An Assessment of Exotic Species in the Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve
AN ASSESSMENT OF EXOTIC SPECIES IN THE TONLE SAP BIOSPHERE RESERVE AND ASSOCIATED THREATS TO BIODIVERSITY A RESOURCE DOCUMENT FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF INVASIVE ALIEN SPECIES December 2006 Robert van Zalinge (compiler) This publication is a technical output of the UNDP/GEF-funded Tonle Sap Conservation Project Executive Summary Introduction This report is mainly a literature review. It attempts to put together all the available information from recent biological surveys, and environmental and resource use studies in the Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve (TSBR) in order to assess the status of exotic species and report any information on their abundance, distribution and impact. For those exotic species found in the TSBR, it is examined whether they can be termed as being an invasive alien species (IAS). IAS are exotic species that pose a threat to native ecosystems, economies and/or human health. It is widely believed that IAS are the second most significant threat to biodiversity worldwide, following habitat destruction. In recognition of the threat posed by IAS the Convention on Biological Diversity puts forward the following strategy to all parties in Article 8h: “each contracting party shall as far as possible and as appropriate: prevent the introduction of, control, or eradicate those alien species which threaten ecosystems, habitats or species”. The National Assembly of Cambodia ratified the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1995. After reviewing the status of exotic species in the Tonle Sap from the literature, as well as the results from a survey based on questionnaires distributed among local communities, the main issues are discussed, possible strategies to combat the spread of alien species that are potentially invasive are examined, and recommendations are made to facilitate the implementation of a strategy towards reducing the impact of these species on the TSBR ecosystem. -

Published by the Genetics Society of America. 24 Abstract 25 Tc1-like transposons consist of an inverted repeat sequence flanking a transposase gene 26 that exhibits similarity to the mobile DNA element, Tc1, of the nematode, Caenorhabditis 27 elegans. They are widely distributed within vertebrate genomes including teleost fish; 28 however, few active Tc1-like transposases have been discovered. In this study, 17 Tc1-like 29 transposon sequences were isolated from 10 freshwater fish species belongs to the families, 30 Cyprinidae, Adrianichthyidae, Cichlidae and Salmonidae. We conducted phylogenetic 31 analyses of these sequences using previously isolated Tc1-like transposases and report that 16 32 of these elements comprise a new subfamily of Tc1-like transposons. -

The new species can be distinguished from the congeneric species mainly by the arrangements of the testes, which form two longitudinal bands (other congeneric species have the testes irregularly scattered throughout the testicular region) and their number (at maximum 85 testes versus at least 160 in the other Khawia spp.), and the mor- phology of the scolex, which varies from cuneiform to widely bulbate scolex, being separated from the remaining body by a short neck and possessing a smooth, blunt or rounded anterior margin. Other typical features of K. abbottinae are its small size (total length less than 1.5 cm) and body shape, with the maximum width at its first third. -

Sex identification and composition analysis is an important research topic in fish population ecology, and the results have important implications concerning the conservation of wild fish resources and artificial propagation. However, since the individual morphological differences between male and female spotted steed (Hemibarbus maculates) are not obvious, it is usually difficult to identify sex by direct observation. Thus, it is usually done by observing the reproductive system after dissection. However, this method results in the death of the identified fish and cannot be used for later reproduction. To establish a method for sex identification of H. maculates by morphological quantitative indicators, 36 directly measured traits and 35 standardized traits from 68 H. maculates individuals collected from the Yuanzhou section of the Yuanhe River, China, were measured and analyzed. Based on the data, 13 personalities were screened from the 35 standardized traits by stepwise discriminant method and used to establish discriminant equations. The rate of correctly identifying the male and female individuals was 92.65%. In addition, the condition factor, D7-9, the dorsal fin long-throned length, the post-orbital length, D7-10, the head length, and the body length were significantly different between male and female H. -

The major divisions in the Haploporidae have been based on the organization, development, and nature of the male and female reproductive systems. Overstreet and Curran (2005) has been the only attempt to organize the genera of the Haploporidae in a subfamilial framework. In the present work the validity of the subfamily Waretrematinae by Overstreet and Curran (2005) is assessed by morphological and molecular methods, based on original descriptions, type and vouchered, specimens and newly collected material for morphology and rDNA sequence data analyses.
