(Number 91 – Spring 2016)

President’s Message

Hopefully, this newsletter finds everyone in good health and good spirits. We welcome another wonderful spring after a mild winter.

Unfortunately, in the past few months we have lost some of our active members. On behalf of our Racine Family we offer our sincere condolences and prayers to their families. Their friendship and participation in our family events will be missed. We are grateful to have known them and they will remain a part of the memories of our Association.

A wonderful organizing committee has been busy planning a very interesting reunion for September 24-25.2016 in Cornwall, . You will find the details in this newsletter. Thanks to Denise Racine-Gratton for coordinating our 29th reunion. Denise and her committee have worked very hard to keep the costs as low as possible. We hope to see a record number of members in attendance.

Our annual Sugarbush party was again a success this year. A large number of Racine Family members and friends attended this delicious, fun, sugar-filled event! Thank you, Jean-Louis, for organizing this family event each year.

RACINADES

BY-ELECTION AT SAINTE-BRIGITTE DE LAVAL

On 18 January 2016, Marie-Ève Racine resigned as councillor for District No. 3 in the municipality of Sainte-Brigitte de Laval. She had been elected in November 2013. In the by- election of 20 March this year, three candidates ran for her post. The winner was Jean-Philippe Marthieu, who was aligned with Mayor Wanita Daniele and got 100 votes. Daniel Racine (of no relation to Marie-Ève Racine) placed third with 7 votes. Sainte-Brigitte de Laval is a city of 5,700 located about 30 kilometres northeast of Québec City.

DEATH OF MARSHALL PÉTAIN’S PRINCIPAL SECRETARY

On 24 February 2016, Jacques Racine, who was the Principal Secretary of Marshall Pétain from 1940 to 1944, died at age 101. He had been responsible for correspondence, administration and prisoners of war.

He had met Marshall Pétain when the latter used to come to dinner at his parents’ home in the 1920s. Jacques was a graduate of the Art Deco Institute (ENSAD) and the school of technical publicity (ETP). He had been left for dead on the battlefield in Belgium in June 1940. He had been captured by the Germans and released in December 1940. As a result, he received the Croix de Guerre and made a member of the Legion of Honour.

He was recruited immediately in Vichy by Bernard Ménétrel, the Marshall’s Principal Counsellor.

After Pétain’s arrest in 1944, Racine returned to Marcheille, where, thanks to his friend Pierre Balmain, he was hired in 1946 by the Balmain Company. He became director of perfumes and created the essence called “Vert, vert”.

He retired in Paris. In 2014, by then the sole survivor of the Marshall’s cabinet, he broke silence to defend the actions of the Marshall in a book entitled J’ai servi Pétain: le dernier témoin, entretiens (I served Pétain: the last witness speaks) in collaboration with Arnaud Benedetti, published by Cherche-midi in the collection called Documents.

He was the brother of Pierre Racine, a Councillor of State and Cabinet Director for Prime Minister Michel Debré (1959-1962), who was deceased at age 102 in 2011. Jacques was also an uncle to Bruno Racine, the current director general of the National Library of France.

WINNER OF JEAN-CHARLES-BONENFANT FOUNDATION PRIZE

On 14 April this year, Mr. Jules Racine St-Jacques was presented with the Jean-Charles- Bonenfant Foundation prize during the annual “Salon international du Livre de Québec” (International book exhibition of Québec). The prize was for the doctoral theses category and it was awarded by the President of Québec’s National Assembly, Mr. François Gendron. Mr. Racine won the prize for his 454 page book titled L’engagement du père Georges-Henri Lévesque dans la modernité canadienne-française, 1932-1962 – Contribution à l’histoire intellectuelle du catholicisme et de la modernité au Canada français » (Involvement of father Georges-Henri Levesque in French-Canadian modernity, 1932-1962 - Contribution to the intellectual history of Catholicism and modernity in French Canada). The book was presented to Laval University. Social changes are forcing the Church to resolve a number of contradictions in its position on

5 issues and modernity. Father Lévesque is involved in that process in French Canada. Jules Racine St-Jacques explores four episodes which were more or less conflicted in the Dominican’s career, where he attempted conciliation between economic, social, evangelical and cultural conflicts. Father Lévesque’s discoveries and recommended strategies were clearly presented and will be of value in the fields of clerical, university and politics.

We should remember that Father Lévesque (1903-2000) was the founder of the School of Social Sciences, Politics and Economics at Laval University in 1938 and he was its dean until 1955. He also founded Québec Superior Council on Cooperation and was its President from 1939 to 1944. Later, he was the President of the French-Canadian Association for the Advancement of Science (ACFAS) from 1959 to 1961. And, finally, he was the rector of the Rwanda National University from 1963 to 1971.

The prize also contained an award of $3,000. Mr. Racine St-Jacques automatically qualified to receive the prize of the French ministries of Foreign Affairs and International Relations. These latter awards allow him to participate in the International Political Book Day organized by France’s National Assembly.

FILM L’HERMINE

The film entitled L’Hermine, produced by Christian Vincent, was released in France on 18 November 2015. The film is about Michel Racine (played by Fabrice Luchini) who is a superior criminal court judge. The judge is renowned for being a strict disciplinarian and is known as “the double figure judge”. He always awards sentences of at least ten years. His world is upset when a woman he had met and loved six years previously appeared on the jury of a man charged with murder. She was perhaps the only woman he had ever loved. Her name is Ditte Lorensen- Coteret (played by Sidse Babett Knudsen). The film won many prizes, among them the César 2016 and the Mostra of Venise 2015.

LECTURE BY MARIE-NOËLLE RACINE

On 14 June 2016, mathematician Marie-Noëlle Racine gave a lecture entitled Promenade mathématique (Mathematical Promenade) at the Museum of Fine Arts and Sciences of Dijon (France).

2016 REUNION in Cornwall

Our 29th reunion this year will be held in Cornwall, in Eastern Ontario. The region was home to many Racine families.

Cornwall is located half-way between Montréal and Ottawa along the St Lawrence River. It is near the borders of Québec and New York State on Highway 401.

Cornwall was colonized in 1784 by United Empire Loyalists who were fleeing from the American Revolution. The town was a garrison and supply depot during the War of 1812.

The French began moving in to the region in about 1829. The opening of textile mills in about 1870 attracted a lot of French-Canadians. Cornwall thus became a bilingual city early on. The French Church of the Nativité was built early on and it has become a co-cathedral of the diocese of Alexandria. The city now numbers 46,000 inhabitants, of which approximately 28% are francophone.

Cornwall’s economy was dominated for a long time by the Domtar paper mill, which was a lead employer until it was closed in 2005. Cornwall’s economy has since diversified into the service industry and small manufacturers.

The construction of the St Lawrence Seaway began in 1954. As part of it, the hydroelectric dam in Cornwall became the largest of its kind in the world.

The city has an excellent sports history and it has numerous sports facilities. The Racine family contributed many athletes, including Maurice Racine (Moe the Toe), who played for the Ottawa Rough Riders. Maurice passed his athletic abilities on to his children and grandchildren, mainly in hockey.

We invite you to the 2016 reunion and we hope it will be a great success.
