Our history dates back to after World War II when we started as an agricultural college with only 50 students. Today, we have more than 3,500 students, studying a range of further and higher education qualifications including animal, agriculture, equine, sports and veterinary nursing degrees. The energy and passion on campus is clear as soon as you arrive – we’re buzzing with new ideas, research and business ventures. Our students and staff are passionate about their subjects. They know each other by name and work together to change the futures of their industries. The acorn in our logo reflects much more than the stunning countryside that surrounds us; it’s symbolic of the potential within us all to grow and make a difference to the world within which we live.

“I teach my students to use their passion to challenge and improve current animal welfare practices. I design and publish research with them too, which gives them a great step into industry.

There’s increasing evidence that animals can feel positive and negative emotions, just like we can. My recent research has focused on novel approaches to sensory enrichment for captive animals, like the use of audio books to reduce stress in shelter dogs. My students and I have been working with local animal shelters and it’s great to see them changing the way they do things as a result.”

“By 2050, we're going to have another billion people on the planet and they're all going to need to eat. We've really got to think about the future of farming. A lot of farming is still done a certain way just because that's the way it's always been done. At Hartpury I discovered new ways of doing things and the importance of those ways. I took a lot of what I learnt back to my home farm, particularly on the science- side, looking at things like nutrition. "I love to see that ‘light bulb’ moment, when my students suddenly feel that connection with their horse and understand what they are aiming for.

Riding a horse and getting him going well, being at one with him is very special. I’ve ridden many horses, some good and some not so good - it’s enabled me to understand every kind of horse-rider partnership. The horse is a unique animal. I first found out about Hartpury when I was working for event rider Helen Ball. She had a McTimoney practicioner working on her horses and I just loved seeing the benefits he made to them.
