My vision In 2014, the degraded state of the planters and green spaces along Bank Street I envision an Old Ottawa South and Capital Ward driven by smart became an election issue. When renewal work was done a decade earlier, no budget and sustainable development, where residents have a greater say in had been approved for ongoing maintenance. I pledged to find a solution. the decisions that shape their communities. I want to see a dynamic Re-elected (thank you!), I helped bring together some interested people, Ward that fosters and supports local businesses and welcomes families connecting them with city staff and bringing some modest but essential resources with affordable housing, excellent municipal services and modern City to where it was needed. To this seedling, I helped bring compost — literally as well facilities. as metaphorically. The result is the vibrant, attractive spaces you see today, where there was once weeds and litter. Top 3 priorities for Old Ottawa South By no means did I do this alone. Nor was I even a significant worker. Rather, 1. Planning and actualizing the redevelopment of Brewer Park and I was a facilitator, networker, cheerleader and occasionally cajoler. It was the ensuring the construction of a new field house for Windsor Park residents and businesses — knowing they had support — that stepped up. This is, 2. ARTS AND CULTURE Book Launches by Local Authors to launch their most recent books of poetry. The event offers Old Ottawa South residents an opportunity to meet and hear two talented writers who live in our neighbourhood. The launch will be held at The Cameron, located inside the Ottawa Lawn Bowling and Tennis Club, at 176 Cameron Avenue, on Sunday, September 30. The bar will be open, and the Thursday Night Jazz Band and Montreal’s Eva (Young’s daughter) will play music during the evening. The fun starts at 7:00 pm, with readings at 7:30. Jenny Haysom is launching her first book, Dividing the Wayside from Palimpsest Press. Haysom’s writing has appeared in a variety of publications, most recently The Walrus, The New Quarterly and The Fiddlehead. Her first chapbook of poetry was published by Anstruther Press in 2017. Kingston poet Steven Heighton speaks of her “maturely attuned ear” and describes this as a “seasoned and exceptional debut”. Deanna Young is launching her fourth book, Reunion from Brick Books.
