(Number 91 – Spring 2016) President’s Message Hopefully, this newsletter finds everyone in good health and good spirits. We welcome another wonderful spring after a mild winter. Unfortunately, in the past few months we have lost some of our active members. On behalf of our Racine Family we offer our sincere condolences and prayers to their families. Their friendship and participation in our family events will be missed. We are grateful to have known them and they will remain a part of the memories of our Association. A wonderful organizing committee has been busy planning a very interesting reunion for September 24-25.2016 in Cornwall, Ontario. You will find the details in this newsletter. Thanks to Denise Racine-Gratton for coordinating our 29th reunion. Denise and her committee have worked very hard to keep the costs as low as possible. We hope to see a record number of members in attendance. Our annual Sugarbush party was again a success this year. A large number of Racine Family members and friends attended this delicious, fun, sugar-filled event! She was the aunt of our President Céline Racine-Paquette; - MICHELINE LEGAULT, widow of Normand Racine, deceased at la Maison de soins palliatifs of Laval on 21 May 2016 at age 85; - RAYMOND RACINE, son of the late Jean-Paul Racine and Anne-Marie Gosson, deceased at Ottawa (Ontario) on 23 May 2016 at age 55; - JULIENNE RACINE, widow of Marc Laveau, daughter of the late Jules Racine and the late Eva Gingras, deceased at l’Hôpital général de Québec on 7 June 2016 at age 86; - MICHELINE BEAUREGARD, wife of Yves Racine, deceased at l’Hôpital Élisabeth-Bruyère, Ottawa, on 11 June 2016 at age70. Micheline was treasurer on the organizing committee for the reunion in Casselman in 1991 and greatly contributed to its success. Note: Our thanks to Pierre Racine for his hard work in collecting data on deaths. 4 RACINADES BY-ELECTION AT SAINTE-BRIGITTE DE LAVAL On 18 January 2016, Marie-Ève Racine resigned as councillor for District No. 3 in the municipality of Sainte-Brigitte de Laval. She had been elected in November 2013. In the by- election of 20 March this year, three candidates ran for her post. The winner was Jean-Philippe Marthieu, who was aligned with Mayor Wanita Daniele and got 100 votes. Daniel Racine (of no relation to Marie-Ève Racine) placed third with 7 votes. Sainte-Brigitte de Laval is a city of 5,700 located about 30 kilometres northeast of Québec City. DEATH OF MARSHALL PÉTAIN’S PRINCIPAL SECRETARY On 24 February 2016, Jacques Racine, who was the Principal Secretary of Marshall Pétain from 1940 to 1944, died at age 101. He had been responsible for correspondence, administration and prisoners of war. He had met Marshall Pétain when the latter used to come to dinner at his parents’ home in the 1920s. Jacques was a graduate of the Art Deco Institute (ENSAD) and the school of technical publicity (ETP). He had been left for dead on the battlefield in Belgium in June 1940. He had been captured by the Germans and released in December 1940. As a result, he received the Croix de Guerre and made a member of the Legion of Honour. He was recruited immediately in Vichy by Bernard Ménétrel, the Marshall’s Principal Counsellor.
