Lars Gustafsson Lars Gustafsson Filosofie Doktor (D.Phil): Theoretical Philosophy, Uppsala, 1978 Jamail Distinguished Professor Emeritus: Plan II, University of Texas at Austin My Present Interests I do not know what is most important to me: my literary work (Death of a Beekeeper, Bernard Foy, The Afternoon of a Tiler, The Silence of the World before Bach) or my philosophical work. Sometimes I cannot see any sharp boundary between these fields and I tend to regard myself as a philosopher who has turned literature into one of his tools. Why write everything as papers, essays? Plato wrote dialogues and Lucretius wrote a poem. One of my old interests is in the Theory of Meaning. My doctoral dissertation (now available as a German paperback, Sprache und Lge [Fischer # 5405]) dealt with some philosophers who have a very low thought of language. I have more confidence in it. Myself I have a very high thought of its ability to transmit not only concepts but also experience and my interest in the theory of meaning has taken me into two directions which are closely connected with my literary work: Meaning in Poetry and Meaning in the Representational Arts. The Philosophy Graduate Seminar which I give this Spring Semester of 1997 (PHL 385) is a reflection of that interest. Another such reflection is my Plan II Senior Seminar, "What is a Poem ?" From the Theory of meaning in Language I have widened my forays into a wider and still more difficult field; the meaning of images. This has resulted in some essays but also in two interdisciplinary seminars offered in the Plan II Honors Program "The Art of Seeing" and "Painting in Theory and Reality." Another field which has interested me a lot in later years is Creativity as a Philosophical concept. Presently I am preparing an International Colloquium together with The Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering (IVA) about "Art and Technology." It is one of my convictions that these fields have a common ground and that an analysis of artistic creativity has something important to tell us about technological creativity and vice versa. One result was the International Colloquium which professor John Weinstock and I arranged with support of the Excellence in Swedish Studies Endowment Spring 2000 "Swedish Inventions". `My literary work continues, at present pursuing two lines almost simultaneously, Prose and Poetry. My latest book of Poetry "En tid i Xanadu" was published spring 2002 in Stockholm. -Lars Gustafsson (ca. 2002) CURRICULUM VITAE Lars Gustafsson Education Filosofie Doktor (D.Phil): Theoretical Philosophy, Uppsala, 1978 Filosofie Licentiat, Uppsala, 1960 Uppsala University Sweden: Kings Scholarship to study with Professor Gilbert Ryle, Magdalene College, Oxford, 1957 Valedictorian, Västerås Gymnasium 1955 Academic Appointments Hayden W. Swedish Literature on the British Market 1998-2013: A Systemic Approach Agnes Broomé A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy UCL Department of Scandinavian Studies School of European Languages, Culture and Society September 2014 2 I, Agnes Broomé, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. …............................................................................... 3 4 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the role and function of contemporary Swedish fiction in English translation on the British book market in the period 1998-2013. Drawing on Bourdieu’s Field Theory, Even Zohar’s Polysystem Theory and DeLanda’s Assemblage Theory, it constructs a model capable of dynamically describing the life cycle of border-crossing books, from selection and production to marketing, sales and reception. This life cycle is driven and shaped by individual position-takings of book market actants, and by their complex interaction and continual evolution. The thesis thus develops an understanding of the book market and its actants that deliberately resists static or linear perspectives, acknowledging the centrality of complex interaction and dynamic development to the analysis of publishing histories of translated books. The theoretical component is complemented by case studies offering empirical insight into the model’s application. Each case study illuminates the theory from a different angle, creating thereby a composite picture of the complex, essentially unmappable processes that underlie the logic of the book market. The first takes as its subject the British publishing history of crime writer Liza Marklund, as well as its wider context, the Scandinavian crime boom.

On the other hand, Kajsa Lindsten Öberg demonstrates that literature, be it for adults or for children, is not entirely uninfluenced by current affairs. Mirror or not, the following two articles about recent Swedish titles identify themes connected with public debate, but also include some exposing testimonies about the most private sphere. There is a mounting international interest in Swedish literature. Swedish books are found on bestseller and “critics’ choice” charts all over the world, and the publication of translations is no longer limited to a handful of specialist publishers. Bidding for titles occurs more and more often, even for translations of previously unpublished writers. Ingrid Elam and Kajsa Lindsten Öberg have been requested to com- ment on this year’s published books for the Frankfurt Book Fair 2000. The selection of titles and the opinions are entirely their own. The com- ments are usually short but will hopefully encourage further reading. For more information about the authors, we refer you to each respective publisher. Information about funding of translations can be obtained from the Swedish Institute.

  • The "Good" Left-Wing Intellectual
Jens Ljunggren (Stockholm) über: The »Good« Left-Wing Intellectual The »Left-Wing Intellectual« in Post-War Sweden from the 1940s to the 1970s Abstract In this article I will examine the forming and positioning of »the left-wing intellectual« in Sweden from the late 1940s until the late 1970s. My main focus lies first on »the intellectual« as a social type, that is, ideal concepts of what it meant to be a »left-wing intellectual«, and second on the position of left-wing intellectuals within Swedish public debate. The Swedish intellectual setting changed rapidly during the 1960s and 1970s, when young radicals, by connecting Sweden to European culpability regarding the horrors of the early 20th century, created a new and firm left intellectual stance. Suddenly the radical left dominated Sweden’s intellectual debate, and became influential since the Swedish state and the Swedish Social Democratic Party (SAP) adopted a strategy of collaboration. The ideal of the »good left-wing intellectual«, was pictured in terms of state collaboration, reformism, sociability and being a »cultural worker« rather than a high-brow intellectual confrontation. This type could easily interact with the state while simultaneously reaching parts of the population and satisfying the media establishment – all of which strengthened the left-wing intellectuals’ public and cultural significance.

Some writers belonging to this literary scene have only one role to play, but a major one. Others reappear in several guises. I start with giving a short introduction to modern genre theory and to non fiction novels as a genre. I also discuss different definitions of non fiction novels by, for example, Rolf Yrlid and Lars-Olof Franzén. Then I discuss Enquist’s Legionärerna and the critics’ reception of it. I am also doing the same with Eriksson’s and Marklund’s Gömda before I compare these two novels with each other. My conclusion is that Legionärerna and Gömda have a lot in common although there are some differences. One important difference is that the uncertainty between fact and fiction in Legionärerna seems to be an important part of the novel, in contrast to Gömda which has a political purpose but no discussion about objectivity and the limit between fact and fiction.
