CoSIDA Digest - 3 C o S I D A CoSIDA Membership Approves Executive Director Proposal; Search Process Begins

CoSIDA membership approved an amendment to its constitution to add an executive director to its leadership at its annual business meeting on July 3 in San Diego. The amendment passed with a near-unanimous vote of all present at the meeting. The search process has begun with a nine-member search committee put in place by the CoSIDA Board in San Diego. The search committee con- sists of past presidents Langston Rogers (Ole Miss), Pete Moore (Syracuse) and Ed Carpenter (Boston Univ.); CoSIDA treasurer Dave Wohlhueter (Cor- nell); university division members Carol Hudson (Old Dominion), Judy Will- son (Louisiana-Monroe) and Justin Doherty (Wisconsin); college division members Eric McDowell (Union) and Blake Timm (Pacific). The goal for the search process is to have an executive director in place by March 1, 2008. Along with being the administrator for CoSIDA, the executive direc- tor would be charged with creating a long-term strategic plan for CoSIDA as well as representing the organization at other national conventions, including NACDA and NCAA, as well as both games, national championship games and other events. The position would also work at developing relationships with potential corporate sponsors, peer leaders of other athletics organiza- tions and other important contacts. The executive director would report to the CoSIDA Board of Directors.

CoSIDA Digest - 37 SHELLY POE Honored by WVU Staff and Has Scholarship Named in Her Honor Monday, July 16, 2007

by Mickey Furfari for The Register-Herald

West Virginia University coaches and co-workers from throughout the athletic department paid tribute to Shelly Poe at a farewell reception Monday afternoon in the Coliseum. She is leaving after 26 years of distinguished, dedi- cated service, the last 19 as sports information director, to become director of athletics communications at . Monday was her last day on the job. It was an at-times tearful departure for Poe, but she won’t be forgotten at her alma mater. Allan Babcock of Fairmont donated $25,000 to the Mountaineer Athletic Club for a scholarship in her name. It is to assist students who would like to major in sports communications. “This is so wonderful,” Poe told him. “It is an unbe- lievable gift.” She also has received numerous cards and an assort- ment of other gifts. But that one highlighted her going- away fete. Babcock, who has served as official scorekeeper at WVU men’s home basketball games for 63 years, already had contributed funds for two similar scholarships pre- viously. The office complex in which the SID unit’s in- terns work has been named for Babcock. He also has served many years as press box stew- ard for home football games. And he donates his modest fees back to the university. Babcock said, “I’ve been around so long and, while not a part of the sports information staff, it has been my privilege to serve 10 different SIDs in my time. And of all the ones I’ve worked with, I think Shelly is head and shoulders above everybody else. “And the information she has gathered and the crew that she had here have done an excellent job in promot- ing university athletics. I just thanked her so much for giving me the opportunity to serve WVU.” Babcock asked that the scholarship money and interest earned be used to enhance the importance of sports communications. “I’d like them to offer grants to deserving students that might some day become rising stars themselves,” he said. “Shelly Poe has done an excellent job, and she’s the longest tenured SID we’ve ever had. It’s just great what she and her staff have done for WVU sports.” He also presented her with a personal plaque com- memorating her lengthy service.

Family and friends say it was Edmondson’s role as a promoter of youth athletics and his time on the sidelines as a Little League and hockey coach that he treasured most. He made a career out of keeping student ath- letes on track to success.

‘’Maybe he wasn’t the guy making the bas- ket or the guy hitting the ball, but I think he felt like he was part of the team,’’ said his brother, Chris Edmondson.

Born in South Orange, N.J., Edmondson grew up across the street from a recreation center, where he played basketball and baseball and supervised younger kids in the winters.

In 1980, he graduated from Kean College with a degree in recreation administration. There, he played with and coached the school’s hockey club.

He moved to South Florida and received a master’s degree from St. Thomas University in sports administration in 1984. A year later, he was hired by the university as its director of student activities. Edmondson was also director of student life and of alumni affairs and taught public rela- tions and speech.

Friends say he built a rapport with his stu- dents and was always willing to hear them out.

‘’George was one of those people who made a profound impact on everyone he met,’’ said Andy Elisburg, the senior vice presi- dent of basketball operations for the Miami Heat, who met Edmondson while studying at St. Thomas.

In 1998, Edmondson became the sports in- formation director for Miami Dade College. He handled public relations for the school’s sports department and mentored student athletes whose grades were slipping.

For about the last 15 years, Edmondson also worked for NBA Entertainment, marking the best plays of Heat players on video foot- age of the games.
