English Ceramic Circle Newsletter No 7 September 2019 _________________________________________________ President’s Preamble Welcome to ECC Newsletter No. 7. The dates for our meetings in 2019 and 2020 are listed below. Some of the information is necessarily provisional or has had to be changed since the last Newsletter so please do check this list before setting out to attend a meeting. The ECC visit to Sherborne Castle and Gardens on 22 May 2019 was a great success. Members enjoyed seeing the castle (built by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594) and reflects a variety of decorative styles in its rich interiors and important collections of porcelain, art, and furniture. Sherborne’s porcelain collection is celebrated for its Kakiemon with Chinese, Meissen, Chantilly and English ceramics plus rare Chelsea vases, Chelsea/Derby pieces, an armorial Chamberlains’ Worcester service, a Minton desert service and Bow and Isleworth items. Following a talk by an Archivist, we were given a tour through the castle when the ropes preventing close-up viewing of the ceramic cabinets were removed. We also had a special viewing of the pieces in store. You should by now have received the latest Transactions plus two additional volumes containing the papers given at two ECC seminars: Influences and inspiration – 400 years of Japanese porcelain and Neoclassical ceramics. If you have not received these three volumes, please email Patricia Macleod, ECC membership secretary or contact her via the ECC postal address on page 9. The publication of these extra volumes is possible due to some generous donations for which we are always very grateful. -

One thousand years. The Six Ancient Kilns the intersection of fire and humanity, soil and humanity, water and humanity The relationship between the Japanese and pottery dates back to the Jomon period (the earliest historical era of Japanese history coinciding with the Neolithic Period, from around 14500 BCE to around 300 BCE), when pottery was used for necessities such as preserving food, cooking, and rituals. Pottery not only helped build a civilization, it also exceeded conventional uses to enrich the culture of Japan in many ways. Of all the ancient pottery sites of Japan, the “Six Ancient Kilns”(pronounced nihon rokkoyo in Japanese) refers collectively to the six representative production areas of Echizen, Seto, Tokoname, Shigaraki, Tamba, and Bizen, whose pottery production has continued from the medieval period (1185- 1603) to the present day. The term “Six Ancient Kiln” was coined by renowned ceramics scholar, Koyama Fujio around 1948 and the sites were certified as each of the six areas has cultivated over the official Japanese Heritage sites in spring last 1000 years, and to inspire a vision of the 2017. future 1000 years from today based on these findings. It was, and is still, an objet of desire, an objet d'art, treasured and handed down through generations. Charles Vyse served an apprenticeship as a modeller and designer at Doulton's, 1896 and later studied at Hanley Art School and sculpture at the Royal College of Art, 1905-10. He worked first as a portrait and figurative sculptor before setting up a pottery studio in 1919 in Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, with his wife Nell who was especially knowledgeable about glaze chemistry. They produced colorfully decorated figures many of London characters, such as the 'Balloon Girl' and 'Barnet Fair'. After 1923 they experimented with high-fired wares and revived Chinese glaze techniques particularly chun and tenmoku glazes. During the 1930s they also produced contemporary designs with geometric patterns and calligraphy. Throughout that decade they sold mainly through Walker's Gallery in Bond Street where they had an annual exhibition every November. Around 1940 the couple separated and Nell Vyse gave up ceramics. After the studio was damaged in the blitz in 1940 Charles Vyse taught at Farnham School of Art. -

VOLUME I 1 – 10,803 - - - - - - Crafts Study Centre Bath 1984 - 1985 F O R E W O R D This is the third and final catalogue of the papers of Bernard Leach. However, a number of his letters are in the Muriel Rose archives, also held at the Crafts Study Centre: many of these are in answer to her own letters to him listed in the three Leach catalogues. Other Bernard Leach material may yet emerge, and hopefully any such records will be deposited at the Centre. Mr David Leach made available the first “trance” of these papers, for which the Centre is deeply grateful – as, indeed, it is for the contents of Bernard Leach II, also deposited by him. The second section of this catalogue concerns the papers of the late Mrs Trudi Scott, Bernard Leach’s housekeeper, confidante and indispensable prop during his last years. I had only one telephone conversation with her ever, shortly before she died, during which she promised me an original drawing by Bernard – which I never got! Following her death, I enquired of those close to her about her papers, and can thus claim credit for having saved them. They would otherwise have been thrown away. The collection consists largely of fascinating oddments, single pages of letters, infuriating but captivating jumbles of “membra disiecta”, which have required the repeated re-cataloguing of already catalogued entries, and the constant need to review and revise and rewrite, as fragments came together during the interim and final sortings. -

An Overview of the Evolution of Japanese Ceramics (For the Southeast Asian Ceramic Society) Christopher P. Wells, SEACS Lifetime Member January 27, 2021 Hokusai, Potters at Work, Imado (1805) Early Japanese Ceramics (15,000 BCE to 600 CE) Incipient/Early Jomon Period (15-13,000 BCE) • Jomon pottery dates from as early as 15,000 BCE. • There is speculation that Jomon pottery was produced by the Caucasian ancestors of the Ainu people (now on living reservations in Hokkaido) who originally inhabited most of Japan until gradually pushed North. • “Jo-mon” means “cord pattern” because most pottery from this time has designs impressed by strings. • Incipient Jomon pottery vessels have pointed bottoms and flaring lips • Some vessels are highly polished covered with iron oxide or lacquers. • Vessels were produced without potter’s wheel and firing took place at temperatures between 400-500 Centigrade in open (pit) kilns. • Ceramics of the Jomon pottery were remarkably strong and are outstanding productions of human Neolithic Age and the oldest scientific evidence of a pot for cooking is of Jomon origin. Middle Jomon Period Ceramics (3,000 to 700 BCE) • Vessels from this period were lower and wider and designed for utilitarian purposes • There are many thousands of examples and tens of thousands of fragments from this and Late Jomon periods • So-called “Fire Pots” (1500-500BCE) below are characteristic of the period appeal to modern abstract curators and artists. • Simple “dogu” figures (heads, torsos etc.) are also from this period such as the -
