They came to Selma to memorialize two recently fallen heroes of the civil rights movement. The first was twenty-six-year-old African American Jimmie Lee Jackson, a civil rights activist and deacon of St. James Baptist Church in Marion, Alabama. Jimmie Lee, his mother Viola, and his eighty-two-year-old grandfather Cager Lee were among the five hundred voting-rights demonstrators who participated in a peaceful march to the Marion courthouse on the evening of February 18, 1965. Before the marchers could reach their destination, Marion police, Perry County sheriff’s deputies, and Alabama state troopers brutally attacked and pursued demonstrators as they scattered and fled for safety. In the midst of the melee, Jimmie Lee, his mother, and his grandfather sought refuge in a nearby diner. Law enforcement officers cornered the three and commenced to beat Jimmie Lee’s grandfather and mother. When Jimmie Lee attempted to intervene, Alabama state trooper James Bonard Fowler shot him twice in the stomach. Jackson died from his wounds eight days later. The other fallen hero of the movement was thirty-eight-year-old James Reeb, a white Unitarian minister from Boston, Massachusetts, a civil rights activist, and a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. After receiving the news of Jimmie Lee Jackson’s death and about the planned voting-rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Reverend Reeb along with Reverends Clark Olsen and Orloff Miller arrived in Selma to participate. On Sunday, March 7, 1965, the three Unitarian ministers marched; both survived the brutal police attacks inflicted upon the demonstrators over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Two days later, they also participated in the second attempted march, this time with Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. That 2 evening after dinner and on their way back to their motel, a group of white segregationists beat the three ministers outside a suspected Ku Klux Klan gathering place. Reverend Reeb sustained severe brain injuries from the bludgeoning and died in a Birmingham hospital two days later on March 11. The tragic deaths of Jimmie Lee Jackson and Reverend James Reeb spurred a national outcry against the virulent racial hatred that seemed to prevail in the South.     “The Negroes’ Temporary Farewell” JIM CROW AND THE EXCLUSION OF AFRICAN AMERICANS FROM CONGRESS, 1887–1929 On December 5, 1887, for the first time in almost two decades, Congress convened without an African-American Member. “All the men who stood up in awkward squads to be sworn in on Monday had white faces,” noted a correspondent for the Philadelphia Record of the Members who took the oath of office on the House Floor. “The negro is not only out of Congress, he is practically out of politics.”1 Though three black men served in the next Congress (51st, 1889–1891), the number of African Americans serving on Capitol Hill diminished significantly as the congressional focus on racial equality faded. Only five African Americans were elected to the House in the next decade: Henry Cheatham and George White of North Carolina, Thomas Miller and George Murray of South Carolina, and John M. Langston of Virginia. But despite their isolation, these men sought to represent the interests of all African Americans. Like their predecessors, they confronted violent and contested elections, difficulty procuring desirable committee assignments, and an inability to pass their legislative initiatives. Moreover, these black Members faced further impediments in the form of legalized segregation and disfranchisement, general disinterest in progressive racial legislation, and the increasing power of southern conservatives in Congress. John M. Langston took his seat in Congress after contesting the election results in his district. One of the first African Americans in the nation elected to public office, he was clerk of the Brownhelm (Ohio) Townshipn i 1855.

Frazee When Saint Vincent de Paul organized the Congrega- tion of the Mission and the Daughters of Charity, one of his aims was to provide a group of men and women who would work in foreign lands on behalf of the Church. He held firm opinions on the need for such a mission since at the very heart of Christ's message was the charge to go to all nations preaching the Gospel. St. Vincent believed that the life of a missionary would win more converts than theological arguments. Special care and attention will be provided to the most vulnerable groups, including unaccompanied migrant children. Planned activities in 2020 include accommodation support, capacity building of local actors, protection, legal counselling, psychosocial support, integration, interpretation services, transportation, access to education and non-formal education services, population mapping, community participation, care and maintenance, and provision of non-food items (NFIs). Context Analysis Since 2015, Greece has become one of the main gateways to the European Union for hundreds of thousands of people coming from the Middle East, Africa and Asia. War and political and economic instability in different regions has increased the number of irregular migrants and asylum seekers entering Greece from the eastern sea borders and by land, overcrowding the islands' reception and identification centres (RICs). The number of arrivals has particularly spiked over the last months, with large inflows and very limited outflows from the country. The efforts to decongest the overcrowded reception facilities on the Aegean islands are ongoing but are slow given the limited amount of accommodation available in the mainland. There is an imperative need to reinforce the current accommodation capacities within the emergency reception schemes. Greek authorities, with the support of IOM and other stakeholders, are making efforts to alleviate human suffering and ensure proper living conditions of the populations by prioritizing decongestion of the reception facilities on the islands and/or other locations.

Under the administration of President Andrew Johnson in 1865 and 1866, new southern state legislatures passed restrictive “black codes” to control the labor and behavior of former enslaved people and other African Americans. Outrage in the North over these codes eroded support for the approach known as Presidential Reconstruction and led to the triumph of the more radical wing of the Republican Party. During Radical Reconstruction, which began with the passage of the Reconstruction Act of 1867, newly enfranchised Black people gained a voice in government for the first time in American history, winning election to southern state legislatures and even to the U.S. Congress. In less than a decade, however, reactionary forces– including the Ku Klux Klan–would reverse the changes wrought by Radical Reconstruction in a violent backlash that restored white supremacy in the South. Emancipation and Reconstruction At the outset of the Civil War, to the dismay of the more radical abolitionists in the North, President Abraham Lincoln did not make abolition of slavery a goal of the Union war effort. To do so, he feared, would drive the border slave states still loyal to the Union into the Confederacy and anger more conservative northerners.
