Accruals No additions are expected. Arrangement Scripts arranged alphabetically. Biographical / Historical Republic Pictures was a small production company based in Los Angeles, California, that specialized in "B" genre films (especially Western and crime films), film serials, comedies, and other low-budget films. It was one of the "Poverty Row" studios in Hollywood churning out mass-market films from the 1920s through the 1950s, but was noted for the quality of much of its output given the limited resources available and the occasional participation of higher profile directors (Frank Borzage and John Ford among others) and actors (including Joan Crawford and John Wayne). Herbert Yates, who owned the prominent film processing laboratory, Consolidated Film Industries, founded Republic Pictures after purchasing a handful of smaller production companies. Republic was also responsible for technical innovations including a color film process in the 1930s that was cheaper to produce than Technicolor and an in-house widescreen format in the 1950s. By the 1950s when Republic ceased production, the company still owned distribution and television broadcast rights to its library of hundreds of films, and Republic titles were frequently rebroadcast on television even as the studio itself ceased operations. Scope and Contents 61 cutting continuity scripts for Republic Pictures films (primarily Westerns) produced between 1936 and 1959. These scripts would have been prepared after each film was finished and describe each shot in a film, generally noting the footage mark and frame number at each shot change.     The Nation's Matron: Hattie Jacques and British Post-War Popular Culture

    The Nation’s Matron: Hattie Jacques and British post-war popular culture Estella Tincknell Abstract: Hattie Jacques was a key figure in British post-war popular cinema and culture, condensing a range of contradictions around power, desire, femininity and class through her performances as a comedienne, primarily in the Carry On series of films between 1958 and 1973. Her recurrent casting as ‘Matron’ in five of the hospital-set films in the series has fixed Jacques within the British popular imagination as an archetypal figure. The contested discourses around nursing and the centrality of the NHS to British post-war politics, culture and identity, are explored here in relation to Jacques’s complex star meanings as a ‘fat woman’, ‘spinster’ and authority figure within British popular comedy broadly and the Carry On films specifically. The article argues that Jacques’s star meanings have contributed to nostalgia for a supposedly more equitable society symbolised by socialised medicine and the feminine authority of the matron. A key figure in British post-war popular cinema and culture, Hattie Jacques’s star meanings are condensed around the contradictions she articulated between power, desire, femininity and class.

    PERFORMING ARTS • FILM HISTORICAL DICTIONARY OF Historical Dictionaries of Literature and the Arts, No. 26 VARNER When early filmgoers watched The Great Train Robbery in 1903, many shrieked in terror at the very last clip, when one of the outlaws turned toward the camera and seemingly fired a gun directly at the audience. The puff of WESTERNS smoke was sudden and hand-colored, and it looked real. Today we can look back at that primitive movie and see all the elements of what would evolve HISTORICAL into the Western genre. Some cultures do not even consider it to be the year 2015! Adopt a Rescued Bird Month For many Chinese, the New Year festival is the most important of the year. One of my favorite television shows when I was a kid growing up in Cleveland, Ohio was “The Lone Ranger.” It aired on the ABC television network from 1949 to 1957, with Clayton Moore in the starring role. Jay Silverheels, a member of the Mohawk Aboriginal people in Canada, played the Lone Ranger’s Indian companion Tonto. The fictional story line maintains that a patrol of six Texas Rangers is massacred, with a sole member surviving. The “lone” survivor disguises himself with a black mask and travels with Tonto throughout the West to assist those challenged by outlaws. The Lone Ranger rides a horse named “Silver” and uses silver bullets. At the end of most episodes, after the Lone Ranger and Tonto leave, someone asks the sheriff, “Who was that masked man?” The sheriff responds that it was the Lone Ranger, who is then heard yelling “Hi-yo, Silver, away!” as he and Tonto ride away on their horses.
