RAC Rally of the Tests 2016 Chairman's Chat th What a great night it was - the SD34 MSG 2015 Awards Presentation Evening on 12 February. Sincere thanks to the organisers at Clitheroe & District MC, our excellent guest speakers, two of whom, Simon Bowen and Nigel Worswick joined Aaron Newby at very short notice, Ian Grindrod who ran an interesting and of- ten funny forum, everyone who not only attended but also brought a stack of raffle prizes, all those who bought raffle tickets which generated almost £200 towards the costs and to Gary Heslop who once again organised all the trophies. Again congratulations to the award winners and I was pleased to see that most of the winners were in attendance to collect their trophies. The 2016 season is now under way and the first scores are included inside. There is still plenty of time to regis- ter for the championships at just a £5 for everything (free for the Marshals Championship) so get a form complet- ed and sent in and you could be picking up a trophy at the 2016 Presentation Evening. Trophies Galore! Club members Kris Coombes, Louis Baines and Alan Barnes scooped awards at the SD34 MSG presentation evening. Kris won the novice road rally navigator award, Louis the novice road rally driver trophy and Alan placed third overall and second expert road rally navigator. The club also picked up an award for Matt Kendall for first novice stage rally navigator. Alan has had a busy time of it in February as he also won Garstang and Preston Motor Club’s champion road rally navigator and stage rally co-driver awards, won the Kirkby Lonsdale Motor Club A.I. Harrison Road Rally Championship first overall road rally navigator trophies and has also placed third overall in the ANCC Road Rally Championship for 2015. Calling All Road Rally Newcomers! Alan also presented an Introduction to Road Rallying evening for young and not so young members (see pic- ture pg. 6)) who, having had a taste of motorsport through the club’s very successful autosolos, have de- cided they want more and fancy having a go at road ral- lying. It was a successful and informative night with 30 mem- bers joining the session where explanations were given about basic map reading, basic reference plotting, route delineation, NAMs, blackspots, quiet zones and what they mean, the equipment you need to avail yourself of for your first event, and the importance of working as a team with the driver (drivers please note!).

    THE MULTIPLE ESTATE: A FRAMEWORK FOR THE EVOLUTION OF SETTLEMENT IN ANGLO-SAXON AND SCANDINAVIAN CUMBRIA Angus J. L. Winchester In general, it is not until the later thirteenth century that surv1vmg documents enable us to reconstruct in any detail the pattern of rural settlement in the valleys and plains of Cumbria. By that time we find a populous landscape, the valleys of the Lake District supporting communi­ ties similar in size to those which they contained in the sixteenth century, the countryside peppered with corn mills and fulling mills using the power of the fast-flowing becks to process the produce of field and fell. To gain any idea of settlement in the area at an earlier date from documentary sources, we are thrown back on the dry, bare bones of the structure of landholding provided by a scatter of contemporary documents, including for southern Cumbria a few bald lines in the Domesday survey. This paper aims to put some flesh on the evidence of these early sources by comparing the patterns of lordship which they reveal in different parts of Cumbria and by drawing parallels with other parts of the country .1 Central to the argument pursued below is the concept of the multiple estate, a compact grouping of townships which geographers, historians and archaeologists are coming to see as an ancient, relatively stable framework within which settlement in northern England evolved during the centuries before the Norman Conquest. For those in the know, of course, there is Tno mystery around the location since they are aware that what is now a road was once a railway. Situated on the former Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith line, Bassenth- waite Lake station saw holidaymakers and haulage alike pass between its platforms from 1865 to 1966, when the Beeching cuts put an end to the station’s operation. However, the origins of the train itself is literally the stuff of fiction. A full-scale replica of the model featured in Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, it is the train that appears in the 2017 film adaptation of the best-selling writer’s world-famous novel.     The Loudon-clear guide to… RSAC Scottish Rally Officially, Saturday is the RSAC Scottish Rally. But to you, me, and the wider world of British rallying, it’s The Scottish. It’s this country’s biggest rally and one no summer would be complete without. The Scottish has been running since 1961 and the list of winners is a real who’s who of world rallying. All three of the rallying McRaes: Jimmy, Colin and Alister won it, as did M-Sport World Rally Team boss Malcolm Wilson. And the Finns have had fair success north of Hadrian’s Wall too; Ari Vatanen, Hannu Mikkola, Pentti Airikkala, Simo Lampinen, Mikael Sundstrom and Tapio Laukkanen all took at least one win. Tommi Makinen might have four world titles, but he’s only for an F2 win on the Scottish… The event has evolved down the years and it’s no longer the race up and down the land it once was, but a Dumfries base still offers access to some of the world’s most wonderful woods. Stages like Twiglees and Castle O’er are part of British rallying legend and it’s fantastic to see the best of the British Rally Championship lining up there on Saturday morning. As you’d expect, there’s a bit of a family connection with the Scottish: my father (Fergus Loudon) scored his best result on this rally when he co-drove John Gray to 11th overall in a Group A Ford Sierra Cosworth in 1990. They finished just one place behind a certain Jimmy McRae, taking the award for top privateer crew.

It was formed from three existing parishes, Embleton, Setmurthy and Wythop. It is bordered by the River Derwent in the North, the Cockermouth Town boundary to the West, Long Fell and Lord’s Seat to the South and Bassenthwaite Lake to the East. It has several small clusters of population around Dubwath, the Ruddings, Wythop Mill, Beckhouse, Routenbeck, Stanger and Shatton, as well as the larger ribbon of homes along the route of the old A66 through the Embleton Valley. There are single farmhouses and homes along the many minor roads in the parish. The total population as shown in the 2011 census was 442 people living in 193 households.
