2006-07 Outlook

After posting a 25-9 record a year ago and claiming the 2006 Big Ten Conference Tournament title, Iowa basketball in 2006-07 will feature two returning starters and a highly regarded recruiting class as the Hawkeyes seek their seventh straight winning season and post-season invitation.

Iowa won 25 games last season, the second most in school history. Coach Steve Alford, now in his eighth season, is the only Hawkeye basketball coach to lead his team to six straight winning seasons. Alford has guided Iowa to two Big Ten tournament titles (2001 and 2006). The Hawkeyes tied for second (11-5) during the regular season last year, missing a title share by just one game.

Iowa’s six straight winning seasons mark the second longest consecutive win streak in school history, just one behind the seven year stretch from 1950-56. Alford’s teams have won 20 or more games in three of seven seasons. Alford has guided the Hawkeyes to three NCAA Tournament bids and six post-season appearances. His 291 career wins leads all current NCAA Division I coaches who are 41 years old or younger.

The Hawkeyes last season relied on the senior quartet of guard Jeff Horner, forward Greg Brunner, center Erek Hansen and sixth man Doug Thomas. With those four graduating, the leadership will be passed on to guards Adam Haluska and Mike Henderson, two seniors who also played key roles in Iowa’s success over the past two seasons. 2006-07 Outlook

“We realize we’ve had no issues at point guard for four years, due in large part to Jeff’s ability to control the basketball and run the team,” admits Alford. “Adam has really had two good years playing alongside those four seniors. His job on the floor won’t change, but his leadership role will. He’ll need to step up and be the leader we think he can be.”

Henderson (6-2, 190), who also started all 34 games a year ago, averaged 7.6 points and 3.9 rebounds per outing, along with ranking second on the team in steals and third in assists. Henderson made big strides in many phases of his game, proving to be a good defensive player who is at his best when attacking the basket. His three-point percentage (46.4%) was best on the team.

Henderson scored in double figures in 11 games, including a season-best 17 points in a come-from-behind win at Purdue. He also had 15 points in an early season win over Kentucky and added 11 points to contribute to Iowa’s win over Michigan State in the semi-finals of the Big Ten Tournament.

Sophomore Tony Freeman (6-1, 185) was able to learn under Horner a year ago, playing in 33 games and starting four times when Horner was out with a knee injury. Freeman averaged 3.4 points and just under two assists per game in his limited roll. He scored a season-best 10 points in a win over Michigan.

“I think Mike is ready to assume added responsibility, but he has to continue his progress,” said Alford. “Tony had a nice freshman year, now his role changes with added opportunity. Senior guard Mike Henderson averaged 7.6 points and The continued improvement of all three is critical.” led the Hawkeyes in three-point field goal percentage (.464) last season. The other returning letterman is junior center Seth Gorney, who will have the task of filling the shoes of Hansen and Haluska (6-5, 210) earned academic all-Big Ten recognition Thomas in the middle. Junior center/forward Kurt Looby will and was an academic all-American a year ago. He has started every game in his career, is a solid defender and “The frontcourt is interesting, in that we have three guys improved his rebounding last season. who don’t have much experience,” noted Alford. “Kurt and Seth know our system and know what is expected, but Seth As a junior Haluska shot 84.8% from the free throw line has not had a lot of game action the past two seasons and and had the best rebounding season of his career. He scored Kurt redshirted after two years in junior college.” in double figures in 27 games and had 20 or more points in four games. Haluska had a career-best 29 points in a win at Penn State. He added 20 and 18 points, respectively, in back- to-back home wins over Indiana and Ohio State, earning Big Ten Player of the Week honors. IOWA BASKETBALL
