BENJAMIN, Judah. Collection of autograph letters relating to mortgage bond coupons of the Atlantic and Great Western Railway Company. V.p., chiefy London: ca. December 1868 - July 1870. Material creased from prior folds, generally very good or better. A collection of autograph letters by Judah Benjamin to Senator Thomas F. Bayard concerning the redemption of mortgage coupons issued by the troubled Atlantic and Great Western Railway Company. Benjamin (1811- 1884), the former Secretary of War, Attorney General and Secretary of State of the Confederate States of America, was, at the time of this correspondence, living in and establishing a law career. In a series of fve autograph letters written to Delaware Senator Thomas F. Bayard (1828-1898), Benjamin engages Bayard’s help in attempting to redeem mortgage coupons for the Atlantic and Great Western Railway Company totalling £875. The collection also includes three autograph letters from James McHenry, President of the Atlantic and Great Western Railway Company, to Bayard, concerning the coupons (one letter mentioning Jay Gould of the Erie Railway Company); an autograph letter from Edward McDermott of the Atlantic and Great Western, to Bayard; draft of a letter from Bayard to McHenry; autograph letter from Robert (?) Potter of the Altantic and Great Western; two letterpress printings of a lease aggreement between the Atlantic and Great Western Railway Company and the Erie Railway Company. $4,000

And by him a Present to Bridget Penrose.”) Additionally inscribed on verso of fep (“John Blanely’s Bible”) and with 1 p. manuscript geneology of Sweetman and Penrose family on blank following frst volume. A remarkable gathering of frsts in a single volume: the frst Catholic Bible printed in the United States, the frst Catholic Bible printed in any language in the New World, the frst Bible printed in quarto format in the U.S., the frst Bible printed by Mathew Carey, and the frst minority-religion Bible printed in America. Catholics constituted only a small minority of the population of the United States in 1790. Even so, Mathew Carey, an exile from Ireland, believed that America could support the publication of an edition of the English Catholic Bible. He secured approximately 475 subscribers, and it is thought the print run did not exceed 500 copies. In 1954 a census of extant copies found thirty-fve copies in public and private collections. While the number of copies today may perhaps be forty-fve, the volume’s continuing rarity may be understood when one realizes that the Vatican Library did not possess a copy until 1979. With good reason, Margaret Hills describes this edition as “the rarest of the notable early American editions of the Bible.” A signifcant edition both in the history of Bible printing and the history of publishing in the United States. A fne copy in a contemporary binding, belonging to subscriber Richard Sweetman and his descendents. $35,000

One of the most important references on seventeenth-century arts in the Netherlands. The frst part deals with painters who died between 1600 and 1661, the second with artists still active in 1661, the third with sculptors, architects and engravers who were active until 1661. Contemporary red morocco, covers with ruled in gilt with triple fllet border, spine with 5 raised bands, titled in gilt in one, the rest gilt all over with a repeating lightning bolt or staircase pattern, a.e.g., gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, by Derôme the younger (with his ticket to frst blank). Wear to head of spine, some sporadic spotting to text. Cf. PMM 157 (for original edition). One in a series of works of French and Latin literature printed by Didot and originally published in 1681 by the order of Louis XIV for the education of the Dauphin. Boussuet’s history was the last in a long line of universal histories, from St. Augustine onwards, that interpreted history as the continuing manifestation of divine providence. This copy fnely bound by Derome the younger, with his ticket, and tooled on the spine with a distinctive staircase or lightning bolt tool. $2,500

Funeral binding of black painted vellum for a memorial to the jurist J.B. Schwartzenthaler, who had taught at the University of Vienna. It contains contributions in prose and poetry by Schwartzenthaler’s friends in Vienna and Tubingen. $2,500

Oblong 4to (11-3/4 x 9-7/8 inches), [London: ca. 1703]. Green morocco tooled in gilt to a cottage- roof design with massed small tools, outer roll tool border in gilt, spine titled “Dodici sonate a tre,” paste paper endsheets, silver clasps engraved with arms and motto (Che sarà sarà) of the 2nd Duke of Bedford and catches with engraved goats and crown on clasps. Rebacked, preserving original spine, some light wear to covers. Cf. Haym, Complete Sonatas, Part I, edited by Lowell E. Lindgren. For binding, cf. Henry Davis, II, no. 148; Nixon, Five Centuries of English Bookbinding, no. 53; Nixon, English Restoration Bookbindings, no. 38. (1678-1729), German-Italian virtuoso cellist and composer, came to England with violinist Nicola Cosimi in 1700 to serve Wriothesley Russell, the 2nd Duke of Bedford, as musicians in his Southampton House in Bloomsbury. They each received an annual salary of 100 guineas and were charged with organizing concerts and performing for the Duke and his friends. Both Haym and Cosimi composed and dedicated works to their patron while in England, as did composer and botanist James Sherard, who sometimes joined in performance with the two Italians. Haym composed two sets of trio sonatas for two violins and fgured bass, and it is undoubtedly his opus 1 collection, Dodici sonate à tré, published in Amsterdam by Estienne Roger in 1703 and dedicated to the Duke of Bedford for which these fnely-bound covers were made. We attribute the binding to Robert Steel, apprentice and successor to Samuel Mearne. $7,500

Some light foxing throughout, still a beautiful, near fne set. Armorial bookplates partially removed from each volume. PMM 212 (for frst). A beautiful set of the frst Paris edition of Blackstone’s Commentaries of the Laws of England, translated by Chompré from the London edition of 1809. The frst edition in French, translated from the 1770 fourth English edition by August Pierre Damiens de Gomicourt, was published in Brussels in six volumes, 1774-6. A pirated edition, it was not a particular faithful translation and was superseded by this authorized edition of 1822-3. $2,500

Early calf, with spine label stamped in gilt, marbled edges. Rebacked, boards rubbed, and modern endpapers, some browning at the foredge afecting one gathering, otherwise near fne. A manuscript copy of Lord Byron‘s English Bards, Scotish Reviewers based on the 1818, Paris edition published by Galignani. This gift volume is warmly dedicated by the scribe, “Rich. G Hindson requests Mr. / Christr. Wannop’s acceptance / of this Book as an Assurance / of his Friendship / March 2nd 1819.” Hindson’s transcription closely follows the Galignani frst edition of 1818, retaining the many notes at the foot of the page, as in the printed exemplar, and omitting only the short pieces “Ode” and “A Sketch from Private Life” at the end of the volume. The practice of making scribal copies of printed texts at the end of the nineteenth century was not an uncommon practice, and the greater esteem that such copies held for their owners and recipients is witnessed in the careful hand in which it was produced. $700

A highly important work of political economy, published in Paris under a false imprint, and designed to stimulate investment in the United States by the French. Brissot was one of the most pro-American French thinkers of the period; he later wrote a well-known work on his American travels, and later died in the Terror. This work seeks to enlighten the French and American public about the possibilities for mutually benefcial investments. Dedicated to the American Congress and the “friends of America in both worlds,” it reviews a number of economic issues, such as balance of trade, the superior benefts of French manufactures for American markets, why French wines and oils were better than any that could be produced in the U.S., and a broad range of specifc products. Various American products ranging from rice to furs are then discussed. In the end the authors include a prospectus for their proposed “Societe Gallo-Americaine.” Claviere and Brissot worked together on a number of political tracts, and both believed that the example of America’s fedgling democracy held the key to France’s future. $1,750

In this proto- American narrative Crèvecoeur asks, “What then is the American, this new man?” Crèvecoeur’s response to the question was structured like a novel, with discernable storylines and characters. The expanded 1787 French version of Letters, includes more autobiographical, historical, and geographic content that moves the text away from the novelistic form of the earlier English edition toward something more sturctured. Crèvecoeur thought of both editions as the same work, this making the complete 1787 edition essential for a comprehensive understanding of his work, and the identity of “this new man.” With notable maps of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. $2,750

He was an honorary pallbearer at the funeral of Frost’s wife Elinor, and Cook would visit Frost during the poet’s summer stays in Ripton, VT. The early poem “Forest Flowers,” which opens with the lines “Some fowers take station close to where we stay, And some draw up on either side of the way,” was originally published in 1917 in The Pinkerton Annual, the literary magazine of Pinkerton Academy, Derry, New Hampshire, where Frost taught from 1906 to 1911. The poem did not appear in any of Frost’s lifetime editions, though a ten-line variant titled “Tutelary Elves” was published in 1966. The original poem was separately published in 1978 as Forest Flowers: An Early Poem Recovered by the Friends of the Amherst College Library. Frost has added a note beneath his transcription of the poem, “This was written almost earlier than anything else in this book.” This volume is a later printing of the 1939 Collected Poems and includes the 1942 collection A Witness Tree. $5,000

Invited by Sir Ronald Storrs to the British organized conference at Jiddah, Lawrence impressed the Arab leaders, and thereafter played his spectacular role as the revolt succeeded, entering into the mythology of the twentieth century. His account is itself one of the legendary books of the century, elaborately produced and illustrated with works commissioned by Lawrence. The present copy includes the “Prickly Pear” plate, but not the two Paul Nash illustrations called for on pages 92 and 208, or the Blair-Hughes-Stanton wood engraving that in some copies illustrated the dedicatory poem. I have delayed to write until the date of publication was reasonably certain. … It will not inconvenience me in the least (quite the contrary!) if you decide not to take your copy. The book costs thirty guineas: is very long, and rather dull.” A FASCINATING LETTER. 2. JOYCE, Colonel Pierce C. Two Autograph Letters, signed. Substantial letters from Col. Pierce Joyce, another key ofcer in the Arab revolt, and a friend Mrs. Campbell and her late husband. The frst is written from Baghdad in 1925, 28 December 1925 (signed “P.C. Joyce”). 8 pp., with original envelope. “A man just from England came in to see us yesterday & tells me he hears Lawrence is about to destroy all existing copies of his book & rewrite it again this year or next — worse than ever!” Joyce also tells Mrs. Campbell about the forthcoming book, and how he wrote Lawrence “and demanded a copy of his book as being his chief supporter in the Arabian gamble.” Joyce fgures prominently in Seven Pillars and there is a portrait of him by Dobson, which Joyce disliked, as he notes in the other letter. STC (2nd ed.), 4911; ESTC S107195. Frequently identifed as the frst European novel, La Celestina is a tragic-comedy in dialogue frst published 1499, followed by an expanded edition in 1502. The tale is of Calisto, a young man who engages the procuress Celestina to attract the young and unmarried Melibea, a girl heavily protected by her parents. Although the protagonists employ the rhetoric of courtly love, marriage is not their desired goal; alas, the lovers have a tragic end. Rojas’ Spanish original infuenced Miguel Cervantes and Lope de Vega, as well as the development of European prose fction in general. For English literature, there is equal interest in this edition’s translator, the Oxfordian, James Mabbe (1571–1642?). After matriculation at Oxford, Mabbe served for several years in Madrid as secretary to Sir John Digby, the English ambassador to Spain, whose mission was to negotiate a marriage between Prince Henry and the eldest daughter of Philip III, Ana (who went on to marry Louis XIII instead); however Mabbe’s time in Spain was not misspent in mere diplomacy, and he made himself familiar with Spanish letters and customs. By 1617 he was back at Magdalen College, where he began producing acclaimed translations of Golden Age Spanish literature. His close friend Edward Blount published an elaborate folio edition of The Rogue (1622), Mabbe’s translation of Matheo Aleman’s picaresque novel Guzman de Alfarache. The following year, under the initials I. M., Mabbe contributed a short poem to the 1623 Shakespeare folio, co-published by Blount. The Spanish Bawd appeared in 1631, in a translation that Mabbe initiated some years earlier (a manuscript exists: Alnwick Castle, MS 510), and that relied on translations in both French (Lavardin, 1578) and Italian (Ordonez, 1506). Mabbe, the frst English Hispanist, also translated a series of novellas by Cervantes in 1640. Mabbe’s activity as a man of letters and translator of canonical Spanish literature placed him in a central role in Early Modern English literary culture. His writing possesses a fuency that still resonates with critics, with one modern editor describing his work as “a piece of masterly English prose” (Fitzmaurice-Kelly, xxiii). His connection with Blount and his shared interest with Shakespeare in disseminating Spanish literature in England make him a signifcant fgure for contemporary scholars. A collection of 26 medical dissertations, mostly published in Strasbourg, 1637-1684, related to various topics including, dysentery, gunshot wounds, the plague, kidney stones, psychological ailments, sleeplessness, surgery on tumors, tooth rot and other maladies. The book includes a manuscript index note at the beginning of the volume and each pamphlet is numbered in manuscript. Most of the titles are quite rare, OCLC showing 3-5 institutions as holding the individual titles. The variety of topics suggests that a physician documenting current research or academic activity in medical studies in Strasbourg compiled the volume. The unique French title in the collection closes the volume and discusses the use of the earliest eau de toilette, L’eau de la Reine de Hongrie, as an antiseptic tonic for the plague. Address on the verso of the fnal page of the letter, with red wax seal, addressed to “Miss Smith / Drury Lane Theatre / London” and postmard in red “Feb 12 / 1814.” Included is an engraved portrait of Scott “from the original picture in the possession of Mr. Murray painted 1824.” “Letters of Sir Walter Scott” London: Constable, 1932-37, Vol. 3, pp. 411-12. Written to the actress Sarah Smith, later Bartley, (1783?–1850), some fve month before the publication of his great success Waverley, which appeared July 7, 1814. Scott and Miss Smith, as he addressed her, were frequent correspondents, and he praised her performances and her character in his letters to others. In one letter he encouraged Miss Smith to “have Shakespeare and the Dramatists of that golden age of theatrical genius as often in your hand as you can” (10 Dec 1811) and he presented her with a copy of his “Rokeby” upon publication in 1813. Scott tells Miss Smith: “I am not writing any-thing just now, and indeed have no thoughts of doing so for some time for I should tire of writing and what is worse though your politeness or rather let me say your partiality may contradict me people would unquestionably tire of reading.” It is no surprise that Scott claimed literary inactivity during this period in which he was composing Waverley — he worked hard to preserve his anonymity, in spite of the novel’s eventual success. This letter provides insight into Scott’s interaction with his contemporaries as he transitioned from being a celebrated poet to the progenitor of a new genre, the historical novel. $2,250

Approximately 100 f. of fne laid paper, the recto of the frst leaf notated “Ship Factor bound from Beverly towards Rotterdam. Elisha Whitney Commander. Sailed June 24th AD 1806 … May God grant a safe and speedy passage.” This log covers 47 f., including the log title. A second voyage is included, starting at leaf 48 “Ship Factor Commanded by Elisha Whitney from Boston bound for Amsterdam & St. Petersburgh.” This extends for 33 f. The balance of the book is blank. 11 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches (30 x 25 cm), [On board ship: 1806-1807. Original oversize lettered hessian, the upper cover with the notation “Ship Factor’s Log Book. AD 1806,” the contents with the original stab-stitching to the hessian spine. Slight toning, generally in a remarkably good state of preservation. These are the log books for two voyages of this commercial vessel, covering both round trips. The frst voyage, with a cargo consisting primarily of cofee and sugar, departed from Quincy to Rotterdam, continued on to Alicante and La Mata on the southern coast of Spain, and then returned to New York. The second log records a voyage from Amsterdam to St. Petersburg (i.e., Cronstat), where the Factor picked up a cargo of Russian hemp and iron, and fnally back to New York. Written in a fne, legible hand, these two logs record not only the progress of the vessel, latitude and longitude, and the weather, but include encounters with other vessels, the confguration of sails used, the employments of the crew, two drawings of islands, notes of food and water issued, etc. The Registers of the District of Salem and Beverly, Massachusetts, 1789-1900 record the Factor as a brig of 253 tons, owned by Thomas Stephens and Abraham Kilham of Beverly, Massachusetts, built at Haverhill in 1806, and registered on June 21, three days before its maiden voyage, recorded in the frst log. Episodes noted include being boarded by armed men from a Spanish privateer on September 28th, 1806 while working through the Straits of Gibraltar. In this instance, all ended well, when an English brig to windward bore down to aid them. There is also an account of striking a shoal on January 7, 1807, a serious mishap, and being boarded by a Russian Man o’ War about 4 miles from Cronstat. American ship logs from this period are uncommon, and with its fne hand-lettered binding, this is an excellent and appealing example, worthy of research into the growth of American trade with Europe at the height of the Napoleonic War and in the years preceding the War of 1812. $4,500

Signed by Whitman on the front cover and with his marks in blue pencil on eight pages. Very good. Custom black half morocco slipcase and chemise. Povenance: Bodley Bookshop, N.Y.C., invoice 1956 for $17.50 to Whitmans scholar Loren K. Davidson. Signed by Walt Whitman on upper right corner “W.W. 1880” and annotrated in blue pencil at pp. 5, 6, 9, 14, 15, 27, 30 and 31. In the autumn of 1880, Whitman wrote an extensive essay on Quaker abolitionist Elias Hicks. He had long planned to write about Hicks, and he read this biographical account with great interest, and, as was frequently the case, with his blue pencil in hand. His markings show him to be looking at original source material about Hicks rather than Burnap’s prose. Born in Hempstead, Long Island, Elias Hicks (1748-1830) headed one of the two factions in the frst major schism within the Religious Society of Friends. A liberal Quaker preacher, he advocated abolition among other causes. Hicks was an acquaintance of Whitman’s father and a close friend of Whitman’s grandfather Jesse. Whitman’ mother Louisa shared her husband’s admiration for Hicks, who preached the value of Inner Light against the authority of ordained clergy, and Walt Whitman credited his mother for introducing him to Hicks. In November 1829, 10-year-old Walt heard Hicks preach at Morrison’s Hotel in Brooklyn, later recalling his “resonant, grave, melodious voice.” Whitman’s essay, “Notes (Such as They Are) Founded On Elias Hicks,” appears in his 1888 newspaper column collection November Bough. Walt Whitman’s markings (no handwritten words) are on pages 5, 6, 9, 14, 15, 27, 30, and 31. A sample: WW has bracketed and drawn an arrow to: “Who was Elias Hicks? Elias Hicks was born in the township of Hempstead, in Queens County, on Long Island, on the 19th of March, 1748. His parents, John and Martha Hicks, belonged to reputable families, and were at the time of his birth in connection with the Society of Friends” (p. 6). Whitman draws a perpendicular line and arrow to “an incidental notice” by Elias Hicks about his visit to Saratoga in 1781 (p. 9). On another page, he’s underlined the following: “It is said that in England no Dissenting family drives its carriage more than two generations” (p. 14). WW brackets and draws an arrow to a lengthy quote from Hicks to Nathan Shoemaker of Philadelphia in 1823 beginning: “And inasmuch as those idle promulgators of the doctrine of original sin believe they are made sinners without their consent or knowledge, which according to the nature and reason of things every rational mind sees is impossible, so likewise they are idle and ignorant enough to believe they are made righteous without their consent or knowledge by the righteousness of one who lived on the earth near two thousand years before they had an existence, and this by the cruel act of wicked men, slaying an innocent and a righteous one …” (p. 27). On page 31, WW underlines “the origin of our religious ideas, — are they innate or acquired?” and draws a question mark in the margin next to it. Excellent autograph letter, signed, from the great French novelist Emile Zola (1840-1902) to an unnamed recipient, sending a cheque (not present) for 400 francs “en paiement du buste en bronze que vous avez fondu pour moi et je vous prie de vouloir bien m’envoyer une facture acquittée.” For Zola, 1888 was an eventful year. On 14 July, the Legion d’honneur was conferred upon Zola (he had previously refused in 1884 and 1886). Two days before the present letter was composed, he fnished writing La Rêve. “En 1888, Zola a deux révélations: l’amour et la photographie” (Massin). He took up photography and met Jeanne Rozerot, who became his mistress toward the end of the autumn. Zola’s engagement with the arts was signifcant and of long standing, and in 1891 when elected president of the Société des gens de lettres, he lobbied for Rodin to be chosen for the planned monument to Balzac.
