtryck) in Sweden: beggar verses of the blind. For centuries, such songs were sold in the streets and at market places as a means for the blind to earn a living, and a major part of them tell the life story, the sad fate, of their protagonists. Many prints declare the genre of autobiography on their very front page, quite literally selling the story of the protagonist’s life and ad- dressing the audience’s compassion. How, then, do these narratives relate to real life? How is individuality and authenticity expressed within a genre that to a large extent relies upon conventions and formulas? As is argued, songs of this kind are a suggestive source material of vernacular literacy, as well as of social and personal history from below.
