  • Zorro Rides Again
MEDIA RELEASE 20th October 2008 Zorro Rides Again Fallen Zorro salutes in Group 2 thriller Shane Whitney’s roller-coaster week finished on a high when his star stayer Fallen Zorro took out the $36,000 Group 2 Sir John Dillon Memorial at Sandown Park tonight. Just a day after Whitney was forced to scratch Chinatown Lad after the dual Group 1 winner succumbed to an infected tail, Fallen Zorro stormed down the centre of the track to defeat Gunnadoo Magic ($4.50) by the barest possible margin. Sent to the boxes a $2.80 favourite following her litter-mate’s scratching, Fallen Zorro began fairly from box three however it was Oodles Rocks ($6.70) who pushed through to take the early lead. Fallen Zorro was forced wide on the track as Gunnadoo Magic ($4.50) and Ready To Star ($8.20) railed through to attack the early leader. When Break The Ice ($22.60) made his move, it appeared as though Fallen Zorro had run her race. However coming off the back straight, Fallen Zorro found a second wind to again join Gunnadoo Magic and Ready To Star in a thrilling run to the line. Fallen Zorro goes to the line strongly and just wins the Dillon Memorial Continued on Page 2 … 2 Ready To Star appeared to have the race at her mercy until Gunnadoo Magic again pushed through on the rail and Fallen Zorro swept down the middle of the track. In one of the closest finishes to a Sandown feature race, Gunnadoo Magic’s lunge at the line was not enough – Fallen Zorro claiming the Group 2 feature by a nose.

  • Zorro Rides Again
Zorro Rides Again In 1937, New Orleans became the first city in the United States to be provided funding under the Wagner Act. Contracts for the St. Thomas and Magnolia housing projects were the first signed by FDR under Senator Robert Wagner’s legislation, and with it the Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO) was created. A young LBJ was one of the principal authors of the Housing Act of 1937, and he saw to it that the first three grants were announced in alphabetical order (with Austin being mentioned before New Orleans and New York). Hermes makes its debut, The New Orleans Item, February 5, 1937 Also that year, New Orleans saw the debut of a vibrant new carnival organization, the Knights of Hermes (which continues to charm the city with its annual parade). Hermes, HANO and housing were the talk of the town, and Hitler was the talk of the nation. For those who wanted some form of escapism, there was always the local movie house. Among numerous neighborhood theatres, there was the Bell, the Cortez, the Casino and the Carrollton (which had been rebuilt the year before). Or perhaps one visited the Imperial on Hagan Avenue (Jefferson Davis Parkway today) followed by a stop at the Parkway Bakery (also on Hagan … then as today). New Orleans-born John Carroll in 1937’s “Zorro Rides Again” 1937 produced great films like Frank Capra’s “Lost Horizon”, the Marx Brothers in “A Day at the Races”, “Stella Dallas”, “Topper” and “The Awful Truth”. In addition to these classics were the serial Westerns from Republic, and 1937’s “Zorro Rides Again” was one of these twelve-chapter runs.

  • A Guide to the Filmscripts in the Lilly Library Book Department
From Abbott and Costello in the Foreign Legion to Zorro Rides Again: A Guide to the Filmscripts in the Lilly Library Book Department There are presently over nine hundred scripts in the Lilly Li brary Book department. The movies represented range from the silent version of Ben Hur to Breaking Away. The collection's scope is broad; one can find scripts for great film classics, musicals, mys teries, adventures, shorts, westerns, comedies, and science fiction movies. Many types of filmscripts make up the collection-drafts, cutting continuities, preliminary editions, shooting finals. Gener ally the scripts are accompanied by publicity photos. Although the majority of filmscripts in the collection are for talkies, several scripts are for silent films. The text of a silent film script is devoted primarily to directions for camera shots and de scriptions of the action, and provides title captions instead of dia logue. The earliest script in the collection is for The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (released in 1921), the film that gave Rudolph Valentino his first starring role. The Big Parade (1925), King Vidor's popular film about an average man's experiences at war, estab lished John Gilbert as a top star. The Jazz Singer (1927) was the first full length feature with both singing and talking, starring AI }olson in his first movie role. Wings (1928), considered to be the last of the silent spectaculars, was the first movie to receive an Academy Award. Clara Bow and Charles Rogers starred in this tale of World War I flyers. One of the most lavish films of the silent era was the the 1926 MGM version of Ben Hur, starring Ramon Novarro, directed by William Wellman.

Biographical / Historical Republic Pictures was a small production company based in Los Angeles, California, that specialized in "B" genre films (especially Western and crime films), film serials, comedies, and other low-budget films. It was one of the "Poverty Row" studios in Hollywood churning out mass-market films from the 1920s through the 1950s, but was noted for the quality of much of its output given the limited resources available and the occasional participation of higher profile directors (Frank Borzage and John Ford among others) and actors (including Joan Crawford and John Wayne). Herbert Yates, who owned the prominent film processing laboratory, Consolidated Film Industries, founded Republic Pictures after purchasing a handful of smaller production companies. Republic was also responsible for technical innovations including a color film process in the 1930s that was cheaper to produce than Technicolor and an in-house widescreen format in the 1950s.
