Norbert Holstein iv Note In this thesis, I present the results of my doctoral research, which took place from September 1, 2007 to April 30, 2012, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Susanne S. Renner. The results of my research led to four manuscripts of which three have been published (chapters 1 to 3), while a fourth (chapter 4) has yet to be submitted. I carried out all data collection and analyses, if not otherwise indicated in the corresponding acknowledgements. Writing and discussion of these manuscripts involved collaboration with Prof. Dr. S. Optical microscopy was used to reveal the anatomical structure of the vegetative (root, stem, tendrils, leaves) and reproductive (ovary, male flower petals) organs. Histo-anatomical details were highlighted by coloration with an original combination of reagents for the double coloration of cellulose and lignin. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and stereomicroscopy led to the elucidation of the structure of tector and secretory trichomes on the inferior epidermis of the leaf.

Coccinia grandis (Cucurbitaceae) is a perennial plant popularly known as kundru, Tondlee, Ivy gourd, Bimbi and Scarlet gourd etc. This herb is used in folk medicine in the form of intact fruits for healing oral ulcers. So the present work was done with an objective to develop a gel formulation from hydroalcoholic extract of coccinia grandis fruit for the treatment of ulcer and for healing of associated wound and inflammation. Molecular docking study was carried out for lupeol and taraxerone, the chemical constituents contained in the fruits. The dock score values were found to be -51.83 and -35.87 respectively for antiulcer activity. For wound healing activity the values found were -27.25 and -27.17 respectively for the two components, whereas the dock score values obtained for the anti-inflammatory activities were -58.6632 and -58. respectively for lupeol and taraxerone. The negative dock score value shows better affinity to bind receptor site. Application of hydroalcoholic extract gel of (20%w/w) for antiulcer and wound healing activities caused a significant reduction in ulcer and wound area when compared with the untreated controls and marketed formulation.

Bryonia alba L. and Ecballium elaterium (L.) A. Rich. are two species belonging to this family, that are known since ancient times for their homeopathic or traditional use in the treatment of numerous disorders. There is clear evidence that links between the two species are not only related to family morphological characters, but also to a certain degree to the sexual system and, most importantly, to the active principle content or to potential medicinal uses. All these elements helped to include both species in the same tribe and may result in important reasons for heading future studies towards the elucidation of their complete phytochemical composition and mechanisms of the biological activities.

Accepted 24 March, 2009 This paper presents the results of an assessment of the ethnobotanical uses of some plants recorded in upper Nyong valley forest implemented by the Cameroon wildlife conservation society project (CWCS). Forestry transects in 6 localities, followed by socio-economic study were conducted in 250 local inhabitants. As results, medicinal information on 140 plants species belonging to 60 families were recorded. Local people commonly use plant parts which included leaves, bark, seed, whole plant, stem and flower to cure many diseases. According to these plants, 8% are use to treat malaria while 68% intervenes to cure several others diseases as described on. There is very high demand for medicinal plants due to prevailing economic recession; however their prices are high as a result of prevailing genetic erosion. This report highlighted the need for the improvement of effective management strategies focusing on community forestry programmes and aims to encourage local people participation in the conservation of this forest heritage to achieve a sustainable plant biodiversity and conservation for future posterity.

An additional two species were recognized as possibly occurring in Mississippi as well. Diagnoses for all of the genera and species in the state are provided and keys to the genera as well as all of the species were made. Species were found in every county within Mississippi and are representative of the Bariditae fauna of the southeastern United States. Open, prairie-like habitats and aquatic wetland habitats were the habitats with the highest biodiversity of Bariditae in the state. Species of Baris, Geraeus, Linogeraeus, and Odontocorynus, were found in the highest numbers and Linogeraeus and Sibariops were found to be the most speciose genera in the state.
