20 Anne Arundel County Public Library “Why I support the Library Foundation” racticing in Anne Arundel County for over 25 years, Dr. Mairead M. O’Reilly is a well-known provider of orthodontic and dentofacial orthopaedics in Annapolis. In 2014, Mairead supported the early learning program at the Annapolis Regional Library by donating a digital learning station—called a Play and Learn Station (PALS). She Pmade her gift through the Library Foundation’s For the Love of the Library fundraising event in 2014. Two PALS are situated in each of the library’s 15 branches. Designed to accommodate young children, the computers sit on shorter, child-size tables and feature a color-coded keyboard and a small-sized mouse designed for children’s hands. PALS feature interactive and educational software, as well as computer games, especially designed to help young children become adept at using a keyboard and software. Mairead made her decision to donate the stations for a number of reasons, including for the many library-sponsored programs her three now-grown children enjoyed while growing up in Annapolis. “I brought them to many programs over the years, beginning when they were toddlers. They loved coming to the library,” she said. Mairead also credits her own upbringing in her native Ireland for instilling in her a love of books and reading. “My father read to us every night. I grew up in a family of readers,” she added. “When I first heard about these computers I thought, ‘what a wonderful idea.’ It Library supporter Dr. Mairead M. zO’Reilly at the Annapolis Regional Library. touched a chord with me. I wanted to make it possible for the young children who visit the library to have their own experience using a computer. The PALS make that possible,” Mairead said. Mairead was not the only Library Foundation supporter who donated funds to purchase individual PALS in 2014. Other donors providing the funds to purchase complete PALS included Lisa and Dick Hillman and Chuck and Beverly Ferrar. In addition, more than 200 donors made gifts toward the goal of putting two PALS in each of Anne Arundel County’s 15 libraries. I want to help the Library with a gift to the Foundation.
