Multi-isotopic tracking (δ13C, δ15N, δ34S) of ancient trophic webs around the time of Neandertal replacement by anatomically modern humans in North-Western Europe Abstract The study investigated ecological aspects of the mammoth steppe ecosystem in NW Europe with a special focus on the role of late Neandertals and early modern humans through the analysis of stable isotopes in bone collagen (13C, 15N and 34S). Around the time of Neandertal extinction and the arrival of modern humans a diverse community of large herbivorous and carnivorous mammal lived under cold, fluctuating environmental conditions in NW Europe. The study reconstructed the ecological robustness of this ancient ecosystem and its response to oscillating climatic conditions as well as in regard of the ecological participation of Neandertals and early modern humans. The trophic web, the niche partitioning, the ecological flexibility of single species, as well as the general buffer capacity of this biocenosis are objects of investigation. The Belgium site Troisième caverne of Goyet provided a broad set of directly dated late Neandertal and very early modern human skeletal remains associated with a considerably assemblage of Pleistocene faunal remains. The occurrence of late Neandertals and early modern human skeletal remains at the same place are unique circumstance and allowed a direct comparison of several ecological aspects during a time span with a special relevance for the human evolution. The site Ziegeleigrube Coenen is contemporaneous with the occurrence of late Neandertals and reflects the ecosystem during or shortly after a cold spell. Even during such phases the structure of the mammoth steppe ecosystem was intact and provided consequently an adequate basis for late Neandertal subsidence. In an ecological context the Neandertals were part of there are no indications for any stress on the structure of the ecosystem. Through the analysis of 13C and 15N isotopic ratios in bone collagen of faunal and hominid remains the trophic web was evaluated. Processing of the isotopic data 1 through several statistical approaches allowed a detailed reconstruction of ecological niche partitioning of late Neandertals and early modern humans. Both hominid species occupied the same distinct ecological niche in terms of diet with a clear preference for mammoth and reindeer. The investigation of the 34S composition in Pleistocene bone collagen is a relatively novel approach and provided insights into spatial hominid procurement. The Goyet Neandertals do not reflect the local fauna 34S congruously their main prey had an origin different from the neighborhood of the Belgium sites (Scladina, Spy and Goyet). In contrast the 34S signal of the Spy Neandertals and the Goyet ancient modern humans corresponds to the values obtained on the local fauna. Potentially different mobility strategies among Pleistocene hominids while exploring the same prey species is the drafted scenario. The site Lommersum reflects the ecosystem at an initial phase of occupation by modern humans in the area, when Neandertals became already extinct. At this time the regional mammoth population was declining, since the horses entered their niche in distinct region of Western Europe. This study hypothesized that increasing hunting pressure on mammoth by modern humans was the main reason for this, since so far no significant environmental changes on terrestrial ecosystems could be observed in NW Europe. This study indicates that no distinct ecological change happened through the time of the last Neandertals, even during colder phases of the OIS 3. Potential ecological reasons could not be served as arguments for Neandertal extinction in NW Europe. With the capture of the area by representants of the Aurignacian the mammoth steppe ecosystem started to show evidences for stress, in this case at least partly independently of environmental fluctuations.

    GRÉGORY ABRAMS PALAEOLITHIC BONE RETOUCHERS FROM BELGIUM: A PRE LIMINARY OVERVIEW OF THE RECENT RESEARCH THROUGH HISTORIC AND RECENTLY EXCAVATED BONE COLLECTIONS Abstract Since the first half of the 19th century, Belgium has provided a multitude of sites dating back to the Palaeo- lithic. These discoveries have contributed to the definition of the Palaeolithic and to the understanding of prehistoric people. This long tradition of research has resulted in the collection of thousands of bones that are increasingly the subject of extensive analysis, including the study of bone retouchers. At present, this re- search has identified 535 retouchers in various Belgian repositories. The tools come from different sites with highly variable and incomplete contextual information depending on their excavation history (e.g., Trou du Diable and the Caves of Goyet). In contrast, unit 5 of Scladina Cave constitutes a well-defined assemblage. Bones with fresh fracture patterns provide interesting technological data, such as a refitted cave bear femo- ral shaft that includes four retouchers. The use of cave bear bones for producing tools at Scladina Cave as well as retouchers made from Neanderthal remains from the 3rd Cave of Goyet gives rise to questions about the possible symbolic meanings attributed to particular species. The fossil record shows that two types of hominins occupied the region during this period—Neandertals and Homo sapiens. Until recently, diagnostic fossil remains were found only at cave sites. Because the two populations in this region left similar material cultural remains, it was impossible to attribute any open-air site to either species. In this study, we present newly discovered fossil remains from intact archaeological layers of the open-air site ‘Ein Qashish, in northern Israel. The hominin remains represent three individuals: EQH1, a nondiagnostic skull fragment; EQH2, an upper right third molar (RM3); and EQH3, lower limb bones of a young Neandertal male. EQH2 and EQH3 constitute the first diagnostic anatomical remains of Neandertals at an open-air site in the Levant. The optically stimulated luminescence ages suggest that Neandertals repeatedly visited ‘Ein Qashish between 70 and 60 ka. The discovery of Neandertals at open-air sites during the late MP reinforces the view that Neandertals were a resilient population in the Levant shortly before Upper Palaeolithic Homo sapiens populated the region.

    Sorting the ibex from the goats in Portugal Robert G. Bednarik An article by António Martinho Baptista (2000) in the light-weight rock art magazine Adoranten1 raises a number of fascinating issues about taxonomy. The archaeological explanations so far offered for a series of rock art sites in the Douro basin of northern Portugal and adjacent parts of Spain contrast with the scientific evidence secured to date from these sites. This includes especially archaeozoological, geomorphological, sedimentary, palaeontological, dating and especially analytical data from the art itself. For instance one of the key arguments in favour of a Pleistocene age of fauna depicted along the Côa is the claim that ibex became extinct in the region with the end of the Pleistocene. This is obviously false. Not only do ibex still occur in the mountains of the Douro basin—even if their numbers have been decimated—they existed there throughout the Holocene. More relevantly, the German achaeozoologist T. W. Wyrwoll (2000) has pointed out that all the ibex-like figures in the Côa valley resemble Capra ibex lusitanica or victoriae. The Portuguese ibex, C. i. lusitanica, became extinct only in 1892, and not as Zilhão (1995) implies at the end of the Pleistocene. The Gredos ibex (C. i. victoriae) still survives in the region. The body markings depicted on one of the Côa zoomorphs, a figure from Rego da Vide, resemble those found on C. i. victoriae so closely that this typical Holocene sub-species rather than a Pleistocene sub-species (notably Capra ibex pyrenaica) is almost certainly depicted (Figure 1).

Mais, malgré l’importance de l’industrie osseuse aurignacienne dans le débat sur l’émergence et la diffusion des traditions typo-technologiques du Paléolithique supérieur, de nombreux aspects de celle-ci doivent encore être précisés. Parmi les divers éléments traitant de l’exploitation technique des matières dures animales pendant l’Aurignacien, en Europe occiden- tale, le débitage du bois de cervidé était l’un des moins documentés. Nous présentons dans ce travail une synthèse des données issues de l’analyse technologique de plusieurs séries espagnoles et d’un programme expérimental visant à caractériser les modalités d’obtention des supports en bois de cervidé à la période aurignacienne. Les résultats ont été comparés à ceux provenant de l’étude de quelques sites français et italiens.
