My Memories of Hillcrest—1964 By Diana Louise (Usher) Simpson I'm pretty sure I was in grade 11A at Hillcrest; had Mrs. Constance Ferrigan for English so didn't have Mr. Benoit until grades 12 and 13. He was an awesome English teacher, though I had difficulty with the literature and creative part of the course. Math was even a greater struggle, though my Dad helped me a lot to get through. I'm not sure I have detailed memories but do remember when our homeroom class in grade 12 had a party for Mr. Byers when he got married. I was petrified of having to go to the blackboard to solve a geometry equation when there were a lot of strong math students in the class. Mr. Manale had a fancy car and cannot remember the name of the student who actually drove a fancy Buick(*) to school. No one else had a car to drive to school in those days but we walked when the weather was good or took the OTC. (* That student was Andrea Truck who only stayed at Hillcrest for one year.) I enjoyed phys. ed. classes until we had to do folk/square dancing so never looked forward to the springtime when I felt as though I was so awkward. One year, we had a hootenanny, but it took place in the school gymnasium. Mr. Peterson created an interest in history, though he was definitely not politically correct with one of his favourite expressions, "when men were men, and women didn't count!" Two other memories concern the political and international state of affairs in those days. I really feared there would be a nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Close friends were posted to Washington from 1961 to 1965 so we knew how terrified they were while living in Bethesda, Maryland. Then there was the assassination of President Kennedy, an event that I will never forget. We heard rumours in Mr. Benoit's English class about 12:00 noon and then received the awful news while in botany class. When I walked home from school that afternoon feeling so sad, we were so afraid the Soviet Union might somehow be involved since it was just a year after the Cuban Missile Crisis. Unfortunately, I do not have any photos of school activities. My Dad likely took photos at graduation time but we have lost some of them and my parents had trouble with sewer backups so their basement rec room filled with water, thankfully clean water, several times until the problem was solved with sewer reconstruction when so many more homes were built on Pleasant Park Road. I live in Hanover, Ontario, a small town of 8,000 in Grey County, with Owen Sound further north and Kitchener Waterloo or Guelph as favourite shopping destinations. If you're wondering how I ended up living so far from Ottawa, it's because I was assistant librarian at Merivale High School in Carleton County, with Andy Peterson as the principal. There I became good friends with Brian Simpson, Allan, my husband's brother. So some match making took place! Allan taught French and later French Immersion here in Hanover. We spent a wonderful year in Nantes, France, while he had a teacher exchange in 1977 78. We've lived here since 1974 and now I truly like living in a small town. However it was quite an adjustment after living in Ottawa, Montreal where I went to McGill for Library Science, and also Toronto for teaching qualifications.

DIANA LOUISE (USHER) SIMPSON—CLASS OF 64 With flowers from her Aunt Edna in England for her 64th birthday last November, Diana Louise Usher Simpson—Class of 64—is a retired teacher and librarian, married to Allan with two adult children, who has posted the following on the Reunion website: “Thank you for organizing this important event. I am especially looking forward to seeing former classmates after so many years. “I recently met my grade 11 and 12 math teacher, Mr. Bob Byers, was assistant librarian at Merivale High School while we and our spouses shared a meal during a Caribbean Cruise in March, 2010. “We had not seen each other for 48 years!!! It was during that conversation that we talked about the upcoming anniversary.” The "NOW" photo (at right) is of her sister, Judy Usher Brown, and herself, taken in May, 2008, at her son’s wedding. (Editor’s note: For those of you who may not remember, Diana was a member of the Senior Girls’ Volleyball Team. See page 18.)

THE 1962 GRADE 11A AND 11B GOSSIP COLUMN [Editor’s note:- We present this excerpt from Hillcrest Hi-Lites 1962—as it was printed—and will let you figure out whose initials they are. And, of course, we have a few, well-placed comments to help you out as well as some snaps from the1964 yearbook to help you figure out the initials.] It seems the spring love bug is buzzing around already. D.C. or better known as Howdy Doody isn’t content to stay in his own territory of 11B (you know that 11B had a fabulous addition of ten charming, not to mention brave young civilizers). [That’s “girls” to those of you who either can’t remember that day or can’t figure out what the editor meant.] Brainy, M.C. of 11A has a hold of his strings — but good. J.H. of 11A has caught the fancy of that pert grade niner, C.J. — we’re on your side C. Our gossip column wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t mention that smiling ham, R.J. You’d better watch him B.B. — he might lay off and look at you. [If you can’t figure out those two, then you really are getting old and losing your memory!] Tall, lanky R.G. will soon have a fan club list pages longer than “Elvis” but don’t fret H.D. you’re at the top. L.M. our surprising basketball hero has been well and truly matched with T.S. Not hard to understand at all is it? [Even I can figure out this one...but then, I have had help from L.M.] Our budding skier S.B. loves to go to Camp Fortune. Funny though, she doesn’t ski. M.A., I think must have something to do with it. W.L. hasn’t been seen with anyone around her but word has it that she’s seeing some tall, fair and handsome lad with a red berry box, J.L. [You’ll be exorcized from the yearbook and the reunion if you don’t remember who W.L. was/is.] K.M. and C.D., the reliables are still seeing B.C. and R.H.—those “furriners” from Ridgemont.

Do you remember the year that these two students were Hillcrest’s “Head Boy” and “Head Girl”? Can you name them? Here’s a clue—he works for Envirogard, located in Richmond Hill (north of Toronto), which is a company in the hardware/house wares business and lives in Brampton, near the International Airport. Here he is 10 years ago, (photo insert at left) being the MC and Auctioneer at a special retirement night for a colleague who had passed away. Every year, his professional group holds an annual golf tournament in that colleague’s honour and in the honour of other colleagues in the hardware/house wares business who have died. She was also a cheerleader, on Students’ Council, was known for her charming personality, beauty and brains. Was aiming for a career in the social sciences and was destined for marriage. Last thought to be in Topsail, Newfoundland, but where is she now?

World News in 1960 • CERN particle accelerator was inaugurated in Geneva. • France tested its first atomic bomb in the Sahara Desert. • Sergeant Elvis Presley returned home from Germany after being there two years. • Soviet missile shot down an American U2 spy plane; Gary Powers was captured. • Newly named Beatles began a 48 night residency at the Indra Club in Hamburg, West Germany. (Photo—John, George, Peter Best, Paul and Stuart Sutcliffe.) • The Summer Olympics *(the XVII Olympiad) were held in Rome; Cassius Clay won the gold medal in light heavyweight boxing. • Winter Olympics were held in Squaw Valley. Anne Heggtveit from Canada won gold in the women's slalom. Ottawa Newspapers Headlines 1960 • Last steam train to leave Ottawa station—CP 1262—on February 3, 1960 • Ontario Municipal Affairs officials threw up a major stumbling block in the plans of the Central Canada Exhibition Association to build a new 7000 seat stadium at Lansdowne Park using funds from a federal provincial works program. (Some things never change.) • Robert Campeau proposed 14 storey twin office and apartment complex on Metcalfe Street cracking the 110 foot limit on building height in downtown Ottawa. • Buses will not return to Sparks Street at the conclusion of the mall experiment on October 10—one of the first streets in Canada to be pedestrianized! • In a Labour Day weekend double header, the Ottawa Rough Riders beat the Montreal Alouettes 40 16 on Saturday in Ottawa then and lost to them on Monday, 39 22, in Montreal. • Dr. Ashford, Minister of Dominion United Church posed the question “Is Russ Jackson indispensable?” as the subject of his Sunday night sermon. • The federal and provincial governments were near an agreement on financing for a $12 million bridge 500 feet downstream from the Interprovincial Bridge. (Now known as the Portage Bridge.) • Five people killed on Melrose Avenue, the first multiple murders in Ottawa history. (This “World News in 1960” and “Headlines in Ottawa Newspapers in September 1960” was originally published by the Woodroffe High School 50th Reunion in May, 2010. Helping you to remember your old Hillcrest teachers Seeing that a few years have gone by and memories have been known to fade a little, we thought we would devote a few pages to our teachers from 1961 1962 1963. While some of us have kept our report cards (called ‘Progress Reports’ in those days, although my Grade 11 marks were certainly not ‘progressive’) and can remember who our teachers were, there may be some of us who need a little help, so we’ve put their ‘mug shots’ on the next four pages with their names. A SELECTION OF ‘FAMOUS’ BENNY QUOTES FROM 11B I remember Benoit standing in front of the class telling us he would never have a big stomach (although he already had one that could be considered a wee bit larger than norm), because he practised deep breathing exercises and holding his stomach in. (Undoubtedly following the lead of the ladies on page 18—the ones with those lovely short skirts!!!!)

You will love the prices for the events at the 20th and 25th Reunion back in July 10th, 1981 and in May 8-9- 10, 1986, with the latter event featuring “Hillcrest—The Musical” that even had a performance of a couple of songs focussing on the class of 1961-62!

Teaching us to become good public speakers
(Editor’s Note: The following is an extract from the Hillcrest Hi Lites of 1962 on the school’s “Public Speaking Club” and we’ve provided some photos to help you remember them.) The club has finished for this year, but during the short time it existed, quite a bit of interest was shown. From Mr. Benoit, the members learned much of the theory of speech giving. They were also given the chance to stand up and voice their opinions about various subjects. Impromptu and organized speeches were given and two debates were held. A Debating Team composed of Carol Harvey, Claire Martin, Hal Bolton and Bob Thiessen was formed, as it will represent Hillcrest at Ottawa U. on March 10. The topic is: Resolve: Britain’s entry into the common market is contrary to the ideals of the Commonwealth. In the Public Speaking eliminations, the Grade 9 winner was Frances Gale of 9J. The Grade 10 winner was Morley Greenberg. The grade 11 winners were Hal Bolton, Marilyn Reid and Bob Thiessen, all of 11B. Congratulations to all of you.

A HILLCREST ALUMNUS EVERYONE ‘LOVED’ As Stage Manager for the Hillcrest High School Drama Club’s first two drama productions on March 9, 1962 (See the July edition, page three.), I had two great assistant stage managers. One was Ray Jewers, whom we featured in the July edition (page five) and the other was Hillcrest’s big teddy bear—Andrew “Andy” Graham. Don Gunn, of Victoria, B.C., also knew Andy and posted this memorial message on the Hillcrest 50th Reunion website: “Andy was one of the original group of students who transferred over from Ridgemont for Grade 11 when Hillcrest opened in 61. He graduated from ‘Grade 14’ in 65. He was a real character and was involved with everything from football to drama. His real fiefdom was the auditorium where he ran the technicians club.” Andy died in May 2003 after a car accident in Toronto and we are saddened by his passing. It was great working with Andy in the Drama Club in ‘62!

Very active in sports (Pages 17 & 19.) ROY DONALD IRONS went on to become an elementary school teacher—like many other ‘64 grads— via Ottawa Teachers’ College in 1967 and then got his BA from assistant stage managers. One was Ray Jewers, whom we featured in the July Carleton in 1974. During his 25 years in teaching in the Ottawa school system, he gained credentials in primary, junior, intermediate and senior divisions as well as in physical education, geography, guidance, special education and co operative education. He’s on the reunion website where he says: “I am looking forward in seeing everyone. There will be too many wolves in the area, so I think it would be better to leave my wife at home. Make sure you have a name tag in large bold print.” (And this is the real Roy Irons—2010 at left, so don’t believe everything you see on the reunion website!)
Linda Jane Scovill writes: I have had a varied career but most of it in communications film, writing, editing, publishing...and now find myself using a lot of similar skills with mid career international students who come to Duke University to complete their Master of International Development Policy at the Sanford School of Public Policy. Both my children live close by and I have one grandson (born March 2010) and three step grandchildren. Always wondering whether or not to move back to Canada. Visit Ottawa a couple of times a year. My mum still lives on Ronald Avenue in Faircrest Heights. I have lived in London (UK), Montreal and Toronto and Durham, NC, for the past 19 years. Truly looking forward to this reunion...and to re establishing contacts from high school.
Another grad from 1964 is Thomas Paul “Tom” Schultz , who was active in the Boys Athletic Association, Junior and Senior Boys Basketball and Football and ‘other’ extra curricular activi ties. (See Page 4.) Tom played for North Central Illinois on a scholarship, then Queen’s, where he got his B.Ed. in 1971. After attending the University of Ottawa and picking up his BPHE in1970, Tom went on to play for the Ottawa Rough Riders during the 1971 74 seasons as a tight end. (ORR won the ‘ 73 Grey Cup.) He, too, pursued a career in education acquiring credentials in history, physical education, program development and implementation and program supervision and assessment. Tom is the principal at John McCrae Secondary School in Nepean. And we hope to see him at the reunion!
Known for being rather quiet, prefect Margo Dawn Robitaille , was ’destined’ to become a Gym Teacher but went into nursing school, as her 1964 ‘Impact’ yearbook entry indicated. In February, 2010, she went to a reunion of a number of her fellow graduates of the Montreal Jewish General Hospital of Nursing. Margo is married to Harvey Elman, Co Managing Partner / Co Proprietor of Landmark Properties Inc. in Westmount (Montreal), where they live close to one of their sons. Still working as a nurse on a part time basis, Margo is the proud mother of two sons and grandmother of a two year old girl. She is looking forward to the reunion and meeting her former classmates.

(Editor’s Note: While we were all attending classes back in 1962 3 and then participating in after school activities, one of our classmates—Clint Hierlihy—was practicing hard to become a rock and roll star and became a founding member of the Canadian band called, “The Esquires”, which was active from 1962 67. The following has been extracted from their website at http://www.spotlightheroes.com/Esquires/index.html and has been edited to correct errors in the original.) The Esquires were formed in 1962 and played their first show at the Rockcliffe Air Base Teen Club. After joining the Musicians Union in 1963, they became the weekend house band at the Pine land Teen Dance Pavilion. The band's sound at this time was influenced by pre British Invasion pop stars, 'Cliff Richard and the Shadows'. An early career highlight was being part of ‘ The Dick Clark Caravan of Stars’ at Faucher Stadium in Montreal with the likes of Gene Pitney, The Dovells, Paul and Paula, and The Tymes. The Esquires were contracted to perform their own material and then back a little known singer from Montreal named “Andy Kim”. Clint took over the leadership of the group at this time and was responsible for producing all of their Capitol recordings . The “classic” Esquires consisted of Clint Hierlihy, Bass; Gary Comeau, Lead Guitar; Paul Huot, Rhythm Guitar/Vocals; Richard Patterson, Drums; and, Don Norman, Lead Vocals They were first managed by Ottawa Journal columnist Sandy Gardiner who landed them a recording contract with Capitol Records (a first for any Canadian band). Prestigious performing dates soon followed with some of the '60's biggest rock and roll stars, such as ‘ The Rolling Stones’ , ‘The Beach Boys’ , ‘ Dave Clark 5’ and ‘ Roy Orbison’. Their first single for Capitol Records was " Atlantis " in 1963, followed by " The Man From Adano ", Based on the sales of these records they were invited to record their landmark album “Introducing The Esquires” Later that year, they recorded their biggest hit, “So Many Other Boys” (a Don Norman original), which won the band a RPM award (re named the Juno award the following year) for Best Vocal and Instrumental Group in 1964. The Esquires were in high demand at this time and played at Hillcrest and other Ottawa high school proms. Clint chose to leave the band in 1966 (but continued to produce their recordings) to concentrate on his education and was replaced by various musicians until the band’s demise in 1967. He did, however, keep performing on a part time basis with fellow Hillcrest graduate Peter Fallis. They were both recruited into Ottawa’s first electric blues band along with Bruce Cockburn, called, “The Heavenly Blue”. The band performed to capacity crowds at the Le Hibou coffee house. At that time, the Esquires management was taken over by Harvey Glatt, Ottawa's leading Pop Concert producer and owner of the City's number one record store chain, ‘ The Treble Clef ‘. Several more singles followed before they switched to Columbia Records where they cut two singles. (It's a Dirty Shame / Devoted to you ) ( Love hides a multitude of Sins / Why should I care ) Fame was fleeting and with a revolving door of musicians they finally disbanded in 1967. A 25th Anniversary Ottawa reunion occurred in 1987 for The Children’s Hospital fund raiser “Rock and Roll and Remember” show. In 1993, two music clips featuring the band were uncovered " The Man From Adano " and " Gee Whiz It's You " (featuring original vocalist Bob Harrington). The former is considered the first Canadian music video ever made. The clips were aired on television for the first time on CBC TV and frequently pop up on ‘ MuchMusic ’. The original footage was donated to the National Archives in Ottawa. Richard Patterson went on to join ‘ Three's A Crowd ’ with Bruce Cockburn, David Wiffen and Colleen Peterson . Don Norman formed ‘ Don Norman and The Other Four’ . Gary and Paul formed their own bands. In May of 2001, Capitol/EMI re released ‘ INTRODUCING THE ESQUIRES on CD’ . A second reunion of the classic “Esquires” took place in Kingston on the occasion of Clint’s 60 th birthday garden party in 2005.
