Advancing banana and plantain R & D in Asia and the Pacific Proceedings of the 9th INIBAP-ASPNET Regional Advisory Committee meeting held at South China Agricultural University, Guangzhou, China - 2-5 November 1999 A. Roa, editors The mission of the International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain is to sustainably increase the productivity of banana and plantain grown on smallholdings for domestic consumption and for local and export markets. The Programme has four specific objectives: · To organize and coordinate a global research effort on banana and plantain, aimed at the development, evaluation and dissemination of improved banana cultivars and at the conservation and use of Musa diversity. · To promote and strengthen collaboration and partnerships in banana-related activities at the national, regional and global levels. · To strengthen the ability of NARS to conduct research and development activities on bananas and plantains. · To coordinate, facilitate and support the production, collection and exchange of information and documentation related to banana and plantain. Since May 1994, INIBAP is a programme of the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI). The International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI) is an autonomous international scientific organization, supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). IPGRIs mandate is to advocate the conservation and use of plant genetic resources for the benefit of present and future generations. IPGRIs headquarters is based in Rome, Italy, with offices in another 14 countries worldwide. It operates through three programmes: (1) the Plant Genetic Resources Programme, (2) the CGIAR Genetic Resources Support Programme, and (3) the International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain (INIBAP). The international status of IPGRI is conferred under an Establishment Agreement which has been signed and ratified by the Governments of Algeria, Australia, Belgium, Benin, Bolivia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chile, China, Congo, Costa Rica, Côte dIvoire, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, Egypt, Greece, Guinea, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritania, Morocco, Norway, Pakistan, Panama, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Senegal, Slovakia, Sudan, Switzerland, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, Uganda and Ukraine. Although the Guangzhou area of tropical and subtropical region in China is only about 5% of the total Chinese territory, it is one of the most productive regions, particularly for fruit production. Among tropical and subtropical fruits, banana is number one in terms of area, coverage and economic potentials. It is because banana is grown easily, has quick return on investment and is suitable for mass production. In the provinces of Guangdong, Fujian, Guangzi, Hainan and Yunnan, banana is the major source of income of many families and revenues for local government units. Since its inception, INIBAP-ASPNET has been very active around the world, particularly in Asia and the Pacific Region. China also benefited from the organization, specially after the 4th RAC Meeting of INIBAP-ASPNET held at our university, with the promotion of tissue culture plants, introduction of new varieties, adoption of new cultural techniques, among others. Banana consuming markets in China have grown because of production expansion, output increment and quality improvement. Under the cooperation between INIBAP and China, it is expected that our banana production will be further improved. During this period, China has been actively taking part in INIBAP-ASPNET activities including research programs, international conferences, training courses on Musa, exchange of banana information such as MGIS and RISBAP. We hope to explore more opportunities for cooperation with INIBAP member countries and institutions in activities such as germplasm utilization, disease control, organic cultivation techniques and so on. In these fields, we wish to contribute to the R & D in Asia and the Pacific and the world. South China Agricultural University is a key university in China with comprehensive programs supportive of INIBAP-ASPNET. The University covers 486 ha of land and has about 1,800 faculty members and staff and 14 colleges and departments. Its students come from all over China and abroad.
