The Queens of the Moorlands WI

Visitor Information

Dear Visitor,

We’d just like to take this opportunity to say “Hello” and welcome you to the Queens of the Moorlands Women’s Institute. Thanks for taking the time to find out more about us.

Our group was founded in 2012 – with the hope and intention of inspiring a new generation of women to join in with an almost century old tradition – by offering a more modern, informal approach to the WI – and the opportunity to learn about so things you thought you never would (!) – and meet some lovely new people. We hope that we are on the way to achieving this – but we are continually evolving and learning about the national WI, its vision, its force of nature (for it really does have some clout!) – and what we can do together.

We meet in the Community Room of the Leek Fire Station, Springfield Road, Leek, ST13 6LQ – on the second Thursday of every month. Members arrive from 7pm onwards for a 7:30pm start and meetings generally last until around 9:30pm. We have coffee/tea and cake/biscuits (and time for a chat) on arrival. The main part of the meeting involves a speaker or an activity that we can all try our hand at. We conclude with a few WI updates.

This year’s programme is attached – and as you can see, we have covered an eclectic range of topics and subjects – so there is always something for everyone. What we have found is that it’s usually the nights that you don’t really think you have an interest in that can be the most enjoyable! After all – its always good to learn new things! We involve all our members in pulling together ideas for the monthly meetings - but our committee members do all the booking and sorting out the finer details.

Every month we have a raffle – tickets cost £1, with a prize (or prizes!) donated on a rota basis by a member. All proceeds raised go into our funds to pay for the speakers and refreshments.

We also have an additional Craft group that meets elsewhere on the third Thursday of each month. Members just turn up with their knitting, crocheting – or simply for a chat and tea/wine.

The annual subscription fee for the Queens of the Moorlands WI is set at the national level – and for 2019 it is £42.00 (there are pro-rata lower fees for new members who join in quarters 2, 3 and 4). However, we think that its important that you get to know us and so we are happy for you to visit for up to three times to make a decision on whether or not you wish to join. Your first meeting is free – then for months 2 and 3 a donation of £3 per visit would be appreciated, to help us cover the cost of the speakers or any materials that we use. As part of your membership, you will also receive the national WI Life magazine 8 times per year and also access to the MyWI section of the national WI website. You also receive information on events, organized at both the national level and by the Staffordshire Federation of WI’s, that you may wish to attend.

We use email and social media to help us keep in touch with our members. We have our own Facebook page (which lists our upcoming meetings) as well as a members-only Facebook group. We are also on Instagram.

In the meantime, on behalf of us all at QMWI, we hope that you enjoy(ed) your first meeting - please ask us anything we may have missed – and we look forward to seeing you again!
