Children's Hospital Los Angeles Children’s Hospital Los Angeles HONOR ROLL OF DONORS For the time period of July 1, 2010, through July 31, 2011 The outpouring of support from thousands in our community and beyond has helped make this one of the most incredible years in Children’s Hospital Los Angeles’ history. With the opening of the Marion and John E. Anderson Pavilion and the completion of the Living Proof campaign, which raised more than $1 billion and made possible the establishment of The Saban Research Institute, Children’s Hospital has never been more prepared to provide world-class care to the children of our community while educating future leaders and finding cures for pediatric disease. On behalf of our patients, families, faculty, staff and Board of Trustees, we offer our deep gratitude to everyone who has helped build and sustain our institution. We are pleased to recognize individuals, organizations, corporations and foundations for their generosity during fiscal year 2011. This Honor Roll includes donors who contributed $1,000 or more in cash gifts, pledges, or pledge payments. We also are proud to recognize those who have contributed gifts of $150 to $999 in the Red Wagon Society Honor Roll of Donors, available at CHLA.org/HonorRoll. We also extend heartfelt thanks to those who, foregoing individual recognition, directed their philanthropy through one of our Associate and Affiliate or allied groups. In spite of our best efforts, errors and omissions may occur. Please inform us of any inaccuracies by contacting Michele Phillips, associate director of Donor Relations, at 323-361-1788 or [email protected]. 34 $50,000,000 AND ABOVE The Capital Group Companies Charitable Foundation Robin and Susan Richards Marion and John E. • The Cultural Life of Capital Punishment in the United States, 1945-Present
Condemned To Be Free: The Cultural Life of Capital Punishment in the United States, 1945-Present A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Daniel LaChance IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Elaine Tyler May, Advisor January 2011 © Daniel LaChance 2011 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Writing a dissertation in the humanities can be a lonely experience. I am grateful for the intellectual and emotional support that I‘ve enjoyed from family, friends, mentors, and colleagues. Colleagues in my cohort in the Department of American Studies provided stimulating first-year discussions that have influenced how I‘ve approached this topic: Adam Bahner, Alex Mendoza, Alex Urquhart, and Scott Shoemaker made me think about culture in different ways. I‘ve greatly benefited from the feedback provided on my work by members of Elaine and Lary May‘s monthly dissertation writing group. Jason Stahl and Jeff Manuel, in particular, responded generously and helpfully to my work in its earlier stages. Beyond the University of Minnesota, I‘ve benefited from colleagues in the fields of history and law and society who have provided me with invaluable advice and help. Paul Kaplan, now an Assistant Professor at California State University, San Diego, and a collaborator on a future project, was several steps ahead of me in graduate school and wrote a fantastic dissertation about the hegemony of individualism in the practice of capital punishment in the United States that supported and inspired my own thinking on the topic: his influence is widely present here.
