Saint George Parish Community Under the Guidance of the Holy Spirit 22 E. Cooke Avenue, Glenolden, PA 19036 - 610-237-1633 - www.stgeorgeparish.org 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 4, 2021

Jesus departed from there and came to His na- tive place, accompanied by His disciples. When the sabbath came, He began to teach in the syna- gogue, and many who heard Him were aston- ished. They said, “Where did this Man get all this? What kind of wisdom has been given Him? What mighty deeds are wrought by His hands! Is He not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Si- mon? And are not His sisters here with us?” And they took offense at Him. Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in His native place and among His own kin and in His own house.” So He was not able to perform any mighty deeds there, apart from curing a few sick people by laying His hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith. ~Mark 6: 1-6a

Happy Independence Day! God our Father, Giver of life, we entrust the United States of America to Your loving care. You are the rock on which this nation was founded. You alone are the true source of our cherished rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Reclaim this land for Your glory and dwell among Your people. Send Your Spirit to touch the hearts of our nation´s leaders. Open their minds to the great worth of human life and the responsibilities that accompany human freedom. Remind Your people that true happiness is rooted in seeking and doing Your will. Through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, Patroness of our land, grant us the courage to reject the "culture of death." Lead us into a new millennium of life. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Prayer to Saint Joseph Join us as we pray the Prayer to Saint Joseph at the conclusion of Mass throughout the re- mainder of this Year of Saint Joseph: Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To you God entrusted His only Son; in you Mary placed her trust; with you Christ became man. Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy and courage, and defend us from every evil. ~Amen.

GospelGospel Reflection Reflection and and Parish Parish Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson Last April, many of us became “Brits” for the day as we watched the combined military and religious funeral rites for England’s late Prince Philip. We knew something of his fidelity in his tireless service to his adopted country, and in his accepted role as consort to the queen for more than 75 years. We also had to acknowledge his humility as expressed in the funeral ceremony. It was back in 1922, when his uncle, King Constantine I of , had been forced to abdicate in the wake of his disastrous prosecution of the Greco-Turkish war. Only 18 months old and barely ahead of the rioting mob, Philip was smuggled out of Greece in an orange crate that his family had converted into a makeshift crib. A British light cruiser then safely transported them to France. My point here is that all this involved a certain rejection, even if the boy was too young to realize it. Here we are today, celebrating our Independence Day from that very same England. In that masterful Declaration of Inde- pendence, written by Thomas Jefferson, we as a people clearly displayed our rejection of England’s rule. It so stung King George that he declared war on the colonies that defied him. My point is that there really is pain involved in all kinds of rejection. It’s a sting to the heart. Most of us have experienced some form of it in our personal lives. Rejection hurts most of all in matters of the heart. With little effort I can recall the sting I felt when the girl I asked to the junior prom turned me down. Many of us have felt the sting in the breakup of a love affair; or the divorce from marriage vows once happily taken. Hurt infects us when the college admission board turns us down. Or when the expected pay raise is denied, or the promotion not granted. The list is long and long remembered. It is only natural that we wonder where God is in all of these things. Does He know what it feels like? Does He care? If in Jesus He was “like us in all things but sin” was rejection part of the equation? In this weekend’s Gospel, we get the answer. Surely Jesus was rejected, even by His own relatives. More than that, biblical scholars tell us there was an implied insult in calling Him “the Son of Mary,” because in those days all Jews were identified as being sons of their fathers. Where does that leave us? I believe in a place of consolation and ultimate peace. Our God truly understands our pain. Re- jection was no stranger to Him. Yet, He offered a cure: Trust in Faith. This accompanied by His declaration of support: He loves us unconditionally. Maybe at the painful moments we don’t want pat answers or even Scripture quotes. It is only later that we realize that when we coped with rejection and kept on trusting God, we became a better person. G. Campbell Morgan was 1 of 150 young men who sought entrance into the Methodist ministry in 1888. He had passed his written exam but faced the test of giving a trial sermon in front of a panel. When the results were released, Morgan’s name was among the 105 who were rejected. He wired his father with one word: “Rejected.” Then he sat down and wrote in his diary: “Very dark. Everything seems still. He knoweth best.” The reply to his wire was quick to arrive. It read. “Rejected on earth, accepted in heaven. Dad.” Morgan, in later years, became the famous Doctor George Campbell Morgan D.D. who was a British evangelist, preacher, a leading Bible teacher, and a prolific author. As Morgan went on to prove, rejection on earth is often of little consequence. As his father wisely recognized, it is of no consequence in heaven. And that, after all, is our true home. While you enjoy your holiday, may God love you and give you His peace.

Nothing Compares to Being There!

We share with you today an article written by Archbishop Perez this past Pentecost Sunday because of the importance of his message “Nothing com- pares to being there!”

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, The words spoken at the Consecration of the Mass resonate deeply in our souls. This is My Body which will be given up for you. This is the chalice of My Blood … which will be poured out for you. At every Mass, we bear witness to Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and resurrection from the dead. Through the gift of the Eu- charist, which the Lord instituted at the Last Supper, we receive His pure and boundless love over and over again. As Catholics, we believe that the Eucharist is the Body and Blood of Christ. Such a precious gift deserves our reflection and appreciation. It’s not some- thing we can experience virtually. Christ’s presence in the Eucharist is real and our personal presence is required to receive it. The COVID-19 pandemic brought many changes to our lives, to our routines, and even to our Sunday worship. For a period of time, we were not able to be personally present for the celebration of Sunday Mass at all. For the last several months, many have been a part of Sunday Mass through live streaming. Now, as the pandemic wanes and restrictions are lifting, I invite all the faithful of the Archdiocese to make their way back to the in- person celebration of the Mass. As helpful as livestreaming was during the difficult months of the pandemic, when it comes to the Mass, nothing compares to being there. Today, on this Pentecost Sunday, I am pleased to announce an Archdiocesan initiative based on this truth and called Nothing Compares to Being There. It will involve the entire Archdiocese and feature an invitation for everyone to recognize more profoundly the irreplaceable need to be in person for the celebration of Sunday Mass. During the summer months, pastors and parish leaders will be preparing a heartfelt invitation to their communities and together we will issue this invitation in September 2021. While the fullness of this invitation happens in September, even now I encourage you, “Nothing compares to being there.” Come home to the in- person celebration of Mass. On this glorious feast of Pentecost, may God pour out His Spirit upon us and enkindle in us a renewed desire to be present at the Eucharistic Feast. Sincerely in Christ Jesus, Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez, D.D., Archbishop of Philadelphia

Please, join us for Mass because “Nothing compares to being there!” Spread the word!

United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Vote to Write a Document on the Meaning of the Eucharist in the Life of the Church Statement of Archbishop Jose H. Gomez of Los Angeles, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops

June 21, 2021

Last week, my brother bishops and I voted overwhelmingly to issue a teaching document on the beauty and power of the Eucharist. The doctrine committee of the bishops’ conference will now begin drafting this document and, in the months ahead, the bishops will continue our prayer and discernment through a series of regional meetings and consulta- tions. In November, the bishops will gather to discuss the document draft. The Eucharist is the heart of the Church and the heart of our lives as Catholics. In the Holy Eucharist, Jesus Christ Himself draws near to each one of us personally and gathers us together as one family of God and one Body of Christ. As bishops, our desire is to deepen our people’s awareness of this great mystery of faith, and to awaken their amazement at this divine gift, in which we have communion with the living God. That is our pastoral purpose in writing this document. I invite everyone in the Church to pray for the bishops as we continue our dialogues and reflections. I pray that this will be a time for all of us in the Church to reflect on our own faith and readiness to receive our Lord in the Holy Eucharist.
