Several molecular analyses support accep- tance of only two Musa sections, M. sect. Musa and M. sect. Callimusa. Musa sect. Rhodochlamys is synonymized with M. sect. Musa and M. sect. Australimusa and M. sect. Ingentimusa are treated as synonyms of M. sect. Callimusa. Species lists are provided for the two accepted sections. Keywords Musa; Musa sect. Australimusa; Musa sect. A Look at Ornamental Bananas Esendugue Greg Fonsah, Richard Wallace, and Gerard Krewer In many parts of the world bananas are a staple food, while in other regions they are a highly valued ornamental plant. Bananas are the fourth most important food crop in the world, and they are also used in many other ways—every part of the plant has value. In addition to the standard dessert bananas, there is another group of species in the banana ge- nus that are much less known in the United States but offer some wonderful options as landscape plants. This group of banana species is known as ornamental bananas. This paper sheds some light on ornamental banana cultivars that provide a tropical atmosphere to gardens in the Southeast region of the United States. The Programme has four specific objectives: · To organize and coordinate a global research effort on banana and plantain, aimed at the development, evaluation and dissemination of improved banana cultivars and at the conservation and use of Musa diversity. · To promote and strengthen collaboration and partnerships in banana-related activities at the national, regional and global levels. · To strengthen the ability of NARS to conduct research and development activities on bananas and plantains. · To coordinate, facilitate and support the production, collection and exchange of information and documentation related to banana and plantain. Since May 1994, INIBAP is a programme of the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI). The International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI) is an autonomous international scientific organization, supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). IPGRIs mandate is to advocate the conservation and use of plant genetic resources for the benefit of present and future generations. IPGRIs headquarters is based in Rome, Italy, with offices in another 14 countries worldwide. It operates through three programmes: (1) the Plant Genetic Resources Programme, (2) the CGIAR Genetic Resources Support Programme, and (3) the International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain (INIBAP). -

INIBAP is a nonprofit organization whose aim is to increase the production of banana and plantain on smallholdings by: – initiating, encouraging, supporting, conducting, and coordinating research aimed at improving the production of banana and plantain; – strengthening regional and national programs concerned with improved and disease- free banana and plantain genetic material; – facilitating the interchange of healthy germplasm and assisting in the establishment and analysis of regional and global trials of new and improved cultivars; – promoting the gathering and exchange of documentation and information; and – supporting the training of research workers and technicians. Planning for the creation of INIBAP began in 1981 in Ibadan with a resolution passed at a conference of the International Association for Research on Plantain and Bananas. Musa yamiensis is closely related to M. insularimontana Hayata, but differs from the latter in subhorizontal infl orescence, yellow-green with pink at apex bracts, 4 fl owers in a bract in 1 row, and the size and structure of fl owers. Introduction The Musaceae contain three genus, namely Musa L., Ensete Bruce and Musella (Franchet) C.Y.Wu ex H.W.Li (Wu and Kress, 2000). No one knows for sure the precise number of species in the Musaceae. For the record, most authorities now give the number of Musa species as 35 to 42 in 4 sections and the number of species of Ensete as 7 to 9. -

DOI: 10.5252/a2011n2a3. ABSTRACT All the names accepted in the genus Ensete Horan. are listed and typifi cations supplemented. All Ensete names have originally been described as belonging to the genus Musa L. Altogether, 37 names were found, the fossil Ensete orego- nense excluded, 36 species and variety are considered. Currently, eight species are recognised, i.e. E. agharkarii, E. gilletii, E. glaucum, E. holstii, E. homblei, E. perrieri, E. superbum and E. ventricosum, and one variety, E. glaucum var. wilsonii comb. nov. Of the names, eight are illegitimate, and three dubious. A great confusion seems to be connected with E. ventricosum, which is indigenous KEY WORDS in Africa.
