John McCutcheon; Friday, April 17th, 7:30 pm John McCutcheon is a compelling singer whose songs sing of the nation’s heritage. His words channel the conscience of our people into streams of poetry and melody. He is an outstanding instrumentalist, especially renowned for his hammerd dulcimer playing. He performs original music and traditional folk music that he learned from the legendary figures of eastern Kentucky. John has made 31 recordings, has been nominated for six Grammys, toured on every continent, and served as the president of Local 1000 of the American Federation of Musicians. McCutcheon’s live perfor- mances have been described by critics as “little feats of magic,” “breathtaking in their Continued on next page - 2 - FMSNY Events Details- Continued ease and grace...” Before graduating summa cum laude from Minnesota’s St. John’s University, this Wisconsin native literally “headed for the hills,” forgoing a college lecture hall for the classroom of the eastern Kentucky coal camps, union halls, country churches, and square dance halls. His apprenticeship with many of the legend- ary figures of Appalachian music embedded a love of not only home-made music, but a sense of community and rootedness. The result is music – whether traditional or from his huge catalog of original songs – with the profound mark of place, family, and strength. . The concert will start at 7:30 PM at the Community Church, 40 E. 35th Street, (at Park Ave.). General admission is $25; Members, $20; children (under 18), $10. Tickets can be purchased at the door, or on line at: www.mccutcheon.eventbrite.com. For information call 718-672-6399 or on the web at www.folkmusicny.org. Woody Rediscovered; an Exploration of Woody Guthrie’s Less Known Songs, Friday, April 24th, 8 pm At last count there were 2,563 songs in the Woody Guthrie Archives, and Woody recorded well over 300 of them. However, only about 30 or 40 are well known today. In this musical workshop FMSNY board members Anne Price and Steve Suffet will introduce you to a few of Woody Guthrie’s other 2,500+ songs. Some were recorded or published in Woody’s own lifetime; others were discovered among his effects after his death. All deserve to be recognized as the gems that they are. Come prepared to learn some new old songs! At a private residence in South Orange, NJ. Space limited. Suggested donation: $15. Members: $12. Children under 18 & full-time students: $6. To register, call Educa- tion Chair Alan Friend: (718) 965-4074, before May 7. - 5 - Eileen Pentel As I write this, I have the feeling that spring is right around the corner and that April will be a warm and pleasant month. Right now, it’s still cold, but I do get warm when I think about the music ahead. John McCutcheon, who plays both traditional and original songs, will perform for us in April in a special concert. Note that the concert will start at 7:30 PM rather then the usual 8 PM. Also coming up are the Sea Music Concert and a Woody Rediscovered Workshop. Don’t forget our Folk Open Sing, our Chantey Sing, and the Sacred Harp Singing. On April 4th there will also be a singing party in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. May 3rd is ’s birthday. Let’s all sing a song for Pete on that day—if you are at a singing party, taking a walk, or in a supermarket, why not celebrate his con- tributions in song. As you know, these are hard economic times and the Folk Music Society of NY, Inc is also facing them. Instead of raising our dues, however, starting in September, we will have to charge for the series concerts which were, and still are for now, free to members. It will still be a good deal, since members will only have to pay $10 rather then the $20 admission that the general public has to pay. The upcoming series concert in May, Joe Jencks and in June, Annie and the Hedonists, will still be free to members. Thank you to the folks who mailed out the newsletter. They could always use more help. The following volunteers worked at the last mailing: Lynn Colee, Isabel Gold- stein, Eileen Pentel, Anne Price, Marilyn Suffet, Steve Suffet, Marcus Tieman, and Don Wade. Won’t you join us and help mail out the next newsletter on Wednesday, April 29? (See page 3.) Weekend Help Wanted Full and Partial Scholarships are available in exchange for administrative work done on our folk music weekends. Contact the Club President, Joy Bennett, 718-575-1906 if you are interested in any of the jobs for the coming Spring Weekend. Outreach via the Internet There are a lot of websites that offer great publicity resources for the Society and its events. We need volunteers to take responsibility for making sure our information gets listed correctly and updated in a timely manner. We’d like to spread the load, so each person is responsible for only one site. Maybe two. If you are interested, please contact Don Wade, [email protected]. - 6 - Folk Music Society of New York, Inc. / New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club Presents
