  • The Cultural Life of Capital Punishment in the United States, 1945-Present
Condemned To Be Free: The Cultural Life of Capital Punishment in the United States, 1945-Present A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Daniel LaChance IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Elaine Tyler May, Advisor January 2011 © Daniel LaChance 2011 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Writing a dissertation in the humanities can be a lonely experience. I am grateful for the intellectual and emotional support that I‘ve enjoyed from family, friends, mentors, and colleagues. Colleagues in my cohort in the Department of American Studies provided stimulating first-year discussions that have influenced how I‘ve approached this topic: Adam Bahner, Alex Mendoza, Alex Urquhart, and Scott Shoemaker made me think about culture in different ways. I‘ve greatly benefited from the feedback provided on my work by members of Elaine and Lary May‘s monthly dissertation writing group. Jason Stahl and Jeff Manuel, in particular, responded generously and helpfully to my work in its earlier stages. Beyond the University of Minnesota, I‘ve benefited from colleagues in the fields of history and law and society who have provided me with invaluable advice and help. Paul Kaplan, now an Assistant Professor at California State University, San Diego, and a collaborator on a future project, was several steps ahead of me in graduate school and wrote a fantastic dissertation about the hegemony of individualism in the practice of capital punishment in the United States that supported and inspired my own thinking on the topic: his influence is widely present here.

tana 1 Synopsis The ultimate love story is the tale of the ultimate man and the ultimate woman. And what are the distinguishing marks of And what about the ultimate woman? the ultimate man? She is certainly unpredictable and instinctive like Lollobrigida, Well, he is charming like Marcello Mastroianni in La dolce but she's also graceful and knows how to behave, like Audrey vita. But he's also strapping like Brad Pitt in the Fight Club. Hepburn. She's girlish, like Audrey Tautou but cool and distant He is boyish like Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic... or more like like Greta Garbo. She is funny and familiar like Julia Roberts, Alain Delon in Rocco and His Brothers, just a little bit taller, but her smile is like Ava Gardner's. She is divine, like Sophia maybe like Belmondo. He is devastating like Clark Gable and Loren, but it's not a problem if she resembles Monica sometimes a little bit melancholy, like Tony Leung Chiu Wai Bellucci... and at the same time she's ethereal like Liv Tyler in In The Mood For Love. He is decisive like Sean Connery when she's playing a fairy. She knows what she wants, like or Daniel Craig as James Bond, but unpredictable and Sharon Stone, but sometimes she's lost and innocent, like Zita eccentric like Latinovits in Szindbád. He's also a bit awkward, Szeleczky. And - I almost forgot - she kisses like Kim Novak. like Chaplin in Modern Times but enigmatic and a little scary, like Gary Oldman in Dracula. • I've Found Is Pain and Terror: Aesthetics and Moral
ALL I’VE FOUND IS PAIN AND TERROR: AESTHETICS AND MORAL STATUS IN CONTEMPORARY POPULAR NARRATIVES A Thesis Submitted to the Committee on Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in the Faculty of Arts and Science TRENT UNIVERSITY Peterborough, Ontario, Canada © Copyright by Ross Chiasson 2018 English (Public Texts) M.A. Graduate Program September 2018 ABSTRACT All I’ve Found is Pain and Terror: Aesthetics and Moral Status in Contemporary Popular Narratives Ross Chiasson This thesis is concerned with how specific aesthetic elements function in various contemporary texts to distort, obscure, or illuminate the immoral actions and behaviours being represented. This thesis applies the moral status philosophy of Mary Anne Warren, along with the moral philosophy of Emmanuel Lévinas and Zygmunt Bauman. Close reading and critical analysis are supported by Michele Aaron’s theory of spectatorship. The sublime is explored in Dexter (2006) and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (1986), the uncanny in Battlestar Galactica (2003) and Westworld (2016), and the abject in The Walking Dead (2003) and World War Z (2006). The intentions of this project are to conduct a formal examination of the relationship between audience and text as it is filtered through aesthetic representation and moral frameworks. This thesis argues that aesthetic effects must be understood in connection to morality for active consumers to engage with these texts as sites for ethical consideration. Keywords: Popular fiction, moral status philosophy, aesthetic theory, spectatorship, Dexter, The Dark Knight Returns, Battlestar Galactica, Westworld, The Walking Dead, World War Z ii Acknowledgements The biggest thanks for this project go to my supervisor, Dr.

  • 10-Year Review of Gender and EMMY Nominations
INVESTIGATION: 10-YEAR REVIEW OF GENDER & EMMY NOMINATIONS womensmediacenter.com WOMEN’S MEDIA CENTER ABOUT THE WOMEN’S MEDIA CENTER In 2005, Jane Fonda, Robin Morgan and Gloria Steinem founded the Women’s Media Center (WMC), a progressive, nonpartisan, nonpro!t organization endeavoring to raise the visibility, viability and decision-mak- ing power of women and girls in media and, thereby, ensuring that their stories get told and their voices are heard. To reach those necessary goals, we strategically use an array of intercon- nected channels and platforms to transform not only the media landscape but also a culture in which women’s and girls’ voices, stories, experiences and images are neither suf!ciently ampli!ed nor placed on par with the voices, stories, experiences and images of men and boys. Our strategic tools include monitoring the media; commissioning and conducting research; and undertaking other special initiatives to spot- light gender and racial bias in news coverage, entertainment !lm and television, social media and other key sectors. Our publications include the book “Unspinning the Spin: The Women’s Media Center Guide to Fair and Accurate Language”; The Women’s Media Center’s Media Guide to Gender Neutral Coverage of Women Candidates + Politicians”; “The Women’s Media Center Guide to Covering Reproductive Issues”; and the Women’s Media Center’s annual “The Status of Women in the U.S. Media” report. Our WMC Women Under Siege project investigates sexualized violence. Our original content channels — WMC Features, WMC FBomb, WMC Speech Project and the “Women’s Media Center Live with Robin Morgan” radio program — provide women’s perspectives on both headline stories and timely events that are ignored, not wholly captured or misrepresented in the mainstream media.
