The Senate’s obligation in this circumstance is clear. Under Article II of the Constitution, the president “shall appoint . judges to the Supreme Court,” and the Senate’s role is to provide “advice and consent.” Yet before the president has even made a nomination to fill the current vacancy, a number of senators have announced that they will not perform their constitutional duty. Instead, they plan to withhold advice and consent until the next president is sworn in nearly a year from now. This preemptive abdication of duty is contrary to the process the framers envisioned in Article II, and threatens to diminish the integrity of our democratic institutions and the functioning of our constitutional government. -

They’ve grappled with concepts such as compensated emancipation, the 1919 riots, school integration, and the evolution of the built environment of Washington, D.C. LABRIOLA Dear Genealogy Enthusiast, Many people involved in genealogy research in New York State believe that the earliest vital records date back to 1880. There was, however, an earlier, little known law requiring the recording of births, marriages and deaths. Because the law was not well crafted, compliance was not universal, and vital record-keeping ceased after just a few years. While many of the records of this period have long since vanished, the Town of Oyster Bay is in possession of a book that contains vital records from the years 1847 to 1849. This guide now makes the information in these records available for genealogists. While not as comprehensive as later records, these records do contain information that could be useful for anyone trying to compile a family tree. This guide lists only the names and dates of events. Because of the incomplete nature of these records, Town Historian John Hammond will provide any additional information on the records at no charge. To obtain this information, write to: John E.
