THOMAS The Kansas City Star - July 12, 2002 They are the forgotten victims of clergy sex abuse, neglected by the media and overlooked by church activists. Yet many experts estimate that females -- both girls and women -- constitute a sizable number of all victims of sexual abuse by priests. The public focus of the sex abuse scandal in the Roman Catholic Church has been on predatory homosexual behavior by rogue priests, and the subsequent cover-up by some bishops. As a result, female victims say they feel frustrated and isolated as they attempt to deal with the emotional aftermath of sex abuse. And, others say, dealing with those victims presents a unique set of problems for the church -- and for those looking to blame the crisis on gay priests. "They were totally unwilling to really acknowledge that what happened to me was really terrible," said Corinne Corley, a Kansas City attorney who said she was sexually abused by a priest in the Archdiocese of St. Louis when she was a teen-ager in the 1970s. "Because of the heterosexual factor, they're going to assume that you were Lolita, a temptress." "The double standard is terrible," agreed Gary Schoener, a clinical psychologist in Minneapolis who has handled hundreds of clergy abuse cases. "It is presumed that the abuse of young boys is more deviant and therefore more harmful." Financial settlements involving female victims tend to be smaller than settlements for male victims, Schoener said. -

Introduction
INTRODUCTION In August 2002 Mr George Birmingham SC presented a preliminary report on child sexual abuse involving Roman Catholic priests in the Diocese of Ferns to the Minister for Health and Children. Mr Birmingham had been asked by the Minister to investigate the background to allegations of child sexual abuse in the Diocese with a view to recommending an appropriate form and Terms of Reference for an Inquiry to inquire into the issue. As recommended by Mr Birmingham, the Minister for Health and Children established a non-statutory private inquiry to investigate allegations or complaints of child sexual abuse which were made against clergy operating under the aegis of the Diocese of Ferns. The Ferns Inquiry was established as a three-person team under the chairmanship of Mr Justice Francis D Murphy, formerly of the Supreme Court. The two other members of the Inquiry are: Dr Helen Buckley, senior lecturer in the Department of Social Studies, Trinity College, Dublin; and Dr Laraine Joyce, deputy director of the Office for Health Management. The Inquiry was formally established by the Minister for Health and Children on 28 March 2003. Counsel to the Inquiry was Mr Sean Ryan SC and Mr Declan Doyle SC. Mr Ryan was nominated as a Judge of the High Court in September 2003 and was succeeded by Mr Finbarr Fox SC. The Secretrary to the Inquiry was Mrs Marian Shanley BCL Solicitor. Solicitor to the Inquiry was Mr Joseph O’Malley BCL LLM Solicitor, of Hayes Solicitors, Lavery House, Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2. How the Catholic Church Sexual Abuse Crisis Changed Private Law
CARDINAL SINS: HOW THE CATHOLIC CHURCH SEXUAL ABUSE CRISIS CHANGED PRIVATE LAW MAYO MORAN* ABSTRACT For several decades now, the unfolding of the Catholic Church sexual abuse crisis has been front-page news. It has wreaked havoc on hundreds of thousands of lives, cost the Church billions of dollars, and done irreparable harm to a once-revered institution. Along the way, it has also helped to transform the all- important private law of responsibility. When the crisis began to break in the early 1980s, the few survivors who sought legal redress faced a daunting array of obstacles. Limitations periods alone had the effect of barring almost all child sexual abuse claims. Immunities also helped to shield the Church. Private law itself was generally hostile to institutional liability, particularly where the harm resulted from the criminal act of an individual. All of that has changed. Among the catalysts for change within private law, the Catholic Church sex abuse crisis looms large. The scale of the crisis and the universal nature of the Church were certainly both important factors, but so too was the Church's response. From the initial impulse to cover up instances of abuse to choices made in the legal and political arenas, it appeared willing to do almost anything to protect itself. Yet the Church had traditionally bene®ted from special treatment precisely on the ground that it was not an ordinary, self-interested legal actor. The tension between the Church's mission and its approach to covering up abuse began to attract notice. Courts and legislators were prompted to act. -

INTRODUCTION In 1998, John Geoghan, a Massachusetts priest, was defrocked— stripped of any rights to perform as an ordained priest—for molesting children.1 Four years later, the Archbishop of Boston, Bernard Law, arguably one of the most influential people in the state, resigned from his position upon revelations that he knew of Geoghan’s actions and yet chose to send him to other parishes where he would still be in an environment with minors.2 In other parishes around and outside the United States, similar scenarios were, and had been, occurring for years: priests using their positions in order to engage in sexual acts with minors.3 When survivors began to speak up, they and their families were often offered “hush money” in order to prevent a scandal.4 Although the sexual abuse crisis came to the forefront in 2002 due to the investigative journalist team at the Boston Globe, reports of the sexual abuse of children by members of the clergy had been * Adjunct Professor, University of Denver Sturm School of Law. From the Executive Director's Desk Several decades ago, I served as Executive Director of a domestic violence prevention agency and shelter offering women services intended to support them as they worked to end the abuse they suffered in their relationships. Women came into the shelter with one, two, three, or more children in tow. Women came into the shelter with bruises, both physical and emotional. Women came into the shelter crippled by a deep sense of shame. They had internalized messages from their abuser, family, friends, pastors, and society and they blamed themselves for their abuse and neglect. When they entered the doorway of the shelter, they became part of our lives and we became a part of theirs, if only for a short while. We sought to support them, shield them, defend them, offer them choices that would empower them, but most of all, we sought to honor them by letting them know in practical ways how deeply they were cherished, respected, and admired. In turn, their courage inspired us and taught us what it means to live and love with purpose in the midst of a war zone. Today, many women are braving the patronizing, demeaning, and destructive taunts of others as they declare their resistance to abuses they have experienced at the hands of too many men in power. -

2016 Thematic: Responsibility and Redress 779 14 RESPONSIBILITY AND REDRESS: THEORISING GENDER JUSTICE IN THE CONTEXT OF CATHOLIC CLERICAL CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN IRELAND AND AUSTRALIA KATE GLEESON* I INTRODUCTION Justice for survivors of institutional child sexual abuse is a defining theme of this age. Inspired by remedies associated with transitional justice and human rights abuses, various governments have sought to investigate and make amends for institutional child abuse perpetrated in the context of welfare and services provided on behalf of states, often by autonomous organisations such as Christian churches. The investigatory-commission model of justice predicated on individual ‘truth recovery’ and restorative outcomes for survivors has predominated since the Republic of Ireland’s Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse (‘Ryan Commission’) commenced in 1999.1 Internationally, outcomes for complainants have varied, with all investigatory bodies and redress schemes facing limitations regarding the forms and functions of justice that may be delivered at the meta level of state apparatus.2 In some countries, much more than others, civil justice has been delivered as the outcome of mass and individual lawsuits brought against religious organisations and individuals with a duty of care to protect children.3 In general, the international institutional child abuse scandal of the past 30 years presents a conundrum concerning the ways in which sexual harms are understood. Post-Catholic Ireland in Literature and Popular Culture
P O S T - C A T H O L I C I R E L A N D I N L I T E R A T U R E A N D POPULAR CULTURE Lisa McGonigle A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand April 2013 ABSTRACT This thesis proposes the concept of turn-of-the-millennium Irish culture as “post-Catholic”. It outlines how the Catholic Church had occupied so powerful a position in the post- independent Irish State, but recent decades have seen such profound changes in the moral and political authority ceded to the Church. This thesis therefore argues that the dissolution of the Church’s hegemony constitutes a paradigm sociopolitical and cultural shift, which it defines as the move from a Catholic to post-Catholic society. It also argues that this shift has been both reflected in and effected by literature and popular culture, focusing in particular on issues of gender and sexuality in selected cultural texts. Chapter One examines how Marian Keyes uses the chick-lit novel to write back against conservative Catholicism and the maternalisation of Irish women, supplanting the “Irish Catholic Mammy” with a younger, sexually active generation of Irish women who do not define their subjectivity in terms of their maternal duties. It argues that Keyes’ hostility towards the Catholic Church affects, indeed directs, the sexual politics and frankness of her work and her treatment of topics such as abortion and divorce. Chapter Two investigates how popular novelist Maeve Binchy explores female sexuality and desire in opposition to a traditional Catholic discourse of sin and virtue. -

She decided to find other survivors in the hope that they would help each other to cope with the effects of the abuse as well as to work together to keep others safe.
