Louisa point rail lines were laid between Neral and Matheran in 1907 by Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy. To this date, many old British era buildings are well preserved and this coupled with the presence of unmetalled muddy roads made of red laterite earth and ponies transporting people and goods, gives an image of a quiet town two centuries back.

A very good way to reach Matheran is to take a toy train from Neral in the base of the hill. The trip is very enjoyable. For people taking their own vehicles, Dasturi Naka is the last motor-able point and cars have to be parked at the parking here. Matheran centre is still 2.5 kms from this point. From here one can walk, pony- ride or take a hand-pulled rickshaw up to Matheran centre. Porters are also available to carry luggage. The more energetic generally follow the toy train line and trek up to the town centre.

What to see:

Despite its tiny size, there are plenty of things to see and do in Matheran. It has a true old-world charm, unpolluted and tranquil with much greenery and wildlife around. One can easily explore all the places
