The Making of a Connection – The Potential of a Mammoth Cave System-Whigpistle Cave Connection 1 1 2 Patricia Kambesis , Joel Despain , Chris Groves 1 Cave Research Foundation 2 Hoff man Environmental Research Institute, Western Kentucky University Abstract The current length of the Flint Ridge-Mammoth Cave System (to be called Mammoth Cave System for the rest of this paper) has been attained by a series of connections instigated by cave explorers/mappers of the Cave Research Foundation (CRF) and Central Kentucky Karst Coalition (CKKC). Between 1961 and 2011, connections have expanded the surveyed extent of the cave system to its current “offi cial” length of 390 miles (650 km). -

E-mail: [email protected], [email protected] Resumen Entre los terrenos kársticos superficiales y subterráneos, las cuevas son, actualmente para determinados colectivos, el producto más interesante del karst y, que de forma creciente, ha atraído la curiosidad humana desde que los seres humanos habitan el Planeta. Prueba de ello son los restos de arte rupestre y yacimientos paleontológicos descritos en muchas cuevas o el creciente número de visitantes anuales que tienen. Sin embargo, en las últimas décadas los equipos de científicos y espeleólogos se han ocupado especialmente del karst en términos de cifras, con especial énfasis en grandes cavidades. Bien, atendiendo al tamaño de las mismas en su desarrollo horizontal o vertical, o de forma parcial, midiendo volúmenes de galerías y conductos, cámaras o espeleotemas, entre otros elementos. Existen exhaustivos rankings de los sistemas de cavidades de mayor longitud total de galerías exploradas, de las salas más grandes, de las cuevas más profundadas o de los espeleotemas más grandes en su tipo. Esto ha condicionando que, por un lado, exista un auge en la investigación de los sistemas endokársticos más grandes del mundo, y por otro, que paisajes superficiales kársticos espectaculares del Planeta hayan pasado a un segundo orden en cuanto a el interés científico o turístico. -

Tulum in Mexico Tulum is a seaside town in Mexico known for ancient Mayan sites and cenotes in Riviera Maya. The town, still staying true to its origins, has emerged from being an off-the-beaten-path pit stop for backpackers to new-wave tourism destination. Practice snorkeling in the azure waters, take a canal trip through the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve in the afternoon, and book yourself a refreshing Temazcal session: to stay or to leave, therein lies the conundrum. Come here to bathe in its rustic elegance and go back revitalized with lots of memories. History This Mayan site was known as 'Zama', which means “place of the dawning sun.” A former trading post of the Mayan Civilization, it was among the last cities inhabited by the Mayans and flourished between the 13th and the 15th centuries. In 1518, a Spanish explorer Juan de Grijalva was the first European to arrive here. The word 'Tulum' means wall or fence in Mayan language. Things to Do in Tulum Tulum Ruins – More than 60 Mayan ruins and temples, perched on 12-meter-high cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea, are the numero uno reason to visit this region. A 784-m-long wall, made of limestone, encloses the tallest building of El Castillo or the castle. The Temple of the Frescoes features statues, carvings, and colorful frescoes. Other significant temples are: Temple of the Initial Series and the Temple of the Descending God. -

[email protected] ABSTRACT The Sac Actun system, located in northeast Quintana Roo, Mexico, is among the most extensive underwa- ter cave systems located along the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. The cave is composed of li- near phreatic conduits that have two forms. The coastal sections of the Sac Actun system are characterized by low horizontal tunnels that form mazes paralleling the coast and rudimentary conduits broken by frac- ture-controlled rooms. Inland passages are fault/fracture controlled, have a linear, anastomotic configura- tion, and align perpendicular to the coast. Access to the cave system is gained through cenotes which are the portals into the Yucatan underwater cave systems. The occurrence of drowned speleothems in many parts of the cave system, and sections of air-filled upper level passages are indicative of major fluctuations in sea level. The Sac Actun system is part of one of the most extensive and significant eogenetic karst aqui- fers in the world. The development of the Sac Actun system, as well as the many other caves systems along the Yucatan Caribbean Coast is controlled by the coastal hydrologic regime, driven by glacio-eustatics, and influenced by stratigraphic and structural controls. -

Rohrer ii ABSTRACT Most settlement pattern research and GIS analysis of the ancient Maya of the Northern Yucatan have focused on water availability in a dry landscape where cenotes are often the only water source. While water is of paramount importance, permanent settlement secondarily requires farmable soil, a resource often as precious as water in many parts of the Yucatan. -

Dirección de Medios de Comunicación Boletín N° 52 19 de febrero de 2018 Promoverán al sistema Sac Actun, ubicado en Tulum, México, como Bien Mixto ante la UNESCO *** Este sistema se extiende a lo largo de 347 km., pero que podría ser un “monstruo” de hasta mil kilómetros que en sus entrañas aloja restos humanos y faunísticos de distintas épocas *** A lo largo del mismo se localizan cerca de 200 sitios arqueológicos que incluyen un par de contextos de hombres tempranos, de megafauna, y casi 140 asociados a la cultura maya Una fina hebra flotando en la oscuridad fue la pista que ahora permite afirmar que Sac Actun, un sistema de cavernas inundadas que corre bajo el suelo de Quintana Roo, México, es el más grande de nuestro planeta. Un conjunto de cavidades interconectadas que suma 347 kilómetros, pero que de comprobarse su conexión con otros sistemas aledaños, podría ser un “monstruo” de hasta mil kilómetros que en sus entrañas aloja restos humanos y faunísticos de distintas épocas. El arqueólogo Guillermo de Anda Alanís, director del Proyecto Gran Acuífero Maya (GAM), iniciativa de investigación multidisciplinaria que coordina el Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) en colaboración con la National Geographic Society, sólo puede hablar en superlativos al referirse a Sac Actun, que como el pez grande que se come al chico, ha absorbido al sistema Dos Ojos para alcanzar una extensión que es equivalente a la distancia entre las ciudades de Cancún y Chetumal. En conferencia de prensa realizada en el Museo Nacional de Antropología, el doctor Roberto Junco, subdirector de Arqueología Subacuática del INAH, dio a conocer que se buscará promover la declaratoria del sistema Sac Actun como Bien Mixto, ante la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura (UNESCO); es decir que posee un componente natural pero también cultural de valor universal. -
