Kind Regards Volunteer Engagement Update Issue 2 | Feb 2013 Volunteer Recogniton President’s XV Awards Thank you for promoting this year’s awards. We received over 170 nominations. The judging panel meet on Tuesday 5 March to select the 15 winners and 30 runners up. Once they have been chosen and checks completed, the winners will be notified and we will publicise the results. Winners trophies will be presented by one of the panel and we will ask RFU Council Members to present runners up trophies at local events. CB Volunteer Recognition Events Several CBs are planning events to recognise club and CB volunteers. To access Exceptional Volunteer Recognition Gifts please use the ‘multiple nomination form’ attached and allow good time for the items to reach you. We need a quality nomination for each volunteer before items are dispatched. Nominations should include what the volunteer has done and the difference their efforts have made to rugby. The ‘guide to making good nominations’ is attached. The following gifts are available while stocks last! A select few volunteers experienced an exclusive opportunity to see the England team train at West Park Leeds and Penny Hill Park. 50 tickets were given to valued volunteers by local delivery teams for each of the following matches: England Saxons v Scotland A at Newcastle RFC; England U20's v Scotland U20's at Plymouth Albion RFC; England U20's v France U20's at Sixways, Worcester; England U20's v Italy U20's at Northampton, Franklins Gardens. The England Rose is an official registered trade mark of the Rugby Football Union Training Volunteer Coordination We want to ensure rugby always has an enthusiastic, well-trained and effective volunteer workforce. Short workshops have been created to share the knowledge and skills needed to recruit and keep volunteers so everyone enjoys their experience in rugby. Topics include: Introduction to volunteer coordination; The role of the Club Volunteer Coordinator; Volunteer Recruitment; Volunteer retention; Dealing with difficult volunteers; Volunteer recognition; Volunteer workforce planning; Engaging volunteers in clubs at risk. Rugby Development Officers have received ‘product orientation’ to enable them to deliver sessions that meet the needs of local clubs. Rugby World Cup Lead Up & Legacy It would be fantastic if all rugby clubs in England are the best hosts when the third biggest sporting event is held here! Staffordshire Rugby Union have designed a short, interactive session to help clubs be more welcoming.     Written evidence submitted by the Rugby Football Union SPORT IN OUR COMMUNITIES – RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION RESPONSE TO DCMS SELECT COMMITTEE INQUIRY ORGANISATIONAL SUMMARY The Rugby Football Union (RFU) is the governing body for Rugby Union in England. Across England there are four million people enjoying rugby, 500,000 regular players with more than 100,000 volunteers in almost 2,000 clubs. All profit made by the RFU is invested back into the community game and the men’s and women’s England age grade and senior teams. This written submission details the governance of Rugby Union in England and how the future of the community game can be secured. 1. ARE CURRENT SPORTS GOVERNANCE MODELS FIT FOR PURPOSE? The RFU has a co-operative structure. Rather than being a company, it is a society registered under the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act, meaning that it is a members’ organisation. The membership is predominantly rugby clubs, both professional and amateur. The Board has ultimate responsibility for the strategic direction of the RFU, and has the authority to exercise all executive functions other than clearly specified powers which are reserved to Council or the members. The Board is designed to be a combination of representatives of the game elected from the RFU Council, together with executive staff and independent non-executive directors. Directors are appointed through a rigorous skills based selection process to ensure the right combination of skills, experience and knowledge. With the exception of executive staff, all Board members are subject to limits on the time they can serve on the Board as set out in the RFU’s Rules.

    Edmund Harris, Twickenham Rugby Ground 1906-1910: A Grand Gesture (September, 2002) Introduction In his book, The Football Grounds of Great Britain, Simon Inglis makes a telling observation in that although “the architecture books are full of studies of the dullest church, even Pevsner’s Guide To The Buildings of England, mentions only two football grounds; Wembley and Hillsborough, and even then only in passing.”1 Within this scenario, the Rugby Football Union ground at Twickenham rests comfortably. As the single most dominant architectural feature on the Twickenham landscape it has largely escaped serious historical attention. What has become accepted as the definitive history of Twickenham Rugby ground has mostly been passed down from O.L.Owen who wrote the History of the Rugby Football Union in the 1950s.2 Nothing since has been produced which has tested or rigorously questioned Owen’s legacy. Wallace Reyburn did write Twickenham – The Story of a Rugby Ground in the 1970s, but mostly what historical information it contains echoes Owen’s earlier account.3 The legend has it that it was fine, all-round sportsman and rugby referee Billy Williams who found the Twickenham site after a year of scouting around for a suitable home and headquarters for the England rugby game and the Rugby Football Union. Because of the inferior nature of the site, it was almost immediately dubbed ‘Billy Williams’ Cabbage Patch’. Whereas the overall scheme was later praised as an example of “hard bargaining and honest accounting at their best,”4 there is evidence to suggest otherwise. Starting with The Roots of Twickenham Rugby Ground, this paper sets out to firstly examine Owen’s partial perspective within the context of the Rugby Football Union and the England game before 1907.

Those present bowed their head for quiet reflection in memory of people associated with Kent County RFU and its Clubs who had passed away during the past year. Minutes of the last AGM held on 26th June 2019 The minutes of the meeting held on the 26th of June 2019, which were previously circulated, were confirmed as a true record and no matters were arising. Address of Kent County RFU President, John Nunn I will start my address by referring back to last year’s AGM at Sheppey RFC where I stated that I had enjoyed the first year of my three-year tenure, as Kent County RFU President and was looking forward to a very busy second year. It started in that vein with the most enjoyable visit to Twickenham on 11th August for the first of the pre-world cup international warm-up matches against Wales.
