SONY PICTURES CLASSICS AND STAGE 6 FILMS TO UNLEASH THE RAID 2 NEW YORK (November 5, 2013) – Sony Pictures Classics and Stage 6 Films announced today that they will theatrically release THE RAID 2 in the United States. The highly-anticipated sequel to the action thriller THE RAID: REDEMPTION, the new film THE RAID 2 was once again written and directed by Gareth Evans. The film was produced by Ario Sagantoro for Merantau Films, and Aram Tertzakian and Nate Bolotin of XYZ Films. The film was executive produced by Rangga Maya Barack-Evans for Merantau Films, Irwan D. Mussry, and Nick Spicer and Todd Brown on behalf of XYZ. Matt Flannery (THE RAID: REDEMPTION) and Dimas Imam Subhono served as cinematographers with Joseph Trapanese (THE BOURNE LEGACY), Aria Prayogi (THE RAID: REDEMPTION) and Fajar Yuskemal (THE RAID: REDEMPTION) scoring the picture. THE RAID: REDEMPTION was released theatrically in March 2012 by Sony Pictures Classics to great success. Zhou Xuan Yun On Feb. 1, 2013, the Library of Congress of the United States hosted an event to receive Wudang San Feng Pai. This event included a speech by Taoist (Daoist) priest and Wudang San Feng Pai Master Zhou Xuan Yun and the presentation of important Wudang historical documents and artifacts for a permanent display at the Library. Wudang Wellness Re-established in recent decades, Wudang San Feng Pai is an organization in China, which researches, preserves, teaches and promotes Wudang Kung Fu, which was said originally created by the 13th century Taoist Monk Zhang San Feng. Some believe that Zhang San Feng created Tai Chi (Taiji) Chuan (boxing) by observing the fight between a crane and a snake. Zhang was a hermit and lived in the Wudang Mountains to develop his profound philosophy on Taoism (Daoism), internal martial arts and internal alchemy. The Wudang Mountains are the mecca of Taoism and its temples are protected as one of 730 registered World Heritage sites of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Wudang Kung Fu encompasses a wide range of bare-hand forms of Tai Chi, Xingyi and Bagua as well as weapon forms for health and self-defense purposes. Traditionally, it was taught to Taoist priests only. It was prohibited to practice during the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966- 1976). -

Brooklyn, NY/Sep 8, 2014—From Monday, October 6 through Sunday, October 12, BAMcinématek presents Stephen Chow: The King of Comedy, an eight-film retrospective of the Hong Kong actor, writer, and director. Chow’s audaciously anarchic comedies combine surreal sight gags, non sequiturs, extensive pop culture quoting, and gravity-defying martial arts to sublimely silly effect. Endlessly inventive, the reigning king of Hong Kong mo lei tau (―nonsense comedy‖) yields unfiltered cinematic pleasure. Initially prominent as a children’s television star, Chow became synonymous with mo lei tau, a style of film comedy in which traditional melodramas and kung fu tales are peppered with rapid- fire, fourth-wall-breaking slapstick bits and corny puns. A bigger box-office draw in his homeland than Jackie Chan or Jet Li, Chow—who cites Spielberg and Kubrick, along with Jim Carrey, as influences—has used his clout in recent years to fashion himself as an auteur, scripting, editing, and directing a series of high-budget, homage-filled blockbusters. Typical of Chow’s earliest hits, Johnnie To’s Justice, My Foot! (1992—Oct 8) casts the actor as a fast-talking lawyer whose mouth gets him into trouble, and whose kung fu-fighting wife gets him out of it—one of many tough, smart heroines Chow uses as foils for his feckless alter egos. -

EnterText 6.1 SABRINA YU Can a Wuxia Star Act? Martial Arts, Acting, and Critical Responses to Jet Li’s Once Upon A Time In China Introduction It has been commonplace in western critical discourse to state that action stars can’t act. This seems particularly true when it comes to trans-bordering Chinese action stars like Jet Li. Criticism of his acting skills in his English-language films can be easily picked up from the press: Without the fight scenes, though, this film (Romeo Must Die) would be a bust… ‘Jet is our special effect,’ says Silver, summing up his star’s appeal neatly.1 Li’s martial arts skills are as brilliant as his acting skills aren’t.2 The action is fun and ultra-violent, the story is satisfactorily ridiculous and the acting is non-existent.3 “Good martial artist with limited acting ability” seems to represent a popular view of Chinese martial arts stars and indeed this is how they are often used in Hollywood films. Nevertheless, such a view also reveals a deep-rooted bias, i.e. the martial arts star is someone who knows less about acting than s/he does about fighting. On the other hand, it reflects a dominant idea about film performance, by privileging facial Sabrina Yu: Can a Wuxia Star Act? 134 EnterText 6.1 expression/psychology over body movement/physicality. Can’t a martial arts star act? Are fighting and acting always two split, conflicting elements within a Chinese wuxia star’s performance? In this paper, I would like to re-examine this stereotypical western critical consensus in the light of the contrasting Hong Kong critical response to Jet Li’s Chinese work Once Upon A Time In China (Tsui Hark, Hong Kong, 1991) (OUATIC hereinafter). -
Sammo Hung the 43Rd Hong Kong International Film Festival
The 43rd Hong Kong International Film Festival Filmmaker in Focus: Sammo Hung The 43rd Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) will be held from 18 March to 1 April 2019. Details of the programme lineup will be announced shortly. Legendary action master Sammo Hung is the Filmmaker in Focus this year. This is a well-deserved recognition for the all-round virtuoso who stands as a living testimony of Hong Kong cinema’s Golden Age and for his trailblazing career, having worked his way from actor, stuntman, martial arts choreographer, to director and producer for over half a century. The retrospective honouring Hung will feature 10 of his seminal works, along with a newly published commemorative book. Hung will also attend a Face to Face seminar at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre on 30 March 2019, to share his views of and experiences in the film industry with members of the public. Born in Hong Kong in 1952 to a showbiz family, Hung received specialized training in Peking Opera in his childhood at the China Drama Academy under Master Yu Jim-yuen. He later became the lead member of Yu’s performing troupe, known as “Seven Little Fortunes”. His screen career started in 1961 as a child actor in “Education of Love”. Shaw Brothers’ “The Golden Sword” (1969) saw his rise to the position of martial arts choreographer which he later combined with an acting role in renowned director King Hu’s “The Valiant Ones” (1975). His mastery won him his first Hong Kong Film Award for Best Action Choreography for kung-fu comedy “The Prodigal Son (1981)”.
