John Lucey* Kilkenny, Ireland *Corresponding author: John Lucey, email: [email protected] This pdf constitutes the Version of Record published on 13th August 2019 Abstract Most modern authorities have considered Euphorbia hyberna to be native in Britain but with the possibility that it could have been introduced from Ireland. The results from a literature survey, on the historical occurrence of the species, strongly suggest that it was introduced and has become naturalised at a few locations in south-west England. Keywords: status; Cornwall; Devon; Lusitanian; horticulture Introduction The Irish Spurge (Euphorbia hyberna L.) is an extremely rare plant in England with only recent occurrences for west Cornwall, north Devon and south Somerset (Stace, 2010) although now extinct in the last vice-county (Crouch, 2014). The earliest records for the three vice-counties contained in the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland (BSBI) Database (DDb) are: 1842 v.c.4 Lynton (Ward, N.B. More, W.S.) 1883 vc.1 Portreath (Marquand, E.D.) 1898 v.c.5 Badgworthy Valley (Salmon, C.E.) As the only element of the so-called Lusitanian flora in England, with an extremely restricted distribution pattern in the south-west, the species represents an unresolved biogeographical conundrum: native or naturalised? A review of the historical literature can provide valuable information on a species’ occurrence and thus may help in determining if it may have been introduced to a region. SONATAS FOR VIOLIN AND BASSO CONTINUO WRITTEN BY BRITISH COMPOSERS IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY MAGDALENA KOSTKA Dissertation submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Cardiff University School of Music June 2014 ii Abstract The sonata for violin and basso continuo was one of the most popular instrumental genres in early eighteenth-century Europe, as is clearly evident from the numerous works by Italian, German and French composers of the period, whose contributions are widely known and documented. Violin sonatas by British-born composers of the period, on the other hand, have largely been neglected by scholars and performers and no systematic examination of this repertoire has thus far been conducted. The present thesis attempts to contextualise this rich and fascinating repertoire and view it holistically. It aims to contribute substantially to knowledge about the British violin sonata during the period and enhance our understanding of its function, content, dissemination and performance. Fifteen collections of sonatas for violin and continuo written by British-born composers in the first half of the eighteenth century have been selected for detailed analysis. These works have been examined from two different perspectives: as social phenomena and as aesthetic objects. Following relevant introductory materials contextualising the research, the first part of this thesis presents biographical accounts of the selected composers, their careers and musical environment, and the circumstances surrounding the publication and distribution of their sonatas. In Part II the sonatas under scrutiny are analysed in terms of their external designs and internal forms, tonal scope, and harmonic and melodic vocabulary, as well as their technical demands. -

Estienne Roger's Foreign Composers
Estienne Roger’s Foreign Composers R R In the history of music publishing, Estienne Roger takes a very special place.1 This Huguenot, born in Caen in France, who settled in Holland after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, started a publish- ing irm in Amsterdam with another Huguenot, Jean-Louis de Lorme, in 1696. From 1697, he worked on his own. He published “conventional” books as well as music books. It was in the latter ield that he earned his renown. He can be said to have been the irst publisher with a truly international catalog and also with a truly international market. He sold his music not only in Holland, but also in the Low Countries, France, the German-speaking areas, Scandinavia and England. Roger died in 1722, but had transferred the music business nominally to his younger daughter Jeanne Roger prior to his death. Her name is mentioned in the imprint of all editions from some point in 1716 onwards, but it is unclear if she was actually involved in the management of the irm. She died later in 1722, and after her death the music publishing enterprise came into the hand of Roger’s son-in-law, Michel-Charles Le Cène, who had married 1 The basic study about the music publishing irm of Roger and Le Cène is still L, 1969.
