We are working on a replacement venue. 5 Weekend Help Wanted Help is needed to fill jobs for our upcoming Weekend. These jobs are essential to the weekend and carry a full or partial payment of the weekend fee. For the upcoming Winter Weekend we need a transportation coordinator who will try to match up rides going up with riders before the weekend and rides going back at the weekend. This job entitles you to a free weekend. If you are interested, please contact the club president, Evy Mayer (president[at] folkmusicny.org) or phone 7185491344 after 11 am). Weekend Scholarships Available Applications are now being accepted to the Winter Weekend (tententatively February 911) for the George Parker Scholarship and the Mayer Scholarship. These funds provide either full or partial scholarships to individuals who could not otherwise attend and who have a strong interest in folk music, singing, and/or instrumental playing. TO APPLY: Please download an application from the website www.folkmusicny. org or request an application form from the address below. The most important considerations are financial need and interest in folk music. The candidates will be considered and notified by mail. Please send it in before January 6th to: Marilyn Suffet, 4105 47th Street, Sunnyside, NY 11104 Phone: 7187861533; Email: ssuffet[at]nyc.rr.com In an effort to make our weekends available to more members there are now several scholarship funds set up: George Parker Scholarship provides scholarships for each weekend to a club member otherwise unable to attend. The fund was established in memoriam by George’s parents, the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club, and other contributors. George was a young man and a friend of folk music who greatly enjoyed our weekends. Charles & Ilse Mayer Scholarship Fund provides scholarships for each weekend each year. This fund was set up in memoriam by board member Evy Mayer in honor of Evy’s father Charles Mayer and her mother, Ilse Mayer. You may make a fully taxdeductible contribution in any amount to any of the funds above by sending a check payable to “Folk Music Society of New York” (noted with the name of the scholarship memorial) to our treasurer, Heather Wood, 444 W. 54th St, #7, NYC, NY 10019. To establish a new named fund in honor of or in memoriam of a loved one, please contact any of our current board members (see list on page 21). Upper West Side Song Swap Takes Off The Upper West Side Song Swap had its second singaround on November 12 at the Hosteling International on Amsterdam Avenue between 103 and 104th Street. We’re off to a good start with some very fine singing and playing of traditional, contemporary and original songs by the participants, with plenty of opportunities to join in and sing along. The one thing that we’re missing is you! Come join us on Sunday, December 10 from 5 to 8 PM at the Hosteling International and add your voices or even just your ears. This program is cosponsored by the Folk Music Society of New York and the Peoples’ Music Network. 6 We hope you had a great Thanksgiving and will enjoy the coming holidays. We at the Folk Music Society of New York will do our part to bring you music throughout the month. We have lots of opportunities for you participate and make music. Happy birthday, Frank Woerner! Tom Weir sent in the following about a musical celebration: The Nov. 1 Folk Open Sing at the Ethical Culture Society in Prospect Park was an extraspecial occasion, with more than 50 people showing up to wish longtime Pinewoods member Frank Woerner a happy 80th birthday. The brainchild of Alison Kelley, who cofounded the Open Sing more than two decades ago and began planning the party in June, the event came as a complete surprise to Frank. Alison coordinated the festivities with Frank’s son and daughter. Attendees enjoyed sandwiches, soft drinks and snacks in addition to birthday cake and a lot of great music. After recovering from the initial surprise, Frank joined others in singing a number of favorite songs, as well as leading some from his own extensive repertoire, among them “Jock Stewart,” who, like Frank, is “a man you don’t meet every day.” Dan and Vicki Horowitz are proud of their sons and their families. Their oldest son, Alex and his wife, Emily, are making the world a more loving place by fostering young babies. Roger and his wife Anne Marie have a “fabulous” little girl, a toddler named Zora Frances, now 15 months old. She loves music and at this point in her development, she enjoys dancing with her shoulders!! She loves it when her dad plays the guitar and is particularly delighted when Grandpa Dan strums away. Both families live in Washington, DC. Needless to say, Dan and Vicki visit DC as often as they can. Joanne Davis’ son Adam, who lives in India, and goes by the name Ram Sharan on social media, has over 400 Facebook followers and counting. Her daughter Naomi just opened an office in Boise for acupuncture and Chinese herbology. Meanwhile, continued on next page 7 Folk Process, continued from previous page daughter Rachel spent Thanksgiving in Jerusalem and played Scrabble with an Israeli club that plays in English. Joanne’s sevenyearold grandson Ben now reads to her. An objective Joanne says that he is “phenomenal, of course.” If you have news to share, contact me at 372 West; #15B, New York, NY 10025; 2126636309, [email protected].
