Victoria: The irG l Who Would Become Queen Abstract This research reviews the early life of Queen Victoria and through analysis of her sequestered childhood and lack of parental figures explains her reliance later in life on mentors and advisors. Additionally, the research reviews previous biographical portrayals of the Queen and refutes the claim that she was merely a receptacle for the ideas of the men around her while still acknowledging and explaining her dependence on these advisors. It is fast growing and exhibits re-growth from fragments. Limnophila sessiliflora is also able to shade out and out compete other submersed species. 2-4,D reportedly kills this species. view this species on IUCN Red List Species Description L. sessiliflora is described as an aquatic, or nearly aquatic, perennial herb with two kinds of whorled leaves. The submerged stems are smooth and have leaves to 30mm long, which are repeatedly dissected. Emergent stems,on the other hand are covered with flat shiny hairs and have leaves up to 3cm long with toothed margins. The emergent stems are usually 2-15cm above the surface of the water. The flowers are stalkless and borne in the leaf axis. The lower portion (sepals) have five, green, hairy lobes, each 4-5mm long. The upper portion is purple and composed of five fused petals forming a tube with two lips. The lips have distinct purple lines on the undersides. The fruit is a capsule containing up to 150 seeds (Hall and Vandiver, 2003). In the course of studying Limnophila of Taiwan, Yang and Yen (1997) describe L. sessiliflora. ABSTRACT Background: Caffeine (CAF) is known for its central nervous system stimulatory effect. Although, CAF use in diarrhea, especially in Runner's diarrhea is still controversial, but it has been reported that dark tea containing CAF has anti-diarrheal effect on Sennae- mediated diarrhea in mice. Aim: To evaluate the anti-diarrheal effect of CAF and its modulatory effects on the standard anti-diarrheal drug loperamide (LOP), an opioid receptor agonist. Materials and Methods: CAF (15 mg/kg, i.p.) with or without LOP (3 mg/kg, p.o.) was administered to the Swiss mice (Mus musculus) previously treated with castor oil. Additionally, an in silico study was also performed to see the possible anti-diarrheal mechanism of CAF and LOP. Results: CAF increased the latent period, while decreasing the diarrheal defecation during the observation period (4 hr) in the test animals. Interestingly, CAF co-treated with the LOP exhibited a prominent anti-diarrheal effect in comparison to the negative control, CAF and LOP groups. Further, in silico study suggests that CAF have the most binding affinity with the 6FH5 (PIK3CG) protein (-8.22 KJ/mol) of adenosine receptor, while LOP with the μ-opioid receptor. Conclusion: CAF showed significant anti-diarrheal effect as well as strengthen the anti-diarrheal effect of LOP in castor oil-induced diarrheal mice. -

Visualising Victoria: Gender, Genre and History in The Young Victoria (2009) Julia Kinzler (Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany) Abstract This article explores the ambivalent re-imagination of Queen Victoria in Jean-Marc Vallée’s The Young Victoria (2009). Due to the almost obsessive current interest in Victorian sexuality and gender roles that still seem to frame contemporary debates, this article interrogates the ambiguous depiction of gender relations in this most recent portrayal of Victoria, especially as constructed through the visual imagery of actual artworks incorporated into the film. In its self-conscious (mis)representation of Victorian (royal) history, this essay argues, The Young Victoria addresses the problems and implications of discussing the film as a royal biopic within the generic conventions of heritage cinema. Keywords: biopic, film, gender, genre, iconography, neo-Victorianism, Queen Victoria, royalty, Jean-Marc Vallée. ***** In her influential monograph Victoriana, Cora Kaplan describes the huge popularity of neo-Victorian texts and the “fascination with things Victorian” as a “British postwar vogue which shows no signs of exhaustion” (Kaplan 2007: 2). Yet, from this “rich afterlife of Victorianism” cinematic representations of the eponymous monarch are strangely absent (Johnston and Waters 2008: 8). The recovery of Queen Victoria on film in John Madden’s visualisation of the delicate John-Brown-episode in the Queen’s later life in Mrs Brown (1997) coincided with the academic revival of interest in the monarch reflected by Margaret Homans and Adrienne Munich in Remaking Queen Victoria (1997). Academia and the film industry brought the Queen back to “the centre of Victorian cultures around the globe”, where Homans and Munich believe “she always was” (Homans and Munich 1997: 1). -
